L. Francis Herreshoff
"While most of the yachts built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in 1902 were steam or rather small sail yachts, they did build the one-design class of Buzzards Bay thirty-footers. There were twelve of these and their dimensions were: L.O.A., forty-six feet six inches; L.W.L., thirty feet; beam, ten feet ten inches; draft, five feet four inches; weight of lead about ten thousand pounds; S.A. one thousand three hundred and twenty-five square feet. They were centerboarders for the shallow waters of Buzzards Bay, and originally set a small club topsail from their masthead which was run up a little above the peak halyards and jib stay. They may be distinguished from the Bar Harbor Thirties by this peculiarity. Some of the Buzzards Bay Thirties are still going and make good cruisers with their shallow draft if the rig has been reduced and modernized." (Source: Herreshoff, L. Francis. The Wizard of Bristol. The Life and Achievements of Nathanael Greene Herreshoff, together with An Account of Some of the Yachts he Designed. New York, 1953, p. 226.)

"The work on the first [#560s Young Miss] of the thirty-foot-era of the special class of keel boats to be built at Herreshoff's is progressing very fast and the hull of the boat is about ready to be turned over. The frames for another of these boats [#561s Notos] will be set op in a few days." (Source: Anon. "Yachting." Bristol Phoenix, September 13, 1901, p. 3.)
"The first of the new class of 30-footers being constructed at Herreshoffs for racing in Buzzard's Bay and along that coast, was launched from the Herreshoffs Tuesday afternoon [November 5, 1901]. The lines of the new class resemble very much those of the Effort II [#552s] and other boats built by Herreshoff this season. The yacht has been rigged and is now ready for a trial trip. The yacht has good quarters for cruising for a boat of her size. There is to be a dozen of these yachts built, it is reported. [Note that NGH diary reported November 4, 1901 as launch date.]" (Source: Anon. "News and Notes of Local Interest." Bristol Phoenix, November 8, 1901, p. 2.)
"The first of the 30-footers of the special class now building at Herreshoffs, was given a trial trip in the harbor Saturday afternoon [November 9, 1901] and demonstrated that she will be fast in all points of sailing. Capt. Nat Herreshoff was at the tiller and three of the yachtsmen who are interested in the new class were on board and expressed themselves as much pleased with the new boat." (Source: Anon. "News and Notes of Local Interest." Bristol Phoenix, November 12, 1901, p. 2.)
"There is considerable bustle in constructing the new centreboard thirty-footers at the Herreshoff shops. There is no time to throw away if the fourteen boats are to be ready in time for the beginning of the yachting season. It is understood that the boats will be drawn by lot the first part of April. Two-thirds of the fleet is now completed. Eight are stored in Walker's Cove yard." (Source: Anon. "Yachts in Bristol Yards." New York Times, January 10, 1902, p. 10.)

"The last of the special class of 30-footers built to race in Massachusetts waters was launched from Herreshoff's yesterday. The drawing for boats in this class was made this week and the names of the yachts will be put on the sterns. The boats are named Auria [sic, i.e. #566s Arria], Anita [#576s Anita], Gamecock [#583s], Zingara [#570s], Larikin [#571s], Mashnee [#569s], Quakeress II [#565s], Pontiac [#567s], Arabian [#564s], Prazilla [sic, i.e. #563s Praxilla], Young Miss [#560s], Nolos [sic, i.e. #561s Notos] and Evelyn [#562s]." From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
- Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.

From the 1930s L. Francis Herreshoff Index Cards at the Herreshoff Marine Museum
- Note: The L. Francis Herreshoff index cards comprise a set of some 1200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and / or ownership information. Apparently compiled in the early 1930s, for later HMCo-built boats like the Fishers Island 23s or the Northeast Harbor 30s are not included. Added to in later decades, apparently by L. F. Herreshoff as well as his long-time secretary Muriel Vaughn and others. Also 46 cards of L. F. Herreshoff-designed vessels. The original set of index cards is held by the Herreshoff Marine Museum and permission to display is gratefully acknowledged.
