Footnote:
The auxiliary schooner 'Faustine' was built for George Peabody Russell, nephew of the founder of the Peabody Museum, by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company, Bristol Rhode Island in 1873. Russell kept her on the Isle of Wight at Wootton Creek and it was here that he befriended a local fisherman by the name of Hooper, who had moored alongside 'Faustine' whilst sheltering from a gale in the Solent. The friendship flourished and when in 1905 Russell died, his housekeeper gave Hooper the half model of 'Faustine'. The model, a superb example of boatbuilder's craftsmanship, was sold by Mr Hooper's son to the present vendor in the 1970's.
'Faustine' appears in Lloyds Register of Yachts, the Eastern Yacht Club Ditty Box and the official list of Herreshoff boats." Model identification:
"A half model of Faustine was offered at auction in 2006/2007. Its dimensions, interpolated from the stated backing board dimensions, were: LOA 100.24cm, LWL 88.03cm. Assuming a scale of 1/24 this would suggest a full-scale LOA of 24.06m (78ft 11in) and a LWL of 21.13m (69ft 3.8in) compared to Faustine's actual dimensions of LOA 79ft 6in and LWL 73' 8"."
