"Herreshoff is building four small sloops for members of the Beverly-Yacht Club, which will be raced on Buzzards Bay. Thomas W. Slocum is having a sloop of the 'S' class built by Herreshoff, the six-meter boat [Sheila #861s] from the designs of W. Sterling Burgess for Paul Hammond is planked and the launches for Edgar Palmer's new auxiliary schooner Guinivere, building at Lawley's, are completed." (Source: Anon. "Notes from the Week's Log." Boston Globe, April 10, 1921, p. 59.)

"... Shiela was built at Herreshoffs from designs by W. Starling Burgess and Francis Herreshoff, a son of Capt. Nat. Herreshoff. She is owned by Rear-commodore Paul L. Hammond, former Commodore George F. Baker, Jr., of the New York Y. C., John F. Birmingham and Albert Strauss. Commodore Hammond sails this yacht, assisted by C. Sherman Hoyt and C. F. Havemeyer.
Genie was built by W. Starling Burgess at Provincetown from his own designs and is owned by Rear-commodore Frank C. Paine of the Corinthian Y. C. of Marblehead. Francis Herreshoff has usually sailed with Commodore Paine on this yacht, and abroad it is probable that Mr. Burgess will be the other member of the crew.
These two yachts, Shiela and Genie, are very different from anything we have seen on this side of the Atlantic. They are short-ended models, with full sections. Both measure 27 feet on deck. Genie is 22 feet on the water-line while Shiela is 23 feet 6 inches on the water-line. Shiela is a trifle broader than Genie, measuring 7 feet against the latter boat's 6 feet 11 inches. Each draws 5 feet 2 inches. Genie spreads 515 square feet of canvas and Shiela 475 square feet.
The British rule limits the height of the mast which must be solid for two thirds of its length to twice the water-line length. A study of these lengths show that Shiela's sail plan is tall and narrow and towers above those of other yachts. ..." (Source: Aldridge, A. F. "The Six-Metre Yachts." Rudder, July 1921, p. 11.)

"Herreshoff has turned out one good sized power cruiser this year, the Helianthus [#378p], for the personal use of N. G. Herreshoff, besides a fleet of nine S class boats [#852s S-Class for W. R. Potter, #853s S-Class for T. A. Howell, #854s Aminta, #855s S-Class, #856s S-Class for A. L. Londley, #857s S-Class for T. A. Howell, #858s S-Class for J. F. Byers, #859s S-Class for M. J. O'Brian, #864s Shona] that were distributed from Cape Ann to New York, and the six-metre Shiela [#861s] for the races on the other side, and it is reported that the firm is about to resume work on the 105-foot power cruiser [#377p Ara] for Alexander Winton of Cleveland. Work on her was stopped in December last year, and nothing has been done on her since that time, when a lot of the Herreshoff hands were laid off." (Source: Davis, Jeff. "Col. D. F. D. Neill has purchased the 6-metre yacht Sheila, from Mr. T. A. Macqueen, D.S.O.; she will be fitted out at Sandbank. Designed by W. S. Burgess, in 1921, she was built by Herreshoff for Mr. Paul Hammond. During the international contests over here she proved herself to be a hard weather craft in light winds, however, she was sadly handicapped, but on the Clyde she lifted the first prize during a pretty stiff breeze. It is the intention of her new owner to sail her in the handicap class." (Source: Anon. "News from the Clyde." The Yachtsman (England), April 26, 1924, p. 48.)

"No. 7067 --- FOR SALE --- Six Meter sloop. Designed and built by Herreshoff. Four suits of Ratsey sails. Has an excellent chance of making the American team and is practically all ready to launch. For further particulars apply R. M. Haddock, 50 East 42nd Street, New York City. [Though not identified by name, the sail number 4 on the accompanying photo and the overly long mast jumper strut clearly identifies her as Sheila.]" (Source: Anon. "For Sale." "Sheila was the first boat built at the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company that wasn't designed by Capt Nat Herreshoff. Starling Burgess, an aircraft designer and close friend of Herreshoff designed Sheila for Paul Hammond. She was on the first American team of six-meter boats to race in England in 1921. Her sail number was US4. After the race she remained in England.
