" 'Ventura,' was designed and built for George F. Baker, Jr., for cruising and shooting in southern and shallow waters. She was sixty feet seven inches overall, forty-five feet water line, fourteen feet beam, and four feet draft, and she is still in good condition and a remarkably comfortable cruiser with considerable speed on a reach." Dear Mr. Herreshoff
I am so pleased to hear from you that you yourself will design the boat [#867s VENTURA] I have suggested. I know it is a departure from existing types, but I believe it is a type that might become popular. Of course I shall be much guided by your judgment, so that if I have made impractical suggestions I know you will tell me. What I want is a boat with as little 'yacht' fixings as possible, a boat that can be run with two paid hands, always bearing in mind that there would be on board a cruise at least one amateur who was not afraid of work.
I trust you are well this winter, and with best wishes, believe me ..." (Source: Baker, George, F. [Letter to Nathanael G. Herreshoff.] Herreshoff Marine Museum Correspondence, Folder 56 (new). Access courtesy of Halsey C. Herreshoff. February 3, 1921.)

Dear Mr. Herreshoff:
I want to tell you how much I appreciate your coming all the way to Glen Cove in order to have a talk with me. I am very glad indeed that I had the opportunity to talk with you because, my being so far away, you will have to go along pretty well on your own judgment. However, I think we covered everything.
I want you to know that I am keen about what we have developed and believe she [Ventura] will prove in most people's minds a great success. It will always be a great pleasure to me to know that you designed her and took an interest in her.

Dear Mr. Herreshoff:
Thank you very much for your note and for the picture of 'Ventura', which I like. Matters seem to be progressing quite satisfactorily pertaining to the work in hand, men seem to be speeding up and are becoming more efficient, the Baker [Ventura] boat has not had much work done of late, in fact there is not much to do in finishing: Mr Baker wishes to have all fittings and furnishings put on board and ready for March 1st, which will be done. ...

"Dear Mr. Herreshoff: ...
I was told by my friend Bill Greenough, who was on the Ventura in Annapolis, that he saw you when you came in there this spring. I found my shortened mast and reduced rig with the gaff wonderful for the early season that I use the boat down South, when we are apt to have heavy winds, and of course in running under power up rivers and bays with the wind against me, the shortened mast was of great advantage. As soon as I came back to home waters, however, I put in the tall spar, which I think is better than anything could be for summer work. I am just as enthusiastic about the Ventura as I ever was; in fact I like her so much that if I were going to get a new boat I could not imagine how I could improve upon Ventura for size, arrangement or anything else. I am able to take my wife and three children off for a week and make them all perfectly comfortable, and when you consider that it is a sail boat with only two paid hands, one of which is the cook, I think this is quite remarkable. ..." Maynard Bray
"George F. Baker, Jr., Ventura's owner, could, and did, own about any boat that suited his fancy, including the 217-foot steam yacht Viking. His previous Herreshoff Mfg. Co.-built boats included a New York 50 sloop, also named Ventura [#711s].
The Ventura ... was the antithesis of a New York 50, made shallow and roomy --- a special-purpose boat --- to be a shooting platform and floating lodge for Baker and his guests in the shallow haunts of Southern waterfowl. ... The stem davits are beautifully tapered steel forgings, made in the Herreshoff Mfg. Co. shops, and Ventura can be fitted with a full-headroom cockpit awning of canvas.
Ventura was built to an NGH half model made for a boat named Au Revoir [#681s] nearly two decades earlier, and that same model would be used once more when Yawlcat [#1226s] was built in the middle 1930s. Each time, it was modified by a raised sheerline or scale change. With her shallow draft and a ballast ratio of only 30 percent, Ventura is far from being a racer, but her chief virtues of comfort and utility were capitalized upon some forty years after she was built when she was converted to a nice-looking, but scarcely recognizable motorsailer." "[Item Transcription:] [Typewritten letter on 'Daniel Bacon. New York and Havana. 26 Beaver Street' stationery:] Dear Mr. Herreshoff:
I was away from town yesterday and consequently only received your letter and copies of plans this morning and tonight am taking them home in order to show them to Mrs. Bacon and will write you again on Monday.
The sketch you made for me is a very interesting one, only I am afraid it is much more of a boat than I can have in mind at this time, both as regards first cost, and cost of upkeep --- the idea I had being not upward of 45 feet waterline and perhaps even a little shorter than that figure. But the only real way I believe for us to get at things properly would be for me --- as you are not likely to come this way soon to try and run on to Bristol and talk things over with you there, this being not only a more satisfactory way than writing, but also likely to save considerable time.
Meanwhile, could you give me some sort of general idea as to what cost the boat you have sketched for me might come to, ready for sea, so that I might have something to go by?
The VENTURA [#867s] Commodore Baker's boat, is more the size of boat I had in mind, except that I should prefer a ketch rig instead, if feasible. Perhaps, however, next week we can work out some more definite idea.
Yours very truly, ... [With penciled note by NGH 'Ans. July 5. $30000,-']." (Source: Bacon, Daniel. Letter to N.G. Herreshoff. Halsey C. Herreshoff Collection at the Herreshoff Marine Museum Acc. 2004.0001.0248. WRDT04, Folder 23, formerly MRDE08. 1924-07-03.)

