Comment:
"On the pantograph hull sections for #668s Dorothy Q NGH notes that this model was the 1st and unused model for the New York 57 class made on September 23, 1906. He first changed its keel for Dorothy Q and subsequently also sawed off its bow and fitted a much longer one for #669s Eleanor which had been contracted for on the same day as Dorothy Q. The old bow can still be inspected on top of the model. The new long bow resulted in a hollow forward deckline and exploited a loophole in NGH's own Universal Rule. For his subsequent Q- and P-boats NGH would continue to exploit this loophole, resulting in ever longer and heavier boats and culminating in #709s Joyant, nicknamed 'Joyant the giant'. The ensuing measuring scandal involving Joyant and #708s Corinthian resulted in a change in the Universal Rule and forbade hollow forward decklines, much to the dismay of NGH who argued it should have been changed in a way that did not overly restrict innovation."
