"[Item Transcription:] I have taken sections off the model [No. 1128 at HMM for #193006es Unbuilt Day Sailing Boat] at 2ft 6in spaces, that fall on # 2-6-10-14-18-[center]20-26-30-34-38-42 frame spaces, and have carefully drawn them on the accompanying sheet, ready for younger eyes than mine to measure the offsets and I suggest that you measure the offsets on the radiated lines that I have laid out, and put corresponding lines on the scrive-board and take all measurements from the origin of the radial lines, and use the same measurements on mould floor for fairing up diagonals.
Of course you must resort to right-angle coordinates for the half-breadths & sheer, for the keel offsets. I think you will see the advantage of using this system.
I make the displacement 39.3 [corrected in pencil to '59.3' by 'E.M.'] = 3800 lbs. and my tentative weight layout us as follows:
Hull complete & rudder 1300 lbs
Rig 120 lbs
Equipment 70 lbs
Water soaking 100 lbs
Crew (2) 320 lbs = 1910
Outside & inside ballast 1890
[Sum] 3800
[Page 2] The result of calculations indicate a somewhat greater displacement and also stability than I intended, and instead of 225 sqft sail area, the stability warrants about 250 or 260 sq ft. I will send you sketch of rig in a few days.
You have not indicated on the 1in scale drawing (which I am returning) which plan of accommodations you will use. Perhaps you have not decided. For comfort that one with low benches and high coaming is certainly best but for racing in all kinds of weather that one with watertight cockpit & scuppers will be best. As I mentioned before I w'ld have the pendant rudder and no deadwood after the lead --- in which case the lead pattern should be finely tapered away aft aft end. (Like a fishes tail.)
Referring to the drawing. --- I have only guessed at the limits of lead. Your draftsman should make careful calculations to get correct weight & position after the scriveboard has been developed .
A little decrease in draft is permissible or a slab of wood between main keel & lead if the volume is too much. If too little [Page 3] the ends can be extended.
I have indicated some corrections on the drawing --- generally with red pencil. The water line is drawn about 5/.8in too low. Length of l.w.l. is intended to be 22ft 0in. The stem was not correctly drawn. Steam & bend stem piece as to to be about 4in moulded way. Drop the main keel down as indicated, so there is no deadwood under it forward of [frame] # 10.
I have given the boat considerable depth forward, so to eliminate pounding in a seaway as much as possible. Make the floor timbers deeper as indicated, in the forward body. Keel plank 1 3/4in thick should be ample. For the timbers abrest the c.b. casing (# 20 - 26 inclusive) I proposed getting them out with deep lower end and thick enough so to have a good landing on the keel for 2 bolts.
Instead of using any floor timbers lay out the aft post of c.b. casing from centre about 4in above c.b. pin, so to have space at back of c.b. for pawl, just below top of casing.
Referring to the oversize, one way to reduce it w'ld be to decrease the size of outside lead, say 300 or 350lbs. The depth about 1in off sheer height and the sail area to 225 sqft. [Page 4] This w'ld make her about 20 1/2ft l.w.l., a little more freeboard, but I don't think would be so good boat.
If there are any suggestions or changes please write or wire promptly.
Very truly yours, ..." (Source: Herreshoff, N.G. Letter to Nystrom, Charles G. (Herreshoff Manufacturing Co.). MIT Museum, Hart Nautical Collections, Haffenreffer-Herreshoff Collection Item HH.6.033. Box HAFH.6.1B, Folder Hull No. 1164 [sic]. 1930-02-16.)
