"Commodore Harold S. Vanderbilt of the New York Yacht Club is planning to build a large schooner, probably 150 feet long on the waterline, in which he will do some distance cruising. He may take a voyage around the world in the vessel. These voyages are expected to be made after the expiration of his term as commodore of the club, which will be after the next December election. Commodore Vanderbilt will be succeeded by the present Vice Commodore of the club, George Nichols, who is also a racing yachtsman.
Another interesting feature of the new schooner, which will be a three-masted auxiliary, is that her plans are being drawn by 'Old Nat' Herreshoff, the creator of a glorious line of Cup defenders. Mr. Herreshoff is doing the work on his yacht, the Helianthus [#299p], which has been moored in Miami Bay, Fla., during the Winter. Although Mr. Herreshoff had practically retired from active work, he consented to work on the schooner plans for Commodore Vanderbilt, and this may be the veteran designer's 'last job.'
The new schooner, it is believed, will be built abroad." (Source: Anon. "Vanderbilt Plans 150-Foot Schooner. New York Yacht Club Commodore Intends New Craft for Deep Sea Cruises." New York Times, April 4, 1924, p. 24.)
"Capt. and Mrs Nathaniel G. Herreshoff, who have been spending the winter cruising in southern waters on their yacht 'Helianthus,' [#378p] with headquarters at the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club, Miami, Florida, arrived home on Tuesday [April 29, 1924]. While in Miami, Capt. Herreshoff occupied some of his time in making plans for an ocean-going yacht [#192301es Unbuilt Cruising Schooner] for Harold Vanderbilt. The boat, which if built, will probably be constructed abroad on account of the lower cost of labor, will be 150 feet on the water line and about 200 feet over all." (Source: Anon. "Bristol and Vicinity." Bristol Phoenix, May 6, 1924, p. 2.)
"... Capt Nat has been busy most of the winter designing a large schooner yacht [#192301es] for Harold Vanderbilt and has with him Charles G Nystrom, a well known local [sic, i.e. Bristol] draughtsman, to assist him. Mrs Nystrom, who was formerly Miss Margaret Oberg, daughter of William Oberg of this town [Bristol], is also spending the winter in Coconut Grove. ..." (Source: Anon (J. F. "[Item Transcription:] [Handwritten (in ink) letter:] Yesterday I got your letter from Saint Augustine and I am glad to hear that our doings in Palm Beach in general suited you. With the same mail came more[?] new suggestions [for #192301es Unbuilt Cruising Schooner for H.S. Vanderbilt] from Mr. Vanderbilt, cautiously marked 'not final'. He asked me to see the Marconi people about the size and layout for the wireless operator room, and I was told that our room was quite sufficient but they wanted to know available strength and voltage of the electrical equipment, something I don't think has been decided yet. --- They thought also that stays running parallel to their downtake ought to be insulated, something which of course has to be considered and properly worked out.
I work at present on the drawing for Lloyd[s], but am of course at loss what to do about the double bottom. Then Mr. Vanderbilt returns I shall take up the interior drawings and I as [? as I?] think that it might be a good plan to come and see you in Washington to get your layout for the double bottom that I might have the Lloyd drawing as complete as possible when you arrive here in New York. According to your schedule you should be in Washington on a Saturday which would suit me perfectly, Mr. V[anderbilt] probably being away anyhow.
Enclosed are your Specifications. Mr. V. told me to take a copy of them and send the original back to you. Apparently he will thoroughly look them over before he makes his final decision.
In your letter you mention that HELIANTHUS [#378p] probably will be ahead of time in Fernandina and that is why I send this letter to Thunderbolt, Ga.
I saw Mrs. and Mr. George Nichols and looked fine. Here is full snowstorm, a rather unpleasant 1st of April joke. I hope you and Mrs. Herreshoff are doing fine and that I soon shall see you.
Sincerely yours, ..." (Source: Nystrom, Charles G. Letter to N.G. Herreshoff. Halsey C. Herreshoff Collection at the Herreshoff Marine Museum Item WRDT06_01630. Folder [no #]. 1924-04-01.)

