Model identification:
"Possibly newly identified model. This appears to be a model for an R-boat. In October/November 1920 NGH created a series of R-boat models for George Nichols, named Model A through E of which Model B has not been identified (and Model E is missing). This model may be Model B or be related to it. A plan (obj. no 2004.0001.0446, dated Oct. 15, 1920 and Nov. 7, 1920) in the Halsey C. Herreshoff Collection at the Herreshoff Marine Museum states that it is derived from Model B but differs in some respect from this model (even though its bow and forward keel profile are very similar). A set of penciled pantograph hull sections from the Halsey C. Herreshoff Collection at the Herreshoff Marine Museum titled 'Model B of Oct[ober] 15, 1920. Cut over July 12, 1929. 1st trial' also references Model B. (Compare this model with Model 1537 from 1929 which is labeled 'Study 1929 Scale ft' per 1ft' which shows great similarity and very similar length.)
This model clearly shows one or even two sections that have been glued on to the keel, indicating that it has been altered. Note also that the plan shows faint erased outlines of a slightly longer model with less draft onto which the current penciled profile is superimposed. Another plan in the Halsey C. Herreshoff Collection at the Herreshoff Marine Museum titled 'R-Class c.b. not used. Nov. 1920' appears to show an even better match for this model, even though it shows a centerboard boat, while this model has apparently been altered from centerboard to keel. Note that the Halsey C. Herreshoff Collection at the Herreshoff Marine Museum also holds a plan dated September 9, 1920 and titled "Center-board R Class. Design for F.J. Bedford" which appears to be rather similar in profile to this model, except for the shallower underwater body and centerboard." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. December 21, 2018.)
