"... Several trials were held off Bristol of the 60-foot power cruiser Shadow last week. This craft, built for Dr H. C. Ayer, in these trials showed a speed of 11 miles an hour. ..." (Source: Anon. "Notes from the Week's Log." Boston Globe, June 11, 1916, p. 65.)

"DR. JAMES C. AYER, of the New York Y. C., added another vessel to the long list he has owned and this year had Herreshoff build an auxiliary ketch, which for a vessel of her size, has wonderful accommodation, and proved to be fast under either sail or power. Shadow III, as the latest of Dr. Ayer's fleet is called, is 48 feet 8 inches over all, 46 feet 8 inches length on the water-line, 12 feet 5 inches extreme breadth, 5 feet 9 inches depth, and 3 feet 7 inches in draught. She is equipped with a four-cylinder, 5 1/2-inch by 6-inch slow-speed Van Blerck engine, developing 50 h.p. at 835 r.p.m.
Dr. Ayer has owned many yachts. According to the Yacht Register, his first was the auxiliary schooner Laurus, which was built by Poillon from designs by A. Cary Smith, in 1900. This vessel was 46 feet on the water-line. In 1903, he had an auxiliary yawl named Tempest, built by Jacob from designs by Crowninshield. This yacht was 27 feet on the water-line, and she had an Eagle engine installed. In 1907 Lawley built for Dr. Ayer the first Shadow, an 80-foot cruiser which was driven by a Standard engine. The second Shadow was a 40-footer, built from designs by Deed in 1912, and in this a Clifton engine was used. Dr. Ayer loves to sail, and so this year he had a vessel built which he could handle under sail or use the power when the wind was light, and his Shadow III pleases him in every way. The flaring bow makes the boat a very seaworthy one, and Dr. Ayer says he has seen few vessels of twice the Shadow's length that have such good seagoing qualities.
The yacht carries a knockabout ketch rig and makes good way under canvas and sails to about 7 points of the wind. A dinghy is carried on chocks on top of the after deckhouse, and this is launched by an ingenious bridle attachment to the main boom, using the topping-lift as a purchase. It can be launched by one person. The deck-house is 14 feet by 9 feet, and in it are the steering wheel and engine controls. It is furnished as a dining room.
A companionway leads from this deckhouse to the galley and the owner's quarters, which are below. In the owner's stateroom are two spring beds. The crew's quarters are aft of the engine space. The Shadow III is lighted by electricity. It has two cylindrical fuel tanks, each of 140 gallons' capacity, and an additional one of 100 gallons' capacity.
The engine is installed with the flywheel facing the stern. The propeller shaft runs under the engine and is connected to the crank shaft through two beveled herring-bone gears which run in a bath of oil. The ratio of these gears is 90 to 41. Thus the engine is run at 835 r.p.m. and the propeller turns 375 r.p.m. The propeller is four-bladed, 32 inches diameter, 48 inches pitch. The yacht can make 9 nautical or 10.36 statute miles an hour." (Source: Anon. "Dr. J. C. Ayer's Shadow III." Rudder, December 1916, p. 540-541.)

"The first gathering of 'ancient boats' or as Nancy Lamdin calls them 'Boats with Character,' was held at the Ferry Boat Marina in Cambridge, Md. as part of Dorchester County's 300th Anniversary celebration. Mrs. Lamdin is editor of the Binnacle, a local boating magazine which sponsored the get-together.
A total of 35 boats, 30 years old or more, were present. There was a contest for the best boat kept in original condition and a parade. The boats were divided into power and sail groups and were grouped according to size -- 26 feet, 26 to 40 feet, and over 40 feet. Howard Chappelle, curator of the marine section of the Smithsonian Museum, Lawrence Hartje, outstanding marine surveyer, and William B. Matthews, Jr., were the judges. "FORT PIERCE. Two women escaped injury late Thursday when their 48-foot boat rammed the South Bridge over the Indian River.
Coast Guard spokesmen identifed the operator of the 58-year-old wooden boat as Ida Lenihan of Pirate's Cove Marina in Port Salerno.
A passenger on the boat, Janet Lenihan, said yesterday, 'I'm sorry, we had a bad time of it yesterday and I just don't feel like talking.'
The handmade classic boat, the 'Shadow', sustained heavy damage when the cabin caved in.
Sources at the Fort Pierce City Marina, where the boat was brought right after the accident, said the women apparently couldn't get the boat's gears to stay in reverse.
The boat was towed to David Lowe's Boatyard in Port Salerno yesterday where it will be repaired. [Image caption: ] This is what the 'Shadow' looked like after it collided with the South Bridge at Fort Pierce Thursday. The boat was heavily damaged about the cabin area." (Source: Anon. I had been working on the designs of such a boat as I would like, for my own cruising, last winter at Bermuda and this winter with no intent to build, simply amusement. The design is from a model I made for myself in 1914, and used at scale of 5/8in per foot for #300 [SHADOW III], and also for #301 [MAGISTRATE] at 1/2in per foot and 15in frames spaces for the MAGISTRATE. Supplement

From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
  • Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.

From the 1930s L. Francis Herreshoff Index Cards at the Herreshoff Marine Museum
  • Note: The L. Francis Herreshoff index cards comprise a set of some 1200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and / or ownership information. Apparently compiled in the early 1930s, for later HMCo-built boats like the Fishers Island 23s or the Northeast Harbor 30s are not included. Added to in later decades, apparently by L. F. Herreshoff as well as his long-time secretary Muriel Vaughn and others. Also 46 cards of L. F. Herreshoff-designed vessels. The original set of index cards is held by the Herreshoff Marine Museum and permission to display is gratefully acknowledged.