"[Item Description:] Mr. Daniel Bacon happened to call me up the day before yesterday telling me that he was contemplating building a boat and was anxious to see #867s VENTURA, I took him out on her that afternoon, he showed me the plans which he said you had drawn up and also your letter, your letter was the first intimation to me that the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company was still building boats, I don't know why I thought otherwise, but I presume it was because there was so much talk about putting the plant up for sale, now that I understand you are still doing business, I write in a very general way to ask a question of you about a thought I have had in my mind concerning a new commuting speed boat, I think that you undoubtedly remember the LITTLE VIKING, which I still have and which is running extremely satisfactorily on her eighth summer's work, I put in new engines last summer so that the boat is as good as new, but in watching the more modern types I have become enthusiastic about an idea which nobody, as far as I can see, has hit upon and which I think would be ideal for a commuting day boat, and providing it did not cost too much I might consider selling the LITTLE VIKING and building such a boat, to give you my idea, I am enclosing a picture which very fairly represents what I have in mind, with the exception that forward of the high deck house that has the big glass windows I would want to have a big cookpit instead of having a cabin, as the picture shows, the cockpit floor and the deck house floor would both be on the same level and I believe room could be made down below, aft of the deck house, to have a toilet room and possibly a small galley or pantry, ... I should he glad to hear from you on this subject, ..., I was told by my friend Bill Greenough, who was on the VENTURA in Annapolis, that he saw you when you came in there this spring, I found my shortened mast and reduced rig with the gaff wonderful for the early season that I use the boat down South, when we are apt to have heavy winds, and of course in running under power up rivers and bays with the wind against me, the shortened mast was of great advantage, as soon as I came back to home waters, however, I put in the tall spar, which I think is better than anything could be for summer work, I am just as enthusiastic about the VENTURA as I ever was; in fact I like her so much that if I were going to get a new boat I could not imagine how I could improve upon VENTURA for size, arrangement or anything else# I am able to take my wife and three children off for a week and make them all perfectly comfortable, and when you consider that it is a sail boat with only two paid hands, one of which is the cook, I think this is quite remarkable" (Source: Baker, George F. Supplement
From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
- Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.

From the 1930s L. Francis Herreshoff Index Cards at the Herreshoff Marine Museum
- Note: The L. Francis Herreshoff index cards comprise a set of some 1200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and / or ownership information. Apparently compiled in the early 1930s, for later HMCo-built boats like the Fishers Island 23s or the Northeast Harbor 30s are not included. Added to in later decades, apparently by L. F. Herreshoff as well as his long-time secretary Muriel Vaughn and others. Also 46 cards of L. F. Herreshoff-designed vessels. The original set of index cards is held by the Herreshoff Marine Museum and permission to display is gratefully acknowledged.
