"The Cruise of the Zaidee. The First Yachting Trip of the Season from Newport Around the Cape to the Hub.
The following from the log of the schooner-yacht Zaidee will be read with interest:
Sunday afternoon, May 6, at 4 o'clock, the schooner-yacht Zaidee left Newport, R. I., for a pleasure cruise around Massachusetts bay, their final destination being the 'Hub.' The following gentlemen composed the party: George H. Tyler, owner, Captain James L. Fowler, pilot; T. W. Dempster, sailing master; William K. Miller, guest, and James Smit, boatkeeper. Outside Newport, the Zaidee hove to, and at 12 o'clock (midnight), anchored off Cuttyhunk. On the following morning, May 7, at 4 o'clock, got under way again and had a good run over the shoals, meeting some hundred or more vessels; passed Vineyard Haven and different light ships, and at 4 p.m. of the same day was saluted by the Pollock Rip light ship. Breeze freshening, kept on in our course, and at 7 o'clock p.m. passed the Nausett (three) lights, and at 8.16 o'clock made Highland light. The wind by this time had become quite stiff, which made it necessary for us to anchor, which we did off Peaked Hill Bars in three fathoms. Set the watch at 9. p.m.; the wind blew half a gale all night, passed pilot boat No. 4 under single-reefed mainsail standing to the southward; during this time the wind had not abated, and noticed that all passing vessels were reefed. In this sea the Zaidee behaved splendidly and proved herself a worthy sea boat. After gaining clear water, at 11 o'clock we hove to, spliced the main brace under direction of Mr. T. W. Dempster, and all hands going below, our jovial guest, Mr. William K. Miller, presented Captain George G. Tyler with a very fine pair of marine glasses. After a short time below we set sail and soon reached Race Point, where we anchored for fishing. The sea at this hour was too high for comfortable fishing, but nevertheless or friend, Mr. Dempster, succeeded in capturing a fifteen-pound cod. Not being very successful as disciples of Isaak Walton, we, at 1 o'clock, weighed anchor and shaped our course for Marblehead. There was nothing to break the monotony until at 4. 55 o'clock considerable excitement was occasioned when a 'spout' was seen under our lee quarter, and presently a huge whale was espied. At 6.15, the wind still heading us off, we took in our staysail and squared away for Gloucester, had a beautiful run, and at 16.30 o'clock anchored in Gloucester harbor. The crew had this evening turned in, and at 7 a.m. the following morning went ashore and took breakfast at the Gloucester House. Here we telegraphed to our friends in the 'Hub' that we had arrived in Gloucester, and during the forenoon Captain Fowler left for Boston on the tram. Later we received a telegram from Captain Frank H. Ward that he would join us here at 6 o'clock p. m. The party at once set about to 'do the city,' and were entertained by friends in a right royal manner. Through the courtesy of Mr. J. M. Hill the party witnessed the performance of Margaret Mather in two acts of 'Leah, the Forsaken.' In the evening the company enjoyed a convert at Concert Hall, being the guests of Mr. William Reilly, the manager. Our companion, Mr. T. W. Dempster, favored the company with some very fine selections. At 1.40 o'clock the 'boys' went aboard the Zaidee and turned in for the night, or rather the morning. After a late breakfast the anchor was weighed, and with a breeze of about five knots an hour we started on the return trip for home. Speedily rounded Egg Rock and 12.15 passed the Graves on our weather beam; at 12.35 rounded Deer Island, and in jibing the job-sheet halyard caught the fore hatch and carried it overboard. We speedily hove to; the boatman took the tender and soon recovered it. Put off again, nothing daunted, and at 1.15 landed at (Sunnyside) Winthrop, and were met by Captain Tyler's wife and mother. Here we had a collation, and at 4:30 left Winthrop for Boston by train." (Source: Anon. "Cruise of the Schooner Yacht Zaidee from Newport to the Hub." Boston Daily Globe, May 13, 1883, p. 2)
"The cutter Ella May, built this year by Lawley, and the schooner Zaidee, built by Herreshoff, both belonging to the estate of the late Geo. H Tyler, are for sale. The ... Zaidee is 28 1/4 x 10 by 5ft. draft." (Source: Anon. "Cutter and Schooner for Sale." Forest and Stream, September 4, 1884, p. 116.)

From the 1930s L. Francis Herreshoff Index Cards at the Herreshoff Marine Museum
- Note: The L. Francis Herreshoff index cards comprise a set of some 1200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and / or ownership information. Apparently compiled in the early 1930s, for later HMCo-built boats like the Fishers Island 23s or the Northeast Harbor 30s are not included. Added to in later decades, apparently by L. F. Herreshoff as well as his long-time secretary Muriel Vaughn and others. Also 46 cards of L. F. Herreshoff-designed vessels. The original set of index cards is held by the Herreshoff Marine Museum and permission to display is gratefully acknowledged.

Research Note(s)
"N. L. Stebbins neg. no. 1800, taken on July 2, 1888 and showing Iona and Zaidee apparently shows this Zaidee." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. May 2, 2008.)
"In the absence of better available data displacement was estimated by using the figure for Old Measurement Tons (15) from the 1881 Olsen's American Yacht List and converting to lbs by dividing through 2000 (short tons). Note that this figure can only be a rough estimate because register tons as reported in Yacht Registers correlate only loosely with actual displacement figures." (Source: van der Linde, Claas.