Iain Rutherford bought Sheila, in August 1933. He wrote a book called 'At the Tiller' about his journeys in her around the North West coast and islands of Scotland but also his circumnavigation of Ireland and his trip to Norway.
In 1938 she was sold to A.W. Blair who kept her on the Clyde, converted to a yawl and converted back to her original name, Sheila. She was cruised and raced by him until 1953 when she was sold to Tony Withers. She reverted to sloop rig in 1959, when she was sold to a Mr Brown.
In 1964 she was bought by J Chambers and R E Shepperd and once more she was called Suilven. Between 1964 and 1969 she was badly damaged in Port Patrick in Scotland. She dragged her anchor and stove in part of her stern against the stone wall of the harbour. Due to the weight of lead on her keel she sunk quickly and the pressure of air inside her hull broke up the decks. She was salvaged by Shepherd who had her repaired by local craftsmen.
Due to pressure of work she was virtually laid up between 1969 and 1973 when she was bought by M Gordon and J Allison. In 1975 she was sold to David Rennie who owned her until she was bought by Pete and Annie Hill in 1977.
When they bought her she was superficially run down but basically in very good order. They conducted a complete refit, taking out the engine and installing the present bridgedeck and watertight bulkheads and rebuilding the interior of the cabin from scratch. At the same time the deck was cleared of all fittings and recanvassed. They called the boat Sheila again and lived aboard her at Glasson Dock near Lancaster. Their sailing in her took place around the Irish sea. At this time she was apparently in perfect condition. The hull had a superb finish and she was kept immaculately.
Pete and Annie Hill built themselves another boat called Badger, in which they cruised extensively and wrote books, one of which was 'Voyaging on a Small Budget', Annie wrote regularly in the Yachting monthly. They sold Sheila in 1982, to Gerald O' Brien, when all the recommendations on the survey were carried out by Maurice Parvin of Gosport.
She was sold to an American, Ryan Castiller, who began a thorough refit. Ryan died towards the beginning of 1986 not having completed the refit. On 27th November 1986, Mr Robinson of Kent bought her. Eddy Richards of Cowes was commissioned to convert the boat back to her original spec and appearance. No plans were available but research revealed photos of Sheila from Beken of Cowes from which it was possible to restore her to her original appearance. The original deck lay out was reinstated with twin cockpits. New sails were supplied by Ratseys in 1989 (mainsail and racing genoa).
A new Vire single cylinder petrol engine was bought and fitted in 1990, complete with a folding 12.5" x 8" two bladed bronze prop. In 1994 the decks were recanvassed, but she will need the deck recanvassed in the next year or two.
3 years ago the topsides were recalked and a new stern was fitted. The rigging was renewed last year and the mast was completely refurbished and coated with 9 coats of Epiphanes varnish. The bronze rudder pintles were replaced with new bronze fittings. And this year the engine was rebuilt." (Source: Anon (Melissa Morrow?). "For Sale - ‘Sheila’. 1921 Classic Herreshoff Yacht." "The Paine Six Meter, named Jeanie, was designed by Burgess with Frank Paine's active collaboration ... She was built over the winter of 1920-21, in the small boat shop attached to the Burgesses' house in Provincetown, to a construction plan drawn by Norman L. Skene. Meanwhile, the Hammond Six Meter, Sheila, also designed by Burgess, was taking shape in the Herreshoff shops at Bristol, to a construction plan drawn by Francis Herreshoff. According to Yachting, Sheilas co-owners were George F. Baker Jr., John F. Bermingham, and Albert Strauss, although Francis Herreshoff later suggested that marine underwriter Percy Chubb was also an owner.
Jeanie and Sheila were far more extreme than the two Sixes being built to William Gardner's designs by rival American teams on Long Island Sound and the dozen or more contenders being built in Britain to designs by Alfred Mylne, William Fife, Morgan Giles, and Charles E. Nicholson, all of whom had had far more experience designing to the International Rule and British scantling rules than Burgess. ... But the new Burgess boats had much shorter ends and longer waterlines than the rest of the 1921 fleet, and hooked masts with outsized spreaders and jumpers. ...
