L. Francis Herreshoff

"While most of the yachts built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in 1902 were steam or rather small sail yachts, they did build the one-design class of Buzzards Bay thirty-footers. There were twelve of these and their dimensions were: L.O.A., forty-six feet six inches; L.W.L., thirty feet; beam, ten feet ten inches; draft, five feet four inches; weight of lead about ten thousand pounds; S.A. one thousand three hundred and twenty-five square feet. They were centerboarders for the shallow waters of Buzzards Bay, and originally set a small club topsail from their masthead which was run up a little above the peak halyards and jib stay. They may be distinguished from the Bar Harbor Thirties by this peculiarity. Some of the Buzzards Bay Thirties are still going and make good cruisers with their shallow draft if the rig has been reduced and modernized." (Source: Herreshoff, L. Francis. The Wizard of Bristol. The Life and Achievements of Nathanael Greene Herreshoff, together with An Account of Some of the Yachts he Designed. New York, 1953, p. 226.)

"There is considerable bustle in constructing the new centreboard thirty-footers at the Herreshoff shops. There is no time to throw away if the fourteen boats are to be ready in time for the beginning of the yachting season. It is understood that the boats will be drawn by lot the first part of April. Two-thirds of the fleet is now completed. Eight are stored in Walker's Cove yard." (Source: Anon. "Yachts in Bristol Yards." New York Times, January 10, 1902, p. 10.)

"No. 80 --- For Sale --- Most attractive 30-ft. cruising yawl, 47 ft. o. a., 5 ft. 3 in. draught; designed and built by Herreshoff. Very handsomely finished, double planked with brass screw fastenings, has narrow laid white pine deck, mahogany house with over 3 ft. of deck room on each side; mahogany skylights, rail, coaming, etc., brass Herreshoff capstan. Strongly built and a fine sea-boat; has made extensive cruises. Is in exceptional condition in every way and completely equipped. Is not necessary to spend a dollar to add to equipment or inventory. Is stiff and able, having 5 tons of outside lead ballast with moderate rig, and is one of the smartest yawls of this size afloat. Four fixed berths and two transoms, lockers, etc., in the main cabin, large toilet room with fixed wash-bowl, roomy galley with ice-box, stoves, etc., pipe berth forward. Cabin can be partitioned off by bulkheads which go with boat, making double stateroom aft. Lawley tender, new 1908. Two suits of sails, both in first-class condition, and extra spars. Has just been repainted and varnished and can be placed in commission at trifling expense. John G. Alden, 27 Kilby Street, Boston, Mass. [The advertisement certainly refers to #565s Quakeress II, because the dimensions and photo identify the vessel as a Buzzards Bay 30 and Quakeress II was the only BB30 which had been converted to yawl by 1910. Note however the advertisement for the cutter Quakeress II in the same issue a few pages later.]" (Source: Anon. "For Sale." Rudder, March 1910, p. 231.)

"No. 1032 --- For Sale --- Buzzards Bay One-Design Class 30-footer, Quakeress II, designed and built by Herreshoff; 46 ft. 6 in. o. a, 30 ft. w. l., 10 ft. 10 in. beam, 5 ft. 3 in. draught. Illustration shows what a remarkably handsome boat she is. Everything about her is most complete in every respect. Is constructed in the best Herreshoff manner, double planked, and fastened with brass screws. 5 tons of lead on the keel, with small centerboard housing in it, only used when going to windward in rough weather, as she handles easily without board. Full headroom in cabin, which is 10 ft. long and can be divided into passage stateroom and main cabin with two berths in each, or used as one large cabin. Equipment complete for cruising. New Lawley tender. The cabin is well lighted and airy. Two pipe berths forward. She has a beautiful wide deck with mahogany house and mahogany trimmings throughout. Comfortable, water-tight cockpit, which can accommodate seven people most comfortably, and as she is beautifully balanced she steers with great ease. Everything about this yacht is in perfect shape, and she is most desirable in every respect. Hollis Burgess Yacht Agency, 15 Exchange Street, Boston, Mass. [For two reasons a very strange advertisement: 1) By 1910 Quakeress II already had been rerigged as a yawl and was not a cutter anymore as shown in the accompanying photo. 2) In the same March 1910 issue two advertisements, one by John Alden and the other by Hollis Burgess himself, advertised what can only be identified as the yawl Footpad ex Quakeress II. Was Hollis Burgess hedging his bets and advertising the same boat both as a yawl and as a cutter?]" (Source: Anon. "For Sale." Rudder, March 1910, p. 245.)

"No. 1030 --- For Sale --- 30-ft. Herreshoff cruising yawl, 46 ft. o. a., 10 ft. 10 in. breadth, 5 ft. 3 in. draught; 5 tons of lead on keel. Small centerboard under cabin floor, but she handles perfectly without using it. Best Herreshoff construction, double planking, mahogany house and mahogany trim throughout. Cabin is well lighted, airy, has four berths and two transoms, lockers and extra large toilet room. Removable partitions convert cabin into two separate apartments when desired. Full headroom in cabin, toilet and galley. Two pipe berths forward, but one man is amply sufficient. Absolutely complete cruising inventory. Bronze blocks and cleats. Is perfectly balanced, steers easily on all points of sailing and handles beautifully under all conditions. Is handsome, comfortable, dry, tight, fast, able and staunch. Extra suit of sails, also two sets light sails. Watertight cockpit. Perfectly sound and ready for launching. Was scraped and painted since hauling out in October, 1909. Bright Lawley tender. Can be converted to auxiliary at low expense if desired. A great bargain. Hollis Burgess Yacht Agency, 15 Exchange Street, Boston, Mass. [The advertisement certainly refers to #565s Quakeress II, because the dimensions and photo identify the vessel as a Buzzards Bay 30 and Quakeress II was the only BB30 which had been converted to yawl by 1910. Note however the advertisement for the cutter Quakeress II in the same issue a few pages earlier.]" (Source: Anon. "For Sale." Rudder, March 1910, p. 248.)

"... One of the larger examples of a one-design boat was the Herreshoff Buzzards Bay 30, named for the length of the waterline. It was 46' overall with 1300 square feet of sail. The Harrisons bought one of the twelve that were built in 1902 [#565s Quakeress II]. She was the largest boat Sam Cahoon sailed for them. John Hitchcock [#562s Evelyn] and J. Arthur Beebe [#567s Pontiac] were other Falmouth owners. ...
Amazingly, the Buzzards Bay 30 Quakeress II is ... still with us. She was changed to a yawl rig in 1907, got an engine in 1934, was changed to Marconi rig in 1950, and was renamed Catspaw. Her home waters became Western Long Island Sound and Penobscot Bay, but she gallantly appeared at the Herreshoff Rendezvous in 1987. ..." (Source: Littell, Browne. Supplement

From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
  • Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.

From the 1930s L. Francis Herreshoff Index Cards at the Herreshoff Marine Museum
  • Note: The L. Francis Herreshoff index cards comprise a set of some 1200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and / or ownership information. Apparently compiled in the early 1930s, for later HMCo-built boats like the Fishers Island 23s or the Northeast Harbor 30s are not included. Added to in later decades, apparently by L. F. Herreshoff as well as his long-time secretary Muriel Vaughn and others. Also 46 cards of L. F. Herreshoff-designed vessels. The original set of index cards is held by the Herreshoff Marine Museum and permission to display is gratefully acknowledged.
