Model Description:
"#300 Shadow, 48'10" loa power cruiser of 1915, but with modifications from model. Also, with modifications, #301 Magistrate, 63'3" loa power tender of 1916, #375 Petunia, 58'1" loa power cruiser of 1920, #378 Helianthus III, 62'7" power cruiser of 1921." (Source: Bray, Maynard. 2004.) "Shadow's half model and offsets (both by NGH) were for a more-or-less 65-footer but when first used (for Shadow) the lengths were scaled down to 4/5ths of those shown in the book, resulting in Shadow being a bit under 50 feet in length. (Half breadths and scantlings were also scaled down, but by another factor.)" (Source: Bray, Maynard. Email to Claas van der Linde. May 5, 2021.)

Model Comment:
"Reference to Model 22 was added by CvdL, both, because she was listed in an offset booklet together with other vessels built from that model and because the index in the 2004 Guide to the Collection lists Tyara as having been built from this model." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. 2008.)

Note: Vessels that appear in the records as not built, a cancelled contract, a study model, or as a model sailboat are listed but not counted in the list of vessels built from a model.

"[Item Transcription:] [Typewritten letter on 'Eleven Thomas Street, New York' stationery:] I have Tom [Brightman]'s yesterday letter this morning and have read it to Mr. Mallory. He said that he met Loring [Swasey] at the Marine Show here some time ago and suggested some changes in arrangement that he thought would be more to his and Mr. Johnson's liking. He expected that Loring would report what he said to you. I have suggested to him that he sketch in the suggested changes on the blue print which he has and forward to you direct. He is quite confident that he has two friends that would like to build. I understand both are looking to him to work out the details and to tell them what they ought to have, based on his experience with BONNIE DUNDEE [#370p ex-TYARA],
Very truly yours," (Source: Nichols, George. Letter to N.G. Herreshoff. Halsey C. Herreshoff Collection at the Herreshoff Marine Museum Item MR_09780. Correspondence, Folder 28, formerly 147. 1922-12-20.)

"[Item Transcription:] [Signed typewritten letter on 'C. D. Mallory & Co., Inc., Steamship Agents, Managers And Operators' stationery:] I am afraid that I have offended you by the manner in which I treated the plans of the enlarged BONNIE DUNDEE [#370p ex-TYARA], and I want to apologize for same.
What happened was --- at the Marine Show I met Mr. Swaysey[sic, i.e. Swasey] and talked to him about the boat, which is of great interest to me. I told him that I would like to see the cabin arranged in a little different manner; and had written you about it. He expressed an interest in this regard and said that he would be glad to help, and also said that he would remind you of it when he got back to Bristol. As I considered Mr. Swaysey one of your organization I wrote him under date of November 10th, and was quite innocent in the matter. I believe that you will understand how this occurred and will not feel that I intentionally avoided you. On the other hand, I preferred to have your personal attention and your ideas in this matter.
Other friends of mine besides Albert Johnston have shown a decided interest in this boat, and I told George Nichols the other day that I thought orders for two, and possibly three,
could be placed.
As I wrote you under date of October 11th I think the cabin arrangement can be improved and would like to see another layout. One thing that I feel should not be overlooked is a watertight bulkhead around the engine room. In my mind this is very essential. Also, I feel that the quarters for a paid hand should be considered. I have just returned from Key West where I took the Bonnie Dundee on the deck of one of the Mallory steamers, and my Brother and I cruised for two weeks. It was our conclusion that a forecastle and galley combined with a large cabin and double stateroom (if of sufficient length) would make an ideal boat. Would you mind trying such an arrangement? It might be necessary to increase the length a foot or so.
Very truly yours, ..." (Source: Mallory, Clifford D. Letter to N.G. Herreshoff. Halsey C. Herreshoff Collection at the Herreshoff Marine Museum Item MR_09800. Correspondence, Folder 28, formerly 147. 1922-12-21.)

