"... It looks as if the death of A. J. Cassatt [who owned #603s Scud] would cause the ending of the Mount Desert Yacht Racing Association, of which he was one of the most enthusiastic members. The club consisted of a fleet of thirty-one-footers, knockabout rig, all exactly alike, for which the owners drew lots for choice, and which were as exact duplicates as the hand of the builder could make. The races were a test of pure sailing, for no professional skippers were allowed, each member sailing his own boat. The club was a flourishing one for a number of years, but last year the interest dwindled, and no races of a formal nature were held. Mr. Cassatt's yacht has been sold to Camden parties, while another, the Indian [#599s], owned by Edgar Scott of Philadelphia, another prime mover of the club, has been sold this week, also to Camden Summer residents. Mr. Scott bought the Indian from William C. Allison of Philadelphia, who was still another member of the club, but who has not been here for several seasons and didn't like her as well as his own Bat [#596s]. ..." (Source: Anon. "A three-year-old organization called Full Sea, based in Sea Cliff, Long Island, is dedicated to saving and restoring classic wooden sailboats. Headed by David Kiremidjian, a forty-four-year-old associate professor of comparative literature at Brooklyn College, the group has already acquired seventeen boats. The collection ranges from a 1880 Crosby catboat to the queen of the fleet, a 52-foot Burgess-designed and built P Class sloop named Chips.
In various stages of restoration and repair are two NY 30s, Ibis [#627s] and Phantom (ex-Minx) [#648s], a 47-foot Herreshoff Buzzards Bay 30, Arria [#566s], built in 1902, and a 50-foot Herreshoff Bar Harbor 30, Scud [#603s], built in 1903. ..." "The short creek off the Devoran river at Point and Penpol, Cornwall, England, holds little promise of greatness but this is the home of the Ocean Yacht Company, yacht restoration, building, and refit yard. In business since 1993, the yard is owned and managed by Brian Pope, a local man who grew up around boats before leaving Cornwall to work in retail management. ... Next to arrive (expected summer of 2001) will be the Herreshoff Bar Harbor 31, Scud. One of thirteen built to the one-design plans, Scud is one of only four surviving examples and ... was advertised in [WoodenBoat's] "Save a Classic". Described bv Herreshoff expert Maynard Bray as being 'in tough sliape, having been out of the water and out in the weather for many years she should [end up looking as good as she did when new].' Brian Pope is clearly excited about her arrival but has to wait for the Connecticut spring before he can start moving her: ''She's stuck in the back of a yard over there and we can't get her until their launch season gets underway in May. But by then our shed will be clearer and we'll be able to begin working on her in the autumn.' ... "After two years of research, planning and work, Scud, the Herreshoff built 1903 Bar Harbor 30 Class sloop, HMCo. #603 takes to the waters off Porto Santo Stefano Italy in late July for her first sea trials. It was an honor and a privilege to be asked to be part of this grand project. The boat was found in Belgium as a very sad derelict, having been completely stripped of her hardware and rig. She was then barged around to Italy, arriving there in early spring of 2019. During the following months, we produced nearly every single piece of bronze hardware for her, while Federico Nardi, director of Cantiere Navale dell'Argentario in Porto Santo Stefano and his crew completely rebuilt the hull and rig, and managed the project. The last of seven shipments from us arriving just as Italy was shutting down for Covid-19 in March. ..." (Source: Reineck, Jim. Supplement

From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
  • Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.

From the 1930s L. Francis Herreshoff Index Cards at the Herreshoff Marine Museum
  • Note: The L. Francis Herreshoff index cards comprise a set of some 1200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and / or ownership information. Apparently compiled in the early 1930s, for later HMCo-built boats like the Fishers Island 23s or the Northeast Harbor 30s are not included. Added to in later decades, apparently by L. F. Herreshoff as well as his long-time secretary Muriel Vaughn and others. Also 46 cards of L. F. Herreshoff-designed vessels. The original set of index cards is held by the Herreshoff Marine Museum and permission to display is gratefully acknowledged.