Arthur F. Aldridge of Yachting tells us that 'Sheila, with the longest waterline and a larger displacement than Jeanie, had a smaller sail plan and higher rig.' Aldridge adds that 'the wind plays on the rigging [of Sheila and Jeanie] as on an Aeolian harp' ...
In his letter to Robert D. Schultz, Francis Herreshoff wrote that 'while Jeanie had small and short ends to reduce her bow and stern girth measurements ... Sheila was designed with a stern cut off forward of her after girth measurements... . This allowed her other dimensions to be larger. Still, when she was measured in Cowes ... she was measured as if her stern were carried out to the girth measurement, so that to bring her into the class the sail area had to be greatly reduced. Thus, altogether, Sheila and Jeanie were strange looking, homely craft.'
How did the Burgess-Paine and Burgess-Herreshoff half sisters fare in their American trials? Not well. ...
In the actual competition for the British-American Cup on the Solent, the Burgess boats showed moments of real speed but were bedeviled by mast and rigging failures. ...
... Hammonds short-ended Sheila remained in England under new ownership. Over time and with a new rig and the addition of Spartan cruising accommodations, Sheila sailed many coastal and offshore miles in speed, safety, and discomfort. Frank Paine s Jeanie, on the other hand, made it into Lloyd's Register of American Yachts for only one year before disappearing from the history books without a trace. ..." "Sheila was the first sailing yacht built by the Herreshoff Mfg. Co. that had not been designed by NGH or a member of the Herreshoff family. It is fitting, however, that W. Starling Burgess should have been the designer to break the long-standing tradition. Like his father, Edward, W. Starling Burgess was a close family friend, had owned boats designed by Herreshoff, and had spent a good deal of time in Bristol, most recently revamping Vanitie for the 1920 America's Cup trials. Moreover, NGH's thirty-year-old son L. Francis was now working for the Provincetown-based (soon to be Boston-based) Burgess and had drawn many of Burgess's years as an aircraft designer had put him in the forefront among yacht designers experimenting with the Marconi rig. Sheila's mast is curved like an S-boat's, but is rigged quite differently, with double spreaders and a long, forward-looking span stay. Her double-cockpit arrangement and short overhangs created considerable comment.
Sheila was designed and built for Paul Hammond, who later owned the famous schooner Nina and was a member of the syndicate that built the 1930 J-boat Whirlwind. Sheila, along with three other boats of the same class by other builders, was shipped to England for the 1921 newly inaugurated international Six-Meter races, where she and the other American boats fared rather poorly. This is not to say, however, that Sheila went unappreciated in English waters. Indeed, her cruising exploits became the subject of a book, and she remains in active commission in England today --- some sixty-seven years after she first took to the water in Bristol, Rhode Island. ..." "[Item Description:] hope to bring out #721s CAROLINA in 1921, am not interested in keel R-boat you suggest, might have been interested in a centerboard R-boat which you think is not worth trying, Hammond is still desirous that you should build him a 6mR boat [#861s SHEILA], 'Shut-down at Bristol, I personally much regret, but if we cannot get payments on time from Mr. Winton [for #377p ARA], it seems necessary either to do it or to borrow sizable additional amounts of money, which I don't like. My feeling is that our help can doubtless stand a short shut-down without suffering, and that the labor conditions elsewhere are in such shape that we are unlikely to lose any appreciable number. If a shut-down is determined on, I believe it should be complete and now rather than next month', 'feel that the situation is a serious one, but not really alarming if we keep cool and husband our resources'" (Source: Nichols, George. "[Item Transcription:] [Typewritten letter on 'Lawrence Gas Company, R. W. Emmons, 2d. Treasurer, 79 Milk Street, Boston, Massachusetts' stationery:] I called the office yesterday, and they reported that you were still confined to the house with a cold, for which I was sorry to hear.