"[Item Transcription:] Your last letter of arrival home was duly re[ceive]d and we were all pleased even if you did report having a slight cold. We trust you are all over it by this time. We have had some fine rains and plenty of fine weather also, and the country looks very much better. The Cuais[?], Huntington, & Seaman & Bentons are here that[?] for[?] the latter leave with their car 4 am tomorrow taking Aunt Joe with them. Wirth is in charge of the additions to the Camp Lodge, foundations of which were poured yesterday. 'TRAMP' lying in the Basin is to be overhauled & put in commission for the Bahamas where she will remain indefinitely for St. Gardiners[?] Summer cruising. The junk left for the North some time ago but have seen no reference to her since. You had a slight misappen[?] henrion[?] as to the character of water she was most used in China, but count[?] in your surmise[?] that she would make hard work of it close hauled in a steep sea[?]. Her skipper said however that she would keep on going & was dry & comfortable, when heeled a bit, the low corners[?] are not so bad after all. They are chopped off I imagine, for conservation[?] of room as every thing has to be in that country. AMORY[?] belonged to the sea going type and in beating[?] out over the bars of those shallow wide mouthed rivers are subjected to the worst kinds of rough sea conditions. This is one reason that they use lee boards, instead of center ones as the center one is apt to jamb while the lee ones are held in place by rope, which when overtaxed parts and the board having a long pennant attached, floats astern is hauled aboard & replaced in position. SAVEE[?]. Had a nice sail to the Cape p.m. yesterday. Am beginning to figure slightly in a marconi rig but given not, til you lick me out of sight next Winter. Her paint is still standing good in the bottom. 4 1/2 months, and at moorings most of the time. Larry can't stand it much longer & is about ordering material for another boat, slightly longer than SUNSET with junk mid section which is O.K. for light draft. I am only doubtful about his rig which no doubt will be handy but slow to windward, possibly not, what do you think? I've known several very small light draft sloops in my day which used to run vystus[?] from the Chesapeake to N.Y. during the Winter. We[?] of them nearly fifty years old now. These craft were long, narrow, light draft center boarders, about knockabout in rig. Had some craft but only remember those there, knew[?] was probably something wrong. I recollect one of them going into the Jersey Beach by reason of a sudden shift of wind from N.W. to N.E. in a squall when in trying to take the jib off her long raking stay with the down haul to the windlass, it parted & the jib used went to the mast head forcing them to anchor which failed to hold. Their[?] masts were just forward of o.a. center. Larry proposes to put C.B. trunk by means of these[?] Chinese paertner[?], side supports which I decided to you, depending on job & preventer back stays to hold it for & aft. Main sail jib headed with jib only slightly smaller, to stem head. Her mast partners will be in cabin top so as to have a fair hold below. My doubts are mainly as I just stated, windward work. And yet all I can twink o off the bat is too much jib & taking[?] of mainsail luff & if made hin[?], then not enough area altogether without great hoist. It's interesting however & more easily changed than his double centerboard[?] was, if he don't like it. In the Havana 6 meter races I notice that one of them made the 12 triangular course in 1h 5min 6sec. If this is course is as I presume 12 nautical miles, these craft make better time than I have thought.
Had another fine sail to the Cape yesterday with cracking breeze S.S.E. Benton's & Aunt Joe off this morning early I don't envy them such a long auto trip. Dais[?] & ARGONAUT reached Washington just a day or so behind you. Had fine runs, but about half way up the Potomac took a squall which brought them to a standstill. Well, just been out & washed some of the salt out of the mainsail & dried it, so will furl & put the cover on. Quite cool, only just taken my coat off. Our best wishes to you all. Neptunus[?] included.
Sincerely ...

Supplement
From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
- Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.
Research Note(s)
"Note: Size and specifications for this unbuilt schooner changed considerably over the course of several years and thus this entry comprises designs for several boats and is based on three models: the first Model 1523, the intermediate Model 1135, and the final Model 1432." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. November 28, 2015.)
"According to a note in the Bristol Phoenix of May 6, 1924 (p. 2) this schooner had been intended to have been built abroad." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. June 8, 2016.)
Note: Research notes contain information about a vessel that is often random and unedited but has been deemed useful for future research.
