"The Herreshoff Manufacturing Company has just received from the United States Navy Department an order for a new combination ferry and fire boat for use at the United States Naval Torpedo Station at Newport to replace the present boat, the Wave [#261p], which is too small for the increased traffic between the Torpedo Station and the city of Newport. The craft is to be completed by Jan. 1st next, and will be nearly twice the size of the Wave. [Is this a reference to #280p Inca? NGH recorded her contract only a year later, on June 23, 1911.]" (Source: Anon. "Bristol and Vicinity." Bristol Phoenix, July 19, 1910, p. 2.)

"Work was began yesterday at the boat shops of the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company on a new ferryboat for the United States Navy Department. The craft, which will be double-ended, will be about 100 feet long, and is to be used between Newport and the Naval Torpedo Station at Goat Island. The present ferryboat, 'Wave' [#261p] is too small for the increasing traffic between these two points. The boat is to be completed next Fall." (Source: Anon. "Bristol and Vicinity." Bristol Phoenix, June 27, 1911, p. 2.)

"The new ferryboat for the United States Training Station at Newport was launched at the Herreshoff works about noon yesterday and will be delivered shortly. She is planned somewhat after the Wave [#261p], which was also built at these shops, and like the Wave will serve the [station as both] ferry boat and fireboat, being equipped with powerful pumps and a water gun, in addition to plugs for lines of hose. She has been christened the Inca, a name once carried by a tug in the service. The craft is 101 feet over all and 30 feet beam, thus having the stunted appearance of the Wave [#261p]. Her draft is 7 feet and she is planned to have a capacity of 500 passengers." Source: Anon. "New Ferryboat Launched." November 10, 1911, p. 2.)

"New Federal ferryboat Inca, to run between Newport, R.I., and the Naval Training Station, was launched at the Herreshoff yard, Bristol, Nov. 9 [1911]. She is 101 feet over all, 30 feet beam and 10 knots speed, with 175 h.p. and carries 500 passengers." (Source: Anon. "No Title." Nautical Gazette, November 22, 1911, p. 19.)

"Inca II. (Str: l.100'; b. 28'). The second Inca, a steam ferry, was built for the Navy by Herreshoff Manufacturing Co., Bristol, R.I., in 1911, and accepted by the Navy 4 December 1911. She provided ferry service for Naval Training Station, Newport, until about 1920, when she was assigned to the Norfolk area. The ferry remained in service there until the thirties, when she moved to Philadelphia. Inca was stricken from the Navy List 28 February 1939." Supplement

From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
  • Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.

From the 1930s L. Francis Herreshoff Index Cards at the Herreshoff Marine Museum
  • Note: The L. Francis Herreshoff index cards comprise a set of some 1200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and / or ownership information. Apparently compiled in the early 1930s, for later HMCo-built boats like the Fishers Island 23s or the Northeast Harbor 30s are not included. Added to in later decades, apparently by L. F. Herreshoff as well as his long-time secretary Muriel Vaughn and others. Also 46 cards of L. F. Herreshoff-designed vessels. The original set of index cards is held by the Herreshoff Marine Museum and permission to display is gratefully acknowledged.