"[Item Transcription:] Your letter of Sept. 12th received. I am very much interested in your figures and your final estimate of the plant [HMCo].
I have felt all along the stockholders ought to get pretty close to 50 cents on the dollar, but am afraid we will not be able to get that. I sincerely hope Lippitt will raise his offer, as do not think the Directors would be justified in submitting this to stockholders unless it was at least $75,000. In the event of his not doing so, I think Charlie [Adams] and John Lawrence were right in saying we had better advertise the plant for public auction. With luck we might produce one or two other bidders, and I think Lippitt would be enough interested to bid considerably higher than his figure given us the other day. That seems to me the other only way. I think your plan to wind up and discharge everyone with the exception of Tom Brightman at once very wise. I am sorry for [Newell B] Sheldon and Mr. [Charles Wesley] Young who have been associated with the Company so long.
I will write at your suggestion, a letter to Mr. Young and get the signatures of Charlie and John Lawrence on same and forward to you. I am sending Charlie and John copies of your figures, and will request if they have any comments to make they note the same and I will forward them.
Don't forget when you have nothing better to do in the long winter afternoons, to pencil out a small cruising schooner such as I described, say 33 x 43, or 45. Make her wide enough to always sail on her bottom, and put the galley and engine aft, as in the boat [#370p TYARA] you built for Pierce; and forward of the main cabin put a what might be called a state room with berth on each side, with a door through into the four peak.
Jack Parkinson and I think that for off-shore cruising in a small boat that is the most sensible, convenient and comfortable arrangement. Water tanks on either side under the cockpit seats, with gravity feed, and overflow pipes for sink, ice box & c. above the water line. Marconi rig, with spinnaker on main. Heavy planking and iron keel if much expense can be saved. Price to be about $7,000.
Also, please send George Cormack details of RESOLUTE's [#725s] deck and sail plan, so we can have a proper full rigged model of her in the Yacht Club. You owe that to yourself, as well as to him and to the Club, as all your previous Cup Defenders are there full rigged, and I think RESOLUTE is entitled to a place." (Source: Emmons, Robert W. "[Item Transcription:] [Typewritten letter on 'Daniel Bacon. New York and Havana. 26 Beaver Street' stationery:] Dear Mr. Herreshoff:
Ever since Mrs. Bacon and myself talked with you last summer, I have been thinking over the question of building a boat, and the object of this inquiry is as to whether you would feel inclined to design one for me, and if so, if the Bristol Plant would be in position to build?
Now the type that would seem to suit our requirements best would be something along the lines of a possibly elaborated BONNIE DUNDEE [#370p ex-TYARA], of about 40 ft. water-line, but in addition to the power I would really want to have some sort of a fairly good sailing rig, because while the power is certainly very useful, we both prefer sail when it can be used to reasonable advantage. The general idea of the boat would be for summer use here, with occasional trips winter in southern waters, and for this reason, light draft would be requisite, if it could be accomplished, say not over 3ft 9in with water, stores and equipment all on board.
Will you therefore please let me know at your convenience how you feel about the matter, and if you are favorably inclined we can talk further?
Awaiting your reply, I remain, with kind
regards,
Yours very truly, ..." (Source: Bacon, Daniel. Letter to N.G. Herreshoff. Halsey C. Herreshoff Collection at the Herreshoff Marine Museum Acc. 2004.0001.0245. WRDT04, Folder 23, formerly MRDE08. 1924-06-20.)

"[Item Transcription:] [Typewritten letter on 'Daniel Bacon. New York and Havana. 26 Beaver Street' stationery:] Dear Mr. Herreshoff:
I have your letter of the 27th inst. this morning and pleased to learn that you are likely to be able to build a boat for me and at Bristol, which will be more than satisfactory to me.
About the payment, knowing how conscientiously the work will be carried out, I think the better plan would be cost plus, only in a general way I should like to have some estimate of what the work might come to at the highest before we start, to avoid any possible disappointment. I suppose there is no likelihood of your being in the city here at present and the only alternative would seem to be by correspondence, or by my coming to Bristol to talk things over with you a little if I can manage it.
Now about details, I notice you suggest that 40 ft. water-line would hardly give room enough in the accommodations wished for. In other words, a real good cabin for myself and Mrs. Bacon, and furthermore room to take two men as guests. So if 40 ft. would be too small, would ask what length you suggest? In other words, I want to have a reasonable amount of room but otherwise to keep the boat as handy as possible, both for power and sail, the idea being to keep one man steadily employed, and when, for instance, we start off on a little cruise, to have accommodations to put up the Japanese cook whom I have carried often before.
For power, I think I should need a reasonably powerful motor; that is, one that will run up fairly well to a 10 knot speed in ordinary summer weather, and as regards sail, I quite agree that the capacity of the BONNIE DUNDEE [#370p ex-TYARA] is far lighter, than I should wish to have. So should be glad of suggestions from you in the matter because I really want something that will sail reasonably well in ordinary weather when cruising, as I have no great love for motors, except for their utility. This idea, I presume, with as light a draft loaded as 3ft 9in, which I wish to have if possible, so as to also go South, would mean a center-board boat, would it not?
About commencing to build, if we can arrange the matter to our mutual satisfaction I can see no reason for not going ahead at once. But this would mean I suppose, in any case, that the boat would hardly be ready for service before late in the Fall. I note that you already have a design which you think might suit, and should you care to send it on should be very glad to look it over and report promptly.
Awaiting your further news, I remain, Yours very truly, ..." (Source: Bacon, Daniel. Letter to N.G. Herreshoff. Halsey C. Herreshoff Collection at the Herreshoff Marine Museum Acc. 2004.0001.0247. WRDT04, Folder 23, formerly MRDE08. 1924-06-30.)

