"Bar Harbor, Me., Saturday [July 30, 1904].— In spite of a very fresh wind, which reached almost to the dignity of a gale, the thirty-one footers went over the course to-day in their regular race.
The yachtsmen carried all sail and disdained to reef, and when they were coming to the finish line balloon jibs were flying in shreds. When about two miles on the course the mast of the Curlew carried away. She is owned by R. H. Gallatin, of New York. ..." (Source: Anon. "Curlew Loses Her Mast." "LARCHMONT, N.Y., July 18.[1936]. --- There was a fresh northeast breeze that called for working head sails to usher in the Larchmont Yacht Club's race week this afternoon, and through it came Henry C. Taylor's fifty-foot sloop Barbara, Van S. Merle - Smith's international twelve-meter Seven Seas and John B. Shethar's Valencia for victories among the large yachts.
It was a case of jumping through seas with rails under. The breeze only registered between fifteen and eighteen miles an hour, but when it blew up against the ebb tide the Sound kicked up. ...
Two Boats Lose Masts
Two yachts lost their masts. The 30-footer Alera [#626s], owned by Harold Palmer and E. H. Leslie, lost hers before the start. Shortly after the getaway the stick went out of H. S. Gardner Jr.'s handicap-class sloop Ariel [#598s], one of the old Buzzards Bay 30-footers [sic, i.e. Bar Harbor]. Her crew went overboard and gathered in the wreckage. Then she chugged back into harbor, having an auxiliary motor. Alera was towed in. ..." (Source: Robbins, James. "Taylor's Barbara Leads 50-Footers As 250 Yachts Sail. Dec. 19, 1947
Mr. L. Francis Herreshoff, The Castle, Marblehead, Mass.
Dear Sir: ... It might interest you to know that I am the satisfied and rather proud owner of one of your father's Bar Harbor designs named 'Ariel' originally named the 'Curlew.' The rig was modernised sometime before I bought it and the interior has been made very comfortable for cruising for myself, my wife and four small children, ages 8, 6, 4 and 2. We not only find it very comfortable for cruising, but simple and easy to handle and one of the fastest boats, boat for boat, sailing on the Sound today.
I have got her in really first-class shape through the efforts of the Minneford Yacht Yard and William Caesar, the surveyor. Very truly yours," (Source: Lockwood, George E. [Letter to L. "December 29, 1947
Mr. George E. Lockwood, 15 West 47th Street, New York, N. Y.
Dear Sir: I am very interested to hear that you have one of the Bar Harbor 30's, and believe that if she has good care she will last a good many years. No doubt in a good beam wind she will sail as fast, and faster, than a great many of the modern boats, and do this without the necessity of lapping jib, etc. ... Yours very truly," (Source: Herreshoff, L. Francis. [Letter to George E. Lockwood.] December 29, 1947. Mystic Seaport Museum, L. Supplement

From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
  • Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.

From the 1930s L. Francis Herreshoff Index Cards at the Herreshoff Marine Museum
  • Note: The L. Francis Herreshoff index cards comprise a set of some 1200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and / or ownership information. Apparently compiled in the early 1930s, for later HMCo-built boats like the Fishers Island 23s or the Northeast Harbor 30s are not included. Added to in later decades, apparently by L. F. Herreshoff as well as his long-time secretary Muriel Vaughn and others. Also 46 cards of L. F. Herreshoff-designed vessels. The original set of index cards is held by the Herreshoff Marine Museum and permission to display is gratefully acknowledged.
