"Fred Bedford, of Greens Farms, owner of the new raceabout Rogue, which was built by Hereshoff this spring, sent the boat back to Bristol yesterday. The Rogue will be thoroughly overhauled to see if her speed can be increased. She is one of the most costly raceabouts ever built and has been a decided failure, having been defeated in every race she has sailed in. If Herreshoff is unable to improve her she will be offered for sale and a new boat built." (Source: Anon. "Over Westport Way." Norwalk Hour, July 2, 1901, p. 3.)

"[For Sale] No. 1603 --- Raceabout, 31 feet 5 inches over all, 20 feet 11 inches load water line, 7 feet 6 inches beam, 5 feet 3 inches draught. Designed and built by the Herreshoff Mnfg. Co. last season, keel boat with about 3500 lbs. of lead outside, double planked, mahogany outside skin. Two suits of Herreshoff sails, is probably as fast as any boat in the class. The boat is exactly as good as new. Is fitted with small cabin house. Owner will sell for one-half the contract price, as he has another boat in the same class. Frank Bowne Jones, Yacht Agent, 29 Broadway, New York. [Though not explicitly identified, this is quite certainly an advertisement of Rogue HMCo #549 for sale, based on the dimensions, the fact that she had been built by Herreshoff in 1901, and a comparison of her photo with her construction plan 76-28.]" (Source: Rudder, March 1902, p. 166.)

"[Rogue was again advertised for sale in the Rudder, using the same photo as in 1902.]" (Source: Rudder of March 1904, p. 174.)

Supplement

From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
  • Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.

From the 1930s L. Francis Herreshoff Index Cards at the Herreshoff Marine Museum
  • Note: The L. Francis Herreshoff index cards comprise a set of some 1200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and / or ownership information. Apparently compiled in the early 1930s, for later HMCo-built boats like the Fishers Island 23s or the Northeast Harbor 30s are not included. Added to in later decades, apparently by L. F. Herreshoff as well as his long-time secretary Muriel Vaughn and others. Also 46 cards of L. F. Herreshoff-designed vessels. The original set of index cards is held by the Herreshoff Marine Museum and permission to display is gratefully acknowledged.

Research Note(s)

"F[rederick] T[homas] Bedford was a son of E[dward] T[homas] Bedford who had made his money in Standard Oil and then created Corn Products, later CPC International. F.T. made his own fortune, partly in liquor of which his father highly disapproved (E.T. was a teetotaler)." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. March 9, 2012.)

"Note that the Construction Record states a beam of 7ft 8in and a draft of 5ft 3in while the HMCo-made vessel index card states a beam of 9ft 10in and a draft of 5ft 3.5in. Judging from other published data a beam of 7ft 8in appears to be more likely." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. March 31, 2015.)

Note: Research notes contain information about a vessel that is often random and unedited but has been deemed useful for future research.