"[Item Transcription:] [Typewritten letter on 'Daniel Bacon. New York and Havana. 26 Beaver Street' stationery:] Dear Mr. Herreshoff:
Over the 4th, I took home the plans and sketch you sent me to study them up a bit and while the sketch represents a boat under other conditions I should very much like to have, I came to realize that my ideas of size had become too ambitious and that I was getting well beyond my original thought of a small and handy boat. Yesterday the BONNIE DUNDEE [#370p ex-TYARA] happened into the harbor and I went on board to look the boat over carefully, and she certainly has to me many attractive features and among them the large cockpit.
Now, by Lloyds yacht register, I note this boat has a waterline length of only a short 35 feet and I have been wondering, with a limit of 40 feet, if it would not be possible to get all the room I would really need, viz., place to put one, or if needed, two paid hands - a toilet-room and stateroom forward across the boat, berthing space for two men guests, also enclosed engine space, and of course a galley and dining place. If such a scheme could be worked out, couldn't the DUNDEE's model be changed just a little and the ends lengthened for sailing under a fairly good sized rig? The DUNDEE's general lay out certainly spells efficiency and comfort including on deck, and the plain finish also would be quite satisfactory to me, for the service intended.
Sorry I don't feel that I can go ahead, as I should like to do, with a large and costly boat, but for the present I shall have to content myself with a smaller and lees desirable craft.
Yours very truly, ...
P.S. I am returning today the sketch and plans you kindly sent me. In a general way can you tell me what it might cost to duplicate the DUNDEE?" (Source: Bacon, Daniel. Letter to N.G. Herreshoff. Halsey C. Herreshoff Collection at the Herreshoff Marine Museum Acc. 2004.0001.0249. WRDT04, Folder 23, formerly MRDE08. 1924-07-07.)

"[Item Transcription:] Handwritten (in ink) letter on 'N.G. Herreshoff, Bristol, R.I.' stationery:] Dear Mr. Bacon,
I have yours of yesterdays and note that you don't feel inclined to build a boat large enough that would be comfortable for you and your wife to cruise in.
The BONNIE DUNDEE [#370p ex-TYARA], as built, was for a young feller and a friend or one paid hand, to cruise in and fish from, and it seems to me too small for what you should have. I did make some sketches for a similar boat but somewhat larger, and I am inclosing b[lue]p[rint]s of two of them. Like DUNDEE these were not intended for sailing craft and have only very light spars and small sails to be set if power gives out, and accordingly are narrow on w.l. so not to be too quick in rolling. You will notice the shorter one has a cockpit[?] and a sort of a cub[?] at forward end to make shelter [p. 2] over cabin steps, and for steering, but I don't think the cabin arrangement would suit.
The larger one is carried out much in the same plan as HELIANTHUS [#378p] and I think a most excellent layout for a boat of this character, and is about as small as can be for the accommodations you ask for.
If you really want a craft for sailing the model should be quite different but for comfortable cruising with a minimum of running expenses I am convinced this is a very attractive type of boat.
Very truly yours ..." (Source: Herreshoff, N.G. Letter to Bacon, Daniel. Halsey C. Herreshoff Collection at the Herreshoff Marine Museum Acc. 2004.0001.0250. WRDT04, Folder 23, formerly MRDE08. 1924-07-08.)

"[Item Transcription:] [Penciled draft letter:] Clifford D. Mallory, Esq.
11 Broadway, New York
Dear Mr. Mallory,
Knowing you sent BONNIE DUNDEE [#370p ex-TYARA] to Key West by one of your steamers a few years ago, I am wondering if I could have a small sailing boat [#718s ALERION III] taken there by one of your vessels that I am considering taking to Coconut Grove for use in Biscayne Bay. The boat in question is 26’ o.a., 7’6” beam, and weighs about 6,100 lbs. [and] is a sister boat to the one we built for Comm. Benedict some years ago named SADIE [#732s] and you have probably seen her about Greenwich.
If I decide to take the boat down I would also want passage for myself and wife at the same time, leaving the middle or early part of November. Will you kindly have someone give me information about this shipment and passage i.e. [sic: &c]. Has one of your ships sailing from Key West in November space on deck to carry the boat and [a] derrick boom that could lift her from afloat alongside and deliver her afloat alongside at Key West?
What would be the probable freight charge and what would be the fares for passage of self & wife? Would the boat be shipped at the owner’s or carrier’s risk?
I would furnish a cradle to set the boat in on deck. This is the same boat I had in Bermuda several years and was carried very nicely by the SS Fort Hamilton. In returning she was carried with the rig all standing and was ready to start for Bristol the moment she was put afloat in New York. I would like to have her shipped that way to Key West." Supplement

From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
  • Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.

From the 1930s L. Francis Herreshoff Index Cards at the Herreshoff Marine Museum
  • Note: The L. Francis Herreshoff index cards comprise a set of some 1200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and / or ownership information. Apparently compiled in the early 1930s, for later HMCo-built boats like the Fishers Island 23s or the Northeast Harbor 30s are not included. Added to in later decades, apparently by L. F. Herreshoff as well as his long-time secretary Muriel Vaughn and others. Also 46 cards of L. F. Herreshoff-designed vessels. The original set of index cards is held by the Herreshoff Marine Museum and permission to display is gratefully acknowledged.
