From the 2007 12 1/2 Registry by Steve Nagy

Hull No.: 1138
Contract Date: 1930-01-31
Org. Name: Quickstep
Org. Owner: Paul Dudley Dean
Org. Rig: J&M
Current Rig: Gaff
Mast Partner: Hinged
Home Port: Milwaukee, WI
Prior Owners: Curt Winans - 1990 - 2002 - Cape Cod - Claire
Current Name: Quickstep
Current Owner: Clint Edwards
Owner Since: 2002
Sheer-strake: Oak
Restored By: Curt Winans
Note: Owned by Clint Edwards of Glendale, WI. It has a one-piece teak seats that are probably not original, and carries a number of H-98. She sails out of McKinley Marina in Milwaukee. She was purchased by Clint in 2002. She was named Claire when Clint bought her in 2002, and he renamed her back to the original Quickstep. She was rebuilt extensively by Curt Winans, a professional boatwright who had worked for about 7 years at Ballentine's boat shop in Cataumet, MA. Curt had acquired her after she sank in Wild Harbor, MA. He restored her and sailed her for 12 years before he sold her to Clint. The teak seats and floorboards are probably not original. A sailbag stenciled "H 98 Quickstep" came with the boat when Clint purchased her, and also a spinnaker with that number.

Research Note(s)

"From the late 1920s until the close of the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company Frederick B. Barden was by far its most important customer for 12 1/2 footers. His first order came in 1926, a year before Barden's Boatyard on Sippican Harbor in the town of Marion, Mass., was officially established. From then until 1943 he would order or broker a total of more than seventy-five 12 1/2 footers (plus #1225s Crusader in 1938 and one Marlin Cruiser in 1939), usually delivering them by truck from Bristol. During the same time span the HMCo built 280 12 1/2 footers. Barden thus took up more than a quarter of the company's production of 12 1/2 footers during these years. Barden is believed to have operated a rental fleet of boats for some time, but most of the boats he ordered were for brokerage and many are believed to have been sold to members of the nearby Beverly Yacht Club and the Buzzards Yacht Club. Barden's Boat Yard was still in existence in 2015, but apparently had no information available about these early boats." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. January 10, 2015.)

"Paul Dudley Dean acquired three 12 1/2s from HMCo: #1012s (in 1926), #1097s Dreadnought (in 1928), and #1138s Quickstep (in 1930). The List of Members of the Buzzards Yacht Club as of August 18, 1930 lists Dean with only two 12 1/2s: Grand Turk and Quickstep. As per information from Steve Nagy's Herreshoff Registry Dreadnought was destroyed 'in the 1930s' but one may speculate if Quickstep had been built to replace the destroyed Dreadnought ."
