There has been some talk of getting three [#190804es, #190805es, #190806es] or four of these to be used at the Beach by the children when in bathing, and I would like to know how much you would charge for them complete, if three or more were built? "[Item Transcription:] Last summer I took over to Hazards Beach, a little skiff [#189901es] that you built for my children to learn to sail in. You will remember the one with the leg o'mutton sail and centre board; and in their bathing clothes they had a great deal of amusement out of it, which incidentally suggested to the minds of two or three others that it would be rather good fun to get up a small class to race up and down the Beach while in bathing clothes. I have been asked therefore, by Robert Sedgwick, Jr. and Mrs. Woodbury Kane, to ask you to build for them each, one,- the only difference from mine being that they should steer with a tiller instead of an oar. You will remember you gave me an outside price last year, and hoped that possibly you might be able to cut that some. In accordance with that, my order would be:- One for myself [#190804es], one for Mrs. Woodbury Kane [#190805es], and one for Robert Sedgwick [#190806es], Jr.- all to be exactly the same as my original one, except all three with tillers, instead of oars; and I wish also to ask you to have made for me, a tiller and rudder for the one I have, complete, so that it could be put on by John Eriksen, who takes care of the boats.
I am afraid that all of you who are interested in the yachting line are doomed to a very quiet summer, as there seems to be little or no life in the yards or among the builders. I saw [broker] Fred Tams a few days ago, who said he was doing absolutely nothing, and reported that others were doing likewise. You, I know have plenty to do outside the yacht business, which I suppose has been very quiet with you. I am oping to get on later as I may have to go to Newport. If so, I shall endeavor to put in an hour at Bristol, but it is very uncertain.
You will be sorry to hear that Edwin was taken with pneumonia very early last December and was very ill indeed all winter, but is now convalescent, out and about,- he has lost a year in his studies and probably will not be normally himself again until next spring. At any rate, the doctor thinks he must do very little studying this summer, and not go back to school next winter. However, we are thankful to have him as well as he is.
P.S. It is lucky that the Lipton challenge was not accepted, as the subscribers to the boat probably would not have been able to pay.