I am writing to say that I would like to place an order for one 6 metre boat for the races on the other side with you now, the situation being that there will probably a second order to follow if you care to take two orders, which will give you a chance to develop two boats along the different types discussed when my cousin and I were down at Bristol last week. Personally, I have just come to the conclusion today that I will not participate. My cousin, however, and Jack Parkinson have not definitely decided not to go fifty-fifty on one boat. If they do, Mr. Hammond in New York is very desirous of getting you to build another boat [this will become #861s SHEILA], and he volunteers to take either one which my cousin and Parkinson do not select. Furthermore, in the event of either not deciding to go in, two friends of mine here, Mr. Saltonstall and Mr. Boardman are anxious to take the boat which would be ordinarily designed for us.
Therefore, if you care to do so, there is a definite order for one boat now with the chances very decidedly in favor of your getting a second order for another one within a week.
I am writing this partly at the request of others in order that you may have all the time there is to think the question over.
I understand from New York that Gardner's boat is quite long ended, moderate type of boat, under body something like [p. 2] a small VANITIE; on the other hand the Burgess boat [#861s SHEILA] which he prefers after making three or four models is considerably after the type of the fish car [Model 1206?] which you showed us, although not quite as extreme. Both of the above referred to boats are considerably less beam.
This is all I will put on paper, but I will come and see you and give you more details in person.
Yours very truly ..." (Source: Emmons, Robert W. Letter to N.G. Herreshoff. Halsey C. Herreshoff Collection at the Herreshoff Marine Museum Item MR_58990. Unidentif. / Non-Cataloged, Folder [no #], formerly 254?. 1921-01-04.)

"[Item Transcription:] [Handwritten reply to NGH letter to Starling Burgess:] Dear Sir:
Mr. Burgess has instructed me to answer your letter of April 13th as he is at present is[sic] very busy stepping masts etc in MAYFLOWER.
The details of rigging on # 216G [#861s SHEILA] have been left to me and I am responsible for mistakes and departures from the customary practice.
Nevertheless I have considered very carefully the disadvantages of fixed ends of standing rigging the amount of cristalization[sic] and abrasion caused by flapping shrouds of which of course I am familiar but there are different kinds of wire and the qualities of 19 wire air craft Strand are sutch[sic] that I am not nearly as worried about the wire braking as I am about the sockets pulling off [p. 3] and for that reason tried to make a socket that could be soldered from the upper end.
The shrinkage of manganese bronze in thick laces has allso[sic] been considered and ample allowance for the same has been shown on drawings for castings this metal with proper sizes.
Nevertheless if in the case of the upper rigging if you can simplify the work by makeing[sic] a one piece flange with separate sockets that are equaly[sic] strong and as light I would be very glad of the improvement as indicated in yesterdays telagram[sic].
I have probably will[sic] be many things that are not your common practice in the rigging drawings and the responsibility of failure from them will come on me and i am very anxious to try these things and expect critasisam[sic] and mistakes but hope to learn something without coppying[sic].
The boom socket and clew outhall[sic] have [p. 3] arrived and I am mutch[sic] pleased, with the square pin heads which are a great improvement.
Yours very truly ..." (Source: Herreshoff, L. Francis. Letter to N.G. Herreshoff. Halsey C. Herreshoff Collection at the Herreshoff Marine Museum Item MR_06860. Correspondence, Folder 24, formerly 210. 1921-04-14.)

"[Item Description:] am surprised at what you say about HMCo building without contracts, Paul Hammond [#861s SHEILA] situation okay, Brown [#379p MARIETTE] started with unsatisfactory contract, due to change from wooden to steel frames ordered by Mr. Brown project is delayed by several weeks, 'Methods of operation to which you are accustomed, as I tried to explain to you in New York, are only possible where you are personally present. Under this condition, they are the best in the world; but under them, the moment you leave the works, everything stops', incl. NGH reply: yesterday sailed Roosevelt S-boat [#870s SURINAM] against SHEILA which appeared a great success and all Sidney's new gear stood perfectly, was not worried about Paul Hammond having not signed contract, with Brown it is different, he is an older man not in sound condition similar to Vandervoort [#376p ESLOMA] but while the latter declared he would pay Gorvernment Tax Brown will not sign agreement to that extent, tax is levied on the builder and not the purchaser and Brown's attitude puts us in a very doubtful position" (Source: Nichols, George (incl NGH reply). Supplement

From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
  • Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.
