Image Caption: "The Alden-designed yawl Evening Star in the North Construction Shop, 1937. Evening Star's raised-panel joinerwork has been installed and can be seen through the yet-to-be-planked cabintop. The splined vertical staving forming the cockpit sides is also being fitted. (Note that the edges of each piece have been sealed with varnish against moisture absorption and subsequent staining.) Since the bulwarks are not yet in place to hide them, the beautiful hook-type scarfs in the covering boards can be clearly seen. Much of the work taking place here requires the special skills of the joiners, as the finish carpenters that work on boats are called, and a ramp providing direct access to the Joiner Shop has been installed; it shows at the lefthand side of the photo. A study of construction plans produced by the Herreshoff Mfg. Co. indicates that subassembly was very much in the mind of NGH as he prepared each new design. Self-bailing cockpits, for example, were planned so they could be built in their entirety right in the Joiner Shop. But not all designers thought that way, and here, for example, Evening Star's cockpit and cabin, because of the way they were designed, had to be built in place --- obviously a slower ana more difficult process. Against the shop's far wall are the giant masts of the J-class sloops. The masts were kept there throughout the mid- and late 1930s while the boats that went with them were hauled out for storage. There are masts here of steel, aluminum (then also called 'duralumin'), and wood."

Supplement
From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
- Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.
