"Commodore George B. Hayes of the Buffalo Yacht Club, whose new Herreshoff steam yacht, the Bessie Ross, is now making her way up the Mississippi, received word yesterday from Arthur Hayes that the boat passed Memphis, Tenn., last Saturday. 'Tis a tedious trip, says Mr. Hayes, and the yacht is due to reach Chicago about June 1. The boat will be somewhat overhauled in the Windy City, and then a new crew will be placed in charge for the trip down the lakes to Buffalo. Commodore Hayes states that the boat will be thoroughly rejuvenated upon her arrival and remodeled, and that she will be run for pleasure only. 'She is no racer or crackerjack,' concluded he. The steamer is a flush decker, 93 feet long, of moderate beam, and has a draught of five feet. She was formerly used as a Government cutter at Galveston, Tex." (Source: Anon. [No Title.] Buffalo Courier, May 8, 1895, p. 15.)

"There was a busy scene on board the steam yacht Augusta. Mr. Hayes has sold her to Herreschof [sic] who designed and built the yacht for quarantine service a Galveston, Texas, and she goes to New York to-day. Her mast was unstepped and wrapped on the deck and her fittings removed and packed. She will go through the canal to New York where she will be entirely refitted before being put into commission. The purpose of her purchaser is not known and all sorts of guesses are hazarded. The yacht was at one time called the Bessie Ross and was purchased last year from the Governor of Texas by Mr. Hayes, who brought her to Buffalo up the Mississippi River and down the lakes." "Steam yacht Augusta was taken out on the marine railway at Walker's Cove Friday [September 4, 1896] to undergo repairs. The Augusta met with a bad accident Thursday evening while attempting to pass through the railroad drawbridge at Tiverton. She is unnder charter by A. Harrison of Woods Holl and was on her way from Buzzards Bay to Fall River, where Mr Harrison was to join her. The Augusta in passing up the Saconnet river went through the draw at Stone Bridge without accident. The tide was setting south strongly at the railroad bridge, making the passage difficult. The force of the current threw the craft with much force against the abutments of the bridge causing considerable damage to the yacht." (Source: Anon. "Damage to a Yacht." "BRISTOL, R.I., July 14 [1897]. --- The torpedo boat Stiletto [#118p] got a pretty severe buffeting from wind and wave in Bristol harbor this morning, and for a while things looked squally for the craft. Together with the Government tug Leydon and the torpedo boat Cushing [#152p], the Stiletto was here for the trial of the torpedo boat Dupont [#185p]. A southwest gale began to sweep the harbor about 8 o'clock, and things were soon in such bad shape that the Cushing hoisted anchor and steamed off shore half a mile, where she found a berth where she could swing free.
The Stiletto had dragged ber anchor somewhat, and was getting the full force of the wind and heavy sea, and was in great danger of smashing into a steam yacht anchored near her. She soon attempted to follow the example of the Cushing. It was found impossible to raise the anchor, and as a collision seemed inevitable, the cable was slipped and the torpedo boat got away. By this time the wind was blowing forty miles an hour or more, and the waves were dashing clear over the little craft. She went ahead a bit, but the steam yacht Augusta [#146p Augusta II] was in the way, and do what they could, the officers on the torpedo boat could not clear the steam yacht, and the two came together with a crash. They bounded together a couple of times, and the Augusta got the worst of it.
The Stiletto finally cleared and headed away for Newport, but it was with difficulty that she made headway against the wind and sea. She was washed from stem to stern every time she buried her nose in the sea. She managed to pull through all right. (Source: Anon. "Stiletto in Collision. Note considerable informational overlap with Casting Book # 1, which as in this book also contains data for #99p through #116p, although it appears (!) that Book # 4 lists more patterns per boat than Book # 1. Likewise, considerable overlap with Casting Books # 2 and # 3 which also contain data for boats that are also listed in book # 4. It may well be that information in Book # 4 was copied from books # 1, # 2 and 3." (Source: MIT Museum, Hart Nautical Collections, Haffenreffer-Herreshoff Collection Item HH.6.120-07. Supplement

From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
  • Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.

From the 1930s L. Francis Herreshoff Index Cards at the Herreshoff Marine Museum
  • Note: The L. Francis Herreshoff index cards comprise a set of some 1200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and / or ownership information. Apparently compiled in the early 1930s, for later HMCo-built boats like the Fishers Island 23s or the Northeast Harbor 30s are not included. Added to in later decades, apparently by L. F. Herreshoff as well as his long-time secretary Muriel Vaughn and others. Also 46 cards of L. F. Herreshoff-designed vessels. The original set of index cards is held by the Herreshoff Marine Museum and permission to display is gratefully acknowledged.

"In the absence of better available data displacement was estimated by using the figure for Gross Register Tons (38.95) from the 1888 Manning's American Yacht List (Net Register Tons were reported as 19.48) and converting to lbs by dividing through 2000 (short tons). Note that this figure can only be a rough estimate because register tons as reported in Yacht Registers correlate only loosely with actual displacement figures." (Source: van der Linde, Claas.
