"The grand prize sailing regatta under the auspices of the town of Bristol, which was arranged to be held on the Fourth of July, and was thoughtfully postponed in consequence of the attempted assassination of President Garfield, was held in Bristol harbor and the bay yesterday [July 25, 1881] afternoon, and was pronounced what postponed exhibitions are rarely found to prove, the most successful event in yachting circles ever witnessed in the State. The wind blew a whole-sail breeze from the southwest the entire day, freshening perceptibly during the latter part of the afternoon, and the air was cool and delightful. At an early hour in the morning the harbor presented an animated scene, as the yachts came sailing in from all directions, and made fast to the steamboat and Rubber Works wharves. ... The Fall River steamers landed a large number of excursionists, and the wharves and most available spots for sight-seeing were promptly monopolized by the townspeople an hour before the tune of starting. ...
The fourth and fifth classes were given the signal eight minutes apart, and their course lay to and around a buoy off the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company's wharf, to and around a buoy off Popasquash point; returning to and around the Herreshoff buoy, then to and around a stake-boat off Kortright's wharf, near the head of Bristol harbor, to the judges' boat. The distance was six miles.
The official figures tell the story more concisely than any prolonged description, and are given below in the order of the classes: ...
Fifth Class. ... Open to catboats under 17 feet; first prize, silver fruit dish, #20; second, cake basket, $10; course, six miles:
Length. Start. Owner. Name. ft. in. h. m. s.
A. S. Almy, Bristol. Norah [#188001es Nora]. 15ft 11in. 2h 2m 59s. ...
... The prizes were ... awarded as follows: ... Third Class (Cat) --- First prize to Herreshoff's Alice [#405s], Bristol, 52m, 24 1/2s; ...
Fifth Class (Cat) --- First prize to Almy's Nora, Bristol, 35m 8 1/2s; ..." (Source: Anon. "The Bristol Regatta. The most successful yachting event in the Bay. "[Item Description:] Letter from E. Southsea, England, have been busy this week, educating Engineers and Stokers, one sided manoevering trial & heat for stiffness that White was to have made to bring out weak points in our boats [#74p and #75p] was vetoed by me, this brought out a little school-boy article in the [London] Times of the 11th [July 1881], our boats are handier, faster & in nearly all points superior to Whites', Fred[erick Allen] Gower was with us to-day, he had just come from Southampton in the [#187702es] GLEAM & passing close by recognized me, the GLEAM is in fine condition & beats everything under 30 or 40ft, all we now have to do here is to make the contract runs, shall probably leave on next Thursday's boat for France, [Charles L.?] Seabury & Gray have done all here that could be desired, I was glad to hear about the regatta in the paper you sent, tell Albert [S. Almy?] he is getting the [#188001es?] NORA into good habits, tell Nat [NGH] double boilers should be put in the 33ft launches [#80p and #81p] as they are such an improvement over the single coils" (Source: Herreshoff, J.B.
