"Herreshoff Dinghy Job #3403, in the collection at Mystic Seaport, accession # 1974.930 is a wonderful example of one of [the Columbia lifeboat dinghies]. She was built in 1905 and is one of forty-nine boats shown on the plan, built to this design between 1901 and 1922. Her job number appears on plan 28-23 ... This boat was the subject of Barry Thomas’ monograph mentioned earlier [Thomas, Barry. Building the Herreshoff Dinghy. Mystic, Connecticut: Mystic Seaport Publications, 1977.], ... She is a 10/12ths scale version with the sheer modified in height by about 3 1/2" at the bow, dropping off to somewhat less at the transom. This boat was measured by Rob Pittaway, for the Seaport, and her lines recorded. Plans are available from the Ships Plans Department at Mystic Seaport. The boat itself is in outstanding condition, being of all original construction, and is a great example of the work of the Herreshoff yard." (Source: Snediker, David. "HERRESHOFF DINGHY JOB #3403 11'6"x4'1" 1905
'Job 3403 was an 11' 6" boat for sailing and rowing. Model of Columbia's lifeboat reduced 10/12 scale; it was ordered on 6 February 1905 for W. B. Duncan, Jr. [sic, i.e. for George A. Adee and the NY30 Adelaide II. See research note.] As far as I can make out 50 boats were built to this design, the first in 1901 and the last in 1922.' From a letter ---- William A. Baker, Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, to J. Revell Carr, Mystic Seaport, September 24, 1974.
A replica of this boat was built by Barry Thomas of Mystic Seaport's Small Craft Lab in 1975, utilizing Herreshoff Manufacturing Company construction methods. The monograph by Thomas [Thomas, Barry. Building the Herreshoff Dinghy. The Manufacturers Method. Mystic, Connecticut, 1977.] describes this building process in detail.
STATUS: Original including sail, excellent condition.

Research Note(s)

"As per notes on drawing 28-33 this dinghy was ordered on February 6, 1905 as Job 3403 for George A. Adee and not for W. B. Duncan, Jr. as was believed in 1974 by William A. Baker of the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections and quoted in Bray, Maynard with Benjamin A. G. Fuller and Peter T. Vermilya. Mystic Seaport Watercraft. Mystic, Connecticut, 2001, p. 26. An identical dinghy was ordered for W. B. Duncan, Jr. on the same day as Job 3402 and recorded just beneath the dinghy for George A. Adee on drawing 28-33. The names Adee and Duncan were connected to the respective job numbers with thin cross-wise lines which are easy to overlook, thus explaining the confusion. A few weeks earlier Adee and Duncan had contracted for #635s Adelaide II and #631s Dahinda and the two dinghies were intended as tenders for these New York Thirties." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. October 15, 2009.)

For Geo. A. Adee [as per an easily misinterpreted note on drawing 28-23]. Adee had previously ordered #635s Adelaide II implying that this dinghy was built for her." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. October 26, 2009.)

"This vessel's contract date was determined from notes on the original plan. Plan 28-23 from which this boat was built was drawn 1901-08. The vessel's job number 3403 was assigned ca. 1905-02-06. #635s Adelaide II (for which this vessel was built) was contracted for 1904-12-06. This boat's contract or building date is 62 days after #635s Adelaide II was contracted for." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. October 26, 2009.)
