Other Herreshoff Family
"... it must have been the winter of 1903 when the RELIANCE was being built [that my father N. G. Herreshoff] had us, my brother --- two of my brothers ---- and me launch a 21' overall from that model [No. 15] in our home workshop. ... [Neon was a power launch... ] ... with a one-cylinder four-cycle engine. ... She was 21', I think. ... [We built her] upside down. Father helped us and showed us how to do some things. Starting the planking he had one of the men come down from the shop to get us started and show us how to do some things. ... she was carvel." (Source: Herreshoff, A. Sidney deW. "THE RELIANCE AT BRISTOL. ... BRISTOL, R.I., May 10 [1903]. --- .... Three of Designer Herreshoff's sons, Nat, Sidney, and Griswold, are following in the footsteps of their father in the production of pleasure craft, and have a new naphtha launch [#190301p Neon] almost ready to put overboard. The launch is about 15 feet in length, and is taking shape in the boys' playhouse near their home. The work was begun on the craft last Thanksgiving Day. It will not be their first boat, for the Herreshoff boys are owners of a fleet of sailing skiffs, which for the past two seasons they have handled with efficiency in Bristol Harbor." (Source: Anon. "The Reliance At Bristol." New York Times, May 11, 1903, p. 7.)
"... Captain 'Nat' Herreshoff brought from Bristol [to the New York Yacht Club's Rendezvous in Glen Cove, Long Island] on his steam yacht [#215p] Roamer a diminutive motor boat in which he had been training his sons down on Narragansett Bay. The Neon is the craft's name and two of the Herreshoff lads handled her. She was entered against Robert Jacobs' Miss Swift, R. C. Fisher's new Aletis III, Commodore Bourne's launch Delaware and Gilbert M. Plympton's Suis Moi. The Miss Swift is fifty-eight feet long, the Suis Moi forty-eight feet, the Aletis is sixty feet or so, the Delaware about fifty feet, while the Neon is twenty-one feet. All have big engine capacity except the Herreshoff midget, and she is equipped with an engine of four and one-half horse power.
The course was triangular, eleven and three-quarters nautical miles. The Miss Swift was first home in 57m. 10s., the Delaware second, in 59m. 9s., the Aletis III in 1h. 5m. 10s., and the Neon in 1h. 33m. 27s. Not fast, hardly creditable, as power boats are said to going, but the committee, while unable to secure the measurements of the Neon, were quite sure that she was the winner of the Rendezvous Cup, set aside for this race, as her time allowance must be very large. Verily, something extraordinary is telling from that village of Bristol on Narragansett Bay, the home of the Herreshoffs, almost daily. ..." (Source: Anon. "Captain 'Nat' Herreshoff Again." August 12, 1904, p. 10.)
"Thursday, August 18 [1904] --- At Newport. While the fleet did not race on Thursday, the yachtsmen were by no means idle, as between power boat and small boat racing, rowing races for the Owl and Gamecock colors, and preparing for the Astor cup races, the members of the club put in a pretty lively twenty-four hours. ...
Among the smaller power boats which raced over an 8-knot course, the little 4 1/2 horse-power Neon [#190301ep], owned by N. G. Herreshoff, Jr., beat the Wayfarer, owned by John Hays Hammond, Jr., by 15m. 45s. on time allowance. ..." (Source: Curry, Duncan. "New York Y. C. Cruise." Forest and Stream, August 27, 1904, p. 182.)
"Narragansett Bay, R. I. --- Saturday, Sept. 10 [1904]. The fall regatta of the Bristol Y. C, held Saturday afternoon, Sept. 10, proved a failure, owing to lack of wind. ...
With the launches, Nat Herreshoff Jr.'s Neon finished more than 20m. ahead of Dr. Church's Dixie.
The summary: ...
Launches --- Start, 2:20.
Neon, N. Herreshoff, Jr 2 66 26 Finish
Dixie, Dr. H. W. Church 3 15 55 Finish
Peggy, J. B. Herreshoff, Did not finish." (Source: Young, F. H. "Bristol Y. C." Forest and Stream, September 17, 1904, p. 245.)
"The first of the series of three open regattas which was to be held by the Bristol Y.C. Saturday afternoon, June 24 [1905], was postponed to Saturday, July 1, at 1:30, owing to lack of a breeze at the time the races were scheduled to start, but it was decided to hold the power boat races as the conditions were admirable for a fair test of their speed. There were two entries each in the two classes of launches, the first for those over 21 ft. water line, and the second for boats of 21 ft. water line and under. ...
The second race was uniteresting, as but one boat finished. The summary:
First Class --- N. G. Herreshoff's 240 [#240p], 23 minutes and 11 seconds; H. L. Willoughy's Tortue, 23 minutes and 20 seconds, elapsed time.
Second Class --- Griswold Herreshoff's Neon [#190301ep], 34 minutes and 25 seconds, elapsed time; J. B. Herreshoff's Peggy did not finish. Course, 4 3/4 knots." (Source: Anon. "Bristol, R. I." Power Boat News, July 1, 1905, p. 233.)
"... A race was held at Fall River on Friday [June 24, 1905] in which some 7 launches of assorted sizes raced as one class, the winner being Sidney Herreshoff’s Neon. ..." (Source: Anon. "Newport, R. I." Power Boat News, July 29, 1905, p. 331.)
"The annual cup regatta of the Rhode Island Y. C, which was scheduled for Saturday, August 26th [1905], was simply a fizzle, for there was lack of sufficient entries to fill the several classes and the only event of the afternoon was a race between three of the 30-ft. cats.
The Herreshoff power boat 240 [#240p] came up from Bristol, and also another smaller power boat [quite certainly #190301ep Neon] owned by the Herreshoffs, but unfortunately (?) there were no entries in their classes. ..." (Source: Anon. "Pawtuxet, R. I." Power Boat News, September 2, 1905, p. 435.)
"In the annual regatta of the Fall River Yacht club Memorial Day two Bristol launches captured first prizes. In the third division W. H. Higgins in his 'Jane' [#?p] easily ran awav from a field of five others and finished over nine minutes ahead of the second boat. Nat G. Herreshoff, Jr., was equally successful in the second class, his launch the 'Neon' [#190301ep] winning a close race. Mr Higgins' launch was a boat that was discarded at the Herreshoff shops, and was repaired and made over by him until with the addition of a good motor it is now a very fast launch." (Source: Anon.
