Supplement

From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
  • Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.

A comparison of the two transcriptions can be particularly useful in those many cases where the handwriting in the Construction Record is difficult to decipher.

Research Note(s)

"Eaglet was built from the same molds as #742s Katoura Jr., but had wide side decks, a centerboard and not a fin keel like Katoura Jr." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. December 30, 2013.)

"#818 June 26 1916. Lifting eyes 12' apart. Centerboard & lead on keel as on #766 & #767 [Centreboard 7/8 thick, oak. Lead inserted to sink. About 225 lbs lead in deadwood, with [center] at # 13 space] but rudder 2 1/2" farther forward. Air tanks at each end, after bulkhead on #21. Decked in on side 12", coaming 1 1/2" high above deck, 2 1/2" high at fwd end. Rigging & blocks as for #744 [12 1/2 footer] class. Seats & coaming mahogany. Thwart between # 17 & # 18. Tiller 2'-7" long [as per notes on drawing 76-117]." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. November 3, 2017.)

"Eaglet's owner W. K. Vanderbilt Jr. home on Long Island was named Eagle's Nest and after World War I he acquired the 150ft LOA formerly British steam yacht Adventuress which he renamed Eagle. All this suggests that Eaglet probably is this boat's original name." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. November 3, 2017.)

"Lapstrake dinghy." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. November 30, 2017."

"Contract date June 16, 1916 as per note on HMCo-made index card for #818s in Hart Nautical Collections at M.I.T.." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. November 5, 2017.)

"Eaglet was acquired from Knight Coolidge by the Herreshoff Marine Museum in September 1999." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. November 7, 2008.)
