L. Francis Herreshoff
"While most of the yachts built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in 1902 were steam or rather small sail yachts, they did build the one-design class of Buzzards Bay thirty-footers. There were twelve of these and their dimensions were: L.O.A., forty-six feet six inches; L.W.L., thirty feet; beam, ten feet ten inches; draft, five feet four inches; weight of lead about ten thousand pounds; S.A. one thousand three hundred and twenty-five square feet. They were centerboarders for the shallow waters of Buzzards Bay, and originally set a small club topsail from their masthead which was run up a little above the peak halyards and jib stay. They may be distinguished from the Bar Harbor Thirties by this peculiarity. Some of the Buzzards Bay Thirties are still going and make good cruisers with their shallow draft if the rig has been reduced and modernized." (Source: Herreshoff, L. Francis. The Wizard of Bristol. "There is considerable bustle in constructing the new centreboard thirty-footers at the Herreshoff shops. There is no time to throw away if the fourteen boats are to be ready in time for the beginning of the yachting season. It is understood that the boats will be drawn by lot the first part of April. Two-thirds of the fleet is now completed. Eight are stored in Walker's Cove yard." (Source: Anon. "Yachts in Bristol Yards." New York Times, January 10, 1902, p. 10.)

"Boston, May 13 [1904] --- ... Down in Buzzards bay preparations are being made for the racing season by the Beverly Y. C. As the bulk of the membership of this club is composed of summer residents, however, the season does not open as early as in other sections. The 30-footers will be most prominent in the racing. Zingara, one of the 30-footers, has been sold by Mr. E. M. Farnsworth to Mr. Alexander Forbes. She will remain in the club, however, and as Mr. Forbes is one of the new members, he will probably try to make a record with her. ..." (Source: Killeen, John B. "Boston Letter." "These transfers of yachts are reported through Henry T. Gielow: ... The Buzzard's Bay 30-footer Larrikin [#571s], Robert Bacon, to E. W. MacDonald. Larrikin is going to leave for Chicago by way of the Erie Canal.

