Model identification:
"Quick analysis suggests that this model was either made to a scale of 1/12 (used most often by NGH) or 1/16. Smaller scales (i.e. 1/24 or 1/32 and representing larger vessels in reality) are unlikely as they would result in dimensions quite untypical for Herreshoff-built vessels.
At a scale of of 1/12 this model would represent a vessel of 28' 4" LOA, between 18' 5" and 19' 2" LWL (there are two scribed waterlines), 6' 6" beam and between 4' 4" and 4' 5" draft. Another possible model scale might be 1/16 which would represent a vessel of 37' 9" LOA, between 24' 7" and 25' 6" LWL, 8' 8" beam and between 5' 9" and 5' 10" draft. None of the titles of the preliminary plans of unbuilt vessels at M.I.T. fits these dimensions. Likewise, there is not a single HMCo built vessel in the database which perfectly fits these dimensions. However, three vessels come fairly close: #431s Morwena from 1892, #679s Delight from 1908, and #702s Wink from 1910. All three were based on 1/12 scale models. Morwena had a fin-keel and thus warrants no further investigation. Both, Delight and Wink were Universal Rule Class S-boats.
Visual analysis of the model suggests a knockabout from the first decade of the 20th century. Compare, for instance, with model 202 for #549s Rogue from 1901 which bears a fairly strong similarity but has comparatively more draft and a little less forward hull volume. Likewise, quite similar is the (smaller!) study model 1302 from October 1909, which at a scale of 1/12 represents an S-boat and has the same bow and stern outlines, the same sheer, but considerably more draft.
However, visually by far the most similar model is model 8 for the S-boat #679s Delight. Likewise, there is a very close dimensional match. Delight was 28' 5" LOA, 19' 6" LWL, 6' 3" beam and 4' 7" draft. Thus, the vessel represented by the Koch model would have had 0.4% and 2.0% shorter LOA and LWL, 3.8% more beam and 4.2% less draft.
We may assume that this model was intended for a knockabout of the Universal Rule Class S." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. February 3, 2011.)
