Supplement

Research Note(s)

"Construction plan 028-003 [075-005] shows the name 'Vanitie' on the sternboard which indicates that this yawlboat (or gig as NGH called it in his diary) was built for the America's Cup defense candidate Vanitie. Vanitie had been bought in 1925 by Robert E. Tod who then ordered HMCo convert her to a schooner. Vanitie was re-launched on May 19, 1926, but in late April 1926 Tod had sold her already on to Harry Payne Whitney. Managed by Robert Emmons and helmed by Charles F. Adams Vanitie became very successful in her races against Resolute which also had been re-rigged as a schooner in 1926." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. March 22, 2021.)

"Note that, both job numbers 14138 and 14139 were for Robert E. Tod, the former being for #192503es [Yawlboat for Vanitie] and the latter being for #192501es [Sailing Cutter for Katoura II]. The two large yachts were both owned by Tod in 1925." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. March 22, 2021.)
