"Brenda (later Brindaban), Number 610, is a 44 1/2-footer with a small, inboard rig. Called a 'fast cruising yawl' in the Alden records, she was built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in 1935 for Charles A. Goodwin, who wanted a fast boat that was easy to handle. Her beam is just eight feet on a 30-foot waterline, and she carries 746 square feet of sail." (Source: Carrick, Robert W. and Richard Henderson, John G. Alden and His Yacht Designs, Camden, Maine, 1983, p. 391.)

Maynard Bray

"The Herreshoff Mfg. Co. held to its upside-down method of hull construction even in building the boats of other designers whose plans didn't especially lend themselves to it. There were still economies to be realized through long-established habits and convenient down-hand positions, although the structure of boats such as Brenda was more complex than what had been devised and perfected by NGH. For example, most NGH-designed boats of Brenda's size would have had a shallower-bodied hull and a steam-bent, plank-type keel timber, and there would have been a solid fairing of deadwood between it and the ballast keel. The boat's overall shape might have been similar, but NGH's structural design would have been especially tailored to the Herreshoff Mfg. Co.'s unique building method. ..." Supplement

From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
  • Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.