"Colonel John Jacob Astor and his fiancee, Miss Madeleine Force, stepped nearer the spotlight today when the wireless on their yacht, the Noma, told of the rescue of five men from the wrecked sloop Zingara. The Noma is now on her way to New London or Newport with the rescued men aboard. The Noma became a center of attention yesterday when Colonel Astor, with Miss Force and her father, went aboard and started up Long Island Sound for a wedding at sea. ... Colonel Astor and the Forces said that this was merely a week-end cruise undertaken primarily for the benefit of Miss Force, who has been in poor health for the past few days. ... The men rescued from the Zingara were Captain Lester Bauer, James S. Mann, Willlam Humphreys, Herbert Hendricksen and James McDonough. All of them live in New York. [Note: The New York Sun reported Bauer to have been the owner.]" (Source: Anon. "Miss Force Sees Astor In Thrilling Rescue Of Sinking Ship's Crew. "... The Zingara is owned by Frederick D. and Frank H. Newton, who are connected with a large automobile tire house. According to New York dispatches, Frederick Newton's wife and a cousin, Miss Edith Newton, were on the Zingara, but Captain Roberts of the Noma said nothing of the presence of the women in his report which was sent ashore by the Noma's wireless equipment, ..." "New York, Aug. 19 [1911]. --- The rescue of the Zingara' s crew occurred shortly before midnight twelve miles off Horton's Point. It was described in the following wireless message received by the Associated Press today from the Noma:
'Captain Richard Roberts, master of Colonel J. J. Astor's steam yacht Noma, rescued the crew of five men from the the fifty-two-foot sloop Zingara at 11:30 p. m. (Friday). Strong wind from west northwest with very rough sea. She (the Zingara) left Duck Island this morning headed toward New Haven.
Pay No Attention.
She struck heavy squall off Indian Neck this afternoon which nearly capsized her, washing binnacle and everything movable overboard. The five men worked at the pumps all the afternoon, but without avail as her seams had opened badly.
Captain of the Zingara said several vessels paid no attention to their signal for help. Rescue was made twelve miles west of Horton's Point by life boat and the use of Noma's powerful searchlight." "New Haven, Conn., Aug. 19[1911]. --- The yacht Zingara, which was abandoned off Duck Island last night, after the crew had been taken off by Colonel Astor's yacht, drifted into the East River, in Madison, during the morning. Before it drifted on the rocks. W. P. Leete, of that place put off in a launch and anchored the Zingara in a sheltered place. The sails were furled, but one of the boats had been cut free from the davits. The yacht's condition was fair." (Source: Anon. "Yacht Zingara Found.") Philadelphia Inquirer, August 20, 1911, p. 4.)
"The Zingara, Fred Newton's Buzzard Bay sloop, started on a three weeks' cruise down East. Sunday, September 13. We forgot to add that Fred and a large party were on hoard, hut take this opportunity to make the correction. Old 'Bill' Rice, said to be the oldest inhabitant of City Island, declared it was as fine a looking party 'as he ever seen.' " (Source: Anon. "Harlem Yacht Club Happenings." Yachting, October 1914, p. 202.)
"Off in a light southwest wind and a smooth sea, 13 sailboats started in the 18th annual Block Island race of the New York Athletic Club yesterday. The starting line was ... off the eastern end of Huckleberry Island. The sailing division got away at 11 a. m., Eastern standard time. Regardless of the light breeze they all made a good start with the single exception of Zingara, the property of John H. Duys Jr. The yacht had difficulty in reaching the line and got away 50 minutes after the fleet. As the breeze came it was a broad reach with booms to port for all the craft as they stood to the eastward. ...[The next year Zingara would be wrecked participating in this race.]" (Source: Anon. "Big Fleet Sails in Annual Race to Block Island." Brooklyn Daily Eagle, July 23, 1923, p. 3.)
"Yachtsmen who took part in the annual Block Island race of the New York Athletic Club returned to town today with a story that indicated that the contest was the best and the most exciting in the history of yachting in the Winged Foot organization. Not only were records smashed, but two of the sailing division ran aground, one piling up on the rocks at the entrance of West Harbor, Block Island, and is today a total loss. The other [#773s Typhoon, ex-Maisie] ran aground on a sandbar and, after being hung up for several hours, managed to get free and finally cross the finish line.
J . H. Duys jr.' s Zingara [#570s], a 46-foot sloop, was the craft that ran on the rocks and finally was smashed to pieces by the waves. The accident happened early on Sunday [July 13, 1924] morning. The racers had a light breeze when they started off Execution Rock, at the west end of the Sound, on Saturday morning. As the day advanced the wind freshened and there was a glorious racing breeze. The wind enabled the craft to foot in a splendid manner as they sped toward the eastward.
As the craft approached the entrance to West Harbor, where the finish line had been established, late Saturday night, a heavy fog, set in that made navigation exceedingly difficult. At the best, the Harbor is a difficult one to enter. Under the excitement of racing and in the heavy fog Zingara stood too close to the Bloc k Island shore, suddenly there was a crash, a ripping sound and the big sloop was piled up on the rocks in a most dangerous manner.
Lifeguards Rescue Crew.
Fortunately, lifeguards were patrolling the neighboring water. They came to the rescue of Capt. Duys and his crew. All were saved, but it was found impossible to get the yacht off the rocks. The craft was badly pounded by the waves and yesterday was found to be a complete wreck. She was not insured, although the craft probably was worth $10,000.
The other craft to get in trouble was the big racing sloop Typhoon, the property of William J . Ehrich. The yacht ran aground near the entrance of West Harbor. Fortunately the tide was rising and she finally got afloat, crossing the finish line hours after the other boats of her class. ..." (Source: De Casanova, Louis. "[Item Description:] Penciled tabulated data comparing deck length (99ft and 106ft), waterline length (65ft and 70ft 1in), Beam extreme (19ft 5in and 10ft 5in)), Draft (13ft and 14ft), displacement in cuft (2372 and 2585) and tons, Ballast in tons net, quarter plane area, rating factors, racing length (70ft and 77ft), and ratio of cube-root (displacement) / sqrt (sail area) for two vessels ('65ft' and '70ft'). Some of the table also shows rating data for #499s COLUMBIA. On verso more data beginning with 'Gaff' and ending with 'Gaff 64.94[ft]. w.l. 89.66[ft]'. [The dimensions for the 70ft 1in boat in the table appear to match those for the New York 70 class (#570s MINEOLA et al) and thus might date this to 1899/1900 or later." (Source: Herreshoff, N.G. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.

- Note: The L. Francis Herreshoff index cards comprise a set of some 1200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and / or ownership information. Apparently compiled in the early 1930s, for later HMCo-built boats like the Fishers Island 23s or the Northeast Harbor 30s are not included. Added to in later decades, apparently by L. F. Herreshoff as well as his long-time secretary Muriel Vaughn and others. Also 46 cards of L. F. Herreshoff-designed vessels. The original set of index cards is held by the Herreshoff Marine Museum and permission to display is gratefully acknowledged.
