L. Francis Herreshoff

"... the Herreshoff Company also built three other quite similar yachts with similar power plants: they were 'Quickstep,' built for Frederick Grinnell in 1902, one hundred and twenty-four feet long; 'Parthenia,' built for Morton F. Plant in 1903, one hundred and thirty feet long; and 'Eugenia,' built for J. B. Herreshoff in 1904, one hundred and thirteen feet long. These yachts were of very similar model but had different cabin arrangements and quite different deck houses." (Source: Herreshoff, L. Francis. The Wizard of Bristol. "A very pretty launching took place yesterday forenoon about 11.30 o'clock from Herreshoffs' south construction shop, when the handsome steam yacht Quickstep, built for Frederic Grinnell of Fairhaven, Mass., was put overboard. Russell Grinnell, son of tbe owner, and his wife were present at the launching, and as the yacht started down the ways Mrs. Grinnell christened it Quickstep.
The new yacht was taken in to the wharf after it floated and later was towed to Walker's Cove where the finishing touches will be put on the yacht. It will take about a month to complete her. The woodworkers hare considerable to do and the engine and boiler are set up but are not yet connected.
Quickstep is of composite construction, with steel frames and yellow pine planking. Her length is 122 feet over all, 104 feet water line and her breadth of beam 18 feet. Her contract speed is about 15 knots an hour. The interior finishing is of mahogany and butternut and tbe crew's quarters, which are said to be the best of any seen in the latest models of steam yachts, are located in the stern,.
She is equipped with an electric lighting plant and has every convenience found in modern up-to-date steam yachts. The yacht is intended for deep water cruising and has bilge keels on each side to prevent rolling in a seaway as much as possible.
The owner of the yacht is to leave for Europe and will return in about a month, when the new boat will be ready for him. The engineer of the yacht is to be William H. Walter of this town.
Mr. Grinnell is the owner of the schooner yacht Quickstep, and is a member of several yacht clubs." (Source: Anon. "Pretty Launching. Steam Yacht Quickstep Put Overboard from Herreshoff Shops Yesterday Forenoon." Bristol Phoenix, March 11, 1902, p. 3.)

"Notes for the Yachtsmen. ... Frederick Grinnell's new steam yacht Quickstep was launched at the Herreshoff shops and moored in Walker's Cove to be fitted out for a cruise next Summer. The Quickstep is 130 feet in length, 18 feet beam and has a a school [sic] draught. She is an able-looking craft and has two deck houses and a bridge surmounting the forward one. She is painted white and has a fine sheer. She is fitted with a Herreshoff boiler and engine, the latter having an 11-inch stroke. ..." (Source: Anon. "August Belmont's New Yacht." "... The steam yacht Quickstep, owned by Frederic Grinnell of New Bedford, Mass., now in Europe, was hauled around from Walker' s Cove into the slip, between the piers, at Herreshoffs Wednesday, to be finished up, so that the steamer will be in readiness for her owner, when he returns from his European trip. Her spars are not in yet and the carpenters have considerable work to do on her. ..." (Source: Anon. "Yachting Notes." Bristol Phoenix, April 25, 1902, p. 2.)

"The boat yards of the Herreshoff Manufacturing Co. at Walker's Cove, Bristol, R. I., which ordinarily about this time of the year present a very busy appearance, seem to be in line with the general trend of boating at the present time and there is but very little doing. The same condition exists in the three shops of the company, nearly all of the employees of which have been laid off until further orders are received.
Herreshoff was fortunate in having his yards selected as the winter resting place of numerous craft, of all sizes, and kinds, and last fall it was expected that the following spring would be one of the busiest seasons which the company had had for some time past. It is believed by the Bristol yachtsmen, however, that the recent panic affected to a greater or less degree the sport, which is a very costly one. Indeed, and not until the effects of the panic have worn off will there be as great interest and activity manifested as there was last year.
There are now at Walker's cove the steam yacht Florence [#213p ex-Quickstep], owned by A. H. Alker of New York, and the Florette [#208p ex-Florence], a smaller craft, which is also owned by Mr. Alker; ...

Supplement

From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
  • Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.

From the 1930s L. Francis Herreshoff Index Cards at the Herreshoff Marine Museum
  • Note: The L. Francis Herreshoff index cards comprise a set of some 1200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and / or ownership information. Apparently compiled in the early 1930s, for later HMCo-built boats like the Fishers Island 23s or the Northeast Harbor 30s are not included. Added to in later decades, apparently by L. F. Herreshoff as well as his long-time secretary Muriel Vaughn and others. Also 46 cards of L. F. Herreshoff-designed vessels. The original set of index cards is held by the Herreshoff Marine Museum and permission to display is gratefully acknowledged.

A comparison of the two transcriptions can be particularly useful in those many cases where the handwriting in the Construction Record is difficult to decipher.

"Sold in 1905 to A. H. Alker [who also took delivery of #626s Alera that year]." (Source: Herreshoff Manufacturing Company. [Note on Vessel Name Index Card.] No date.)

"A 'Herreshoff triple expansion steam engine, steeple type, cylinders 8 --- 12 1/4 --- 20, 11 in. stroke.' was listed in the 1924 auction catalog when HMCo was auctioned off. This would appear to have been the old engine for #213p Quickstep or #222p Parthenia for they were the only HMCo-built vessel to be equipped with such an engine. Parthenia's engine was reported by the 1925 Lloyd's Register as having been removed and replaced by a Diesel engine. Thus, this appears to have been Parthenia's engine. But note that Quickstep was also listed in later years as having an oil engine, although it is unclear just when it was replaced." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. May 18, 2015.)
