2016.07.26: “Further upgrades to BANDIT commenced on May 23, 2016 when hull# 1137 was returned to Bristol, RI to have her white oak transom replaced and all planks below the waterline splined for increased tightness and recaulking. Both tasks were completed by East Passage Boatwrights of Bristol, RI on June 7, 2016.” (source: email) previous note: BANDIT was donated to the Museum by Mary Janney in about 2000. She is the daughter of the original owner. She sailed it from the Quisset Yacht Club. The current owner, a 1995 graduate of the Landing School of Boatbuilding & Design Small Boat Program, took the lead in completely rebuilding BANDIT and had it restored at Mt. Hope Boatworks in Bristol. Seth Hagen and Bro Dunn, professional boatbuilders and the current owner completed the restoration over a 2 1/2 year period under the watchful eye of Jim Titus, owner of Mt Hope Boatworks. BANDIT is approximately 85%+ new construction. The only original materials from her original construction in 1930 besides some of her hardware are her keel plank, deadwood, lead ballast, sheer clamps port and starboard and her original planking starting with the planks below her sheer plank, all the way down to her broad planks, both port and starboard. Extra care went into the selection of BANDIT's new white oak coamings and new Herreshoff style sheer strakes or rub rails. Both the coamings and sheer strakes are matchbook quarter-sawn white oak. All planks are full length, without butt blocks. BANDIT, purchased from the Herreshoff Museum, was in near derelict condition when purchased but still had her shape and represented a good reconstruction candidate, helped by a new white oak transom that the owner guesses was replaced approximately ten years earlier and done well enough to retain. Original builder's plate is in hand #1137. BANDIT sports all new silicon bronze bolting, all new silicone bronze fasteners and Jim Reineck & Son Herreshoff reproduction hardware. BANDIT can usually be seen participating in the annual Herreshoff Classic Boat Regatta in Bristol, RI.
