"Original COLUMBIA lifeboat for 499 14' [long] scale 1/12 Nov. 1899 gig for #503 506, 507 [unreadable] (cut dinghy 520 16x14 7 1/2" frames dinghy for 624 scale 10 3.4 over 16 * 10-8 [unreadable] / 529, 532, 533, 534 16x14 add-on bow changed and shear raised remeasured Dec. 4, 1909. Model Description:
"14' lifeboat of 1899 for the cutter Columbia. Also used, with alterations to scale, mold spacing, freeboard, and with sailing rig added, for many other rowboats, sailing dinghies, and tenders. This shape became HMCo's standard for decades to follow." (Source: Bray, Maynard. 2004.)

"Rowboat 12ft long 4ft 3in wide. Made 10/12 of 14ft with Sheer raised 3 1/2". Frame spaces 6 1/4" for 12' Boat. Frame spaces 6 1/2" for 12'-6" Boat. Frame spaces 6 3/4" for 13'-0" Boat. Keel white oak. Sheer strake white oak. Stern 3/4" mahogany or 7/8" butternut. Planking 9/32" cedar, lapped in narrow strakes. Book marked #499 [Columbia] Rowboat. [Number built] 8 [Date] 12-17 [19]12. [Job] 6940. [Unreadable] [Length] 12' [as per notes on drawing 28-33].
The written entry regarding job number 6940 is almost impossible to decipher, but the job number, contract date, and number of 8 dingies built under this job number all suggest that these 12ft dinghies were built for the 8 New York 50s ordered a few weeks before (#721s Carolina would be contracted for a few weeks later). Note also that another batch of 9 10ft dinghies were built under job number 6941 for the New York 50s, meaning that apparently each New York 50 (except for #721s Carolina) was ordered with a 10ft and a 12ft dinghy. It is unclear if this 12ft dinghy had mast and centerboard or not." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. October 26, 2009.)
"This vessel's contract date was determined from notes on the original plan. Plan 28-33 from which this boat was built was drawn 1905-07. The vessel's job number 6940 was assigned ca. 1912-12-17. #712s Spartan (for which this vessel was built) was contracted for 1912-09-13.
