"The Herreshoff Manufacturing Co., have received orders for two small boats, one [#448s] of 16 feet, after the model of the 21-raters [#442s Houri etc.], and one steam launch [#180p] of 18 feet for yacht tending service, to be finished in two weeks. One is for Walter Langdon of Hyde Park, N. Y., and the launch for C. B. Greene, owner of steam yacht Siesta [#88p?]." (Source: Anon. "Bristol and Vicinity." Bristol Phoenix, July 21, 1894, p. 2.)

"The Herreshoff Manufacturing Company launched on Tuesday [July 31, 1894] forenoon, a small fin keel sloop of half-rate denomination, which resemble the 21 feet boats [#445s Dorothy, #442s Houri, #443s Adelaide, and #444s Vaquero I] lately built by them. Her hull is of mahogany, with seasoned oak curbings, and has a very roomy cockpit, with a patented balanced rudder of late design. She is sloop rigged with fin keel of Tobin bronze and lead bulb, and below water line has a coat of red paint. Her length over all is 22 feet, 16 feet water line, 5 feet 6 inches beam, and about 3 feet 6 inches draught. Only aboat one fortnight has been spent in her construction from the date of order, and is completely rigged and ready to proceed to her destination. She is built for Walter Langdon [sic] of Hyde Park, New York, and will leave here for Shelter Island, where he has a summer residence, whither she will be towed. ..." (Source: Anon. "Yachts and Yachting." Bristol Phoenix, August 4, 1894, p. 2.)

"PROVIDENCE, Aug. 6 [1894]. --- Work is still brisk at the Herreshoff shops. ...
The fin keel half-rater built for Walter Langdon [sic] of Hyde Park, N. Y. was launched the first of last week [July 30, 1894], and she has already had three trial spins. The first was last Tuesday [July 31, 1894], when she stood up well under a stiff southwest breeze and made rattling good time. On Wednesday [August 1, 1894] morning she beat the fast cat boat Asphodel with ease in a long run, and finished half a mile to windward. On Thursday she had another trial in the harbor, this time against a small steam launch. It was found that in running before the wind she could not quite keep up to the launch, but in running full and by she could easily distance it. She was towed to Shelter Island on Friday, and was delivered to Mr. Langdon. ..." (Source: Anon. "At The Herreshoffs' Works. Many New Boats in Hand, Some of Them Ready for Use." Supplement

From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
  • Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.

From the 1930s L. Francis Herreshoff Index Cards at the Herreshoff Marine Museum
  • Note: The L. Francis Herreshoff index cards comprise a set of some 1200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and / or ownership information. Apparently compiled in the early 1930s, for later HMCo-built boats like the Fishers Island 23s or the Northeast Harbor 30s are not included. Added to in later decades, apparently by L. F. Herreshoff as well as his long-time secretary Muriel Vaughn and others. Also 46 cards of L. F. Herreshoff-designed vessels. The original set of index cards is held by the Herreshoff Marine Museum and permission to display is gratefully acknowledged.

A comparison of the two transcriptions can be particularly useful in those many cases where the handwriting in the Construction Record is difficult to decipher.
