"... On the 14th inst., the TELEGRAM noted the application of a new screw propelling wheel on Mr. J. A. Bostwick's fast steam yacht the Orienta. We return to the subject to-day in sadness, but as chroniclers of the day we must inform the steam yachtsmen that this obviously stupid affair proved no good. It shook the crockery out of the racks in the pantry, breaking about half of it, in the short run from the screw dock up to Greenpoint, and it gave no speed at all --- as compared with the old wheel. 'My jaw teeth are loose yet,' said one of the sufferers from the jar. And so it was that, when up to Greenpoint, Mr. Bostwick put the yacht around to dock her again and get the thing off. Immediately after turning a little more steam was given, and away flew all three of the blades close in to the hub, and the Orienta came down the river with the tide and docked again to replace the old wheel in the short time of an hour. Mr. Bostwick knows more now about screw propeller wheels than he did a short time ago, especially the Bliven type, and since the meteor-like flight of its blades he has been looking, it is said, for some kind friend having a stout aim and a hickory club. ..." "New York. Sept. 7 [1995]. --- (Special.) --- After the [America's Cup] race the speedy little steam yacht Orienta, owned by E. R. Ladew, a leather merchant of this city and a member of the New York Yacht club, tried to pass the [excursion steam boat] City of Lowell close by on the windward side. There was a heavy swell upon which the little yacht was lifted so high its steering gear was seriously hindered. The suction made by the rapidly moving steamer still further affected the small yacht until suddenly it became unmanageable and bore down at a sharp angle for the larger boat. The man at the wheel worked hard to keep his boat off and the sound of the bells signaling the stopping of its machinery could be plainly heard on board the City of Lowell, while at the some moment it was seen a collision was inevitable.
Seated on camp chairs in the narrow and cramped space on the main deck aft, between the women's cabin and the guard rail, was a party consisting of United States Marshal John H. McCarthy and wife, Mr. and Mrs. L. Foreman Fechtman, and Mrs. Corthell, a sister of Police Justice Welde. It was not until the bowsprit of the Orienta was almost upon them they realized their great danger. Then they all dropped to the deck. The bowsprit of the yacht struck a stanchion directly in front of where they had been sitting and broke it off like a pipestem. A sliver of the splintered wood struck Mrs. McCarthy on the cheek and caused a painful wound. A still larger piece of wood struck Mr. Fechtman on the shoulder and severely bruised him.
It looked for a moment as though the bowsprit of the yacht would sweep away all the supports of the steamer's upper decks, but the spar, coming in contact with an iron post, snapped off close to the yacht's jaws and fell into the water. The Orienta then backed away, and being otherwise uninjured, proceeded towards the City." (Source: Anon. "Steam Yacht Orienta is in Danger. Runs into a Big Steamer and Narrowly Escapes Destruction." Supplement

From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
  • Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.

From the 1930s L. Francis Herreshoff Index Cards at the Herreshoff Marine Museum
  • Note: The L. Francis Herreshoff index cards comprise a set of some 1200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and / or ownership information. Apparently compiled in the early 1930s, for later HMCo-built boats like the Fishers Island 23s or the Northeast Harbor 30s are not included. Added to in later decades, apparently by L. F. Herreshoff as well as his long-time secretary Muriel Vaughn and others. Also 46 cards of L. F. Herreshoff-designed vessels. The original set of index cards is held by the Herreshoff Marine Museum and permission to display is gratefully acknowledged.

"Built in 87 days (setup to launch; equivalent to 2205 lbs displacement/day)." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. January 16, 2024.)

"In the absence of better available data displacement was estimated by using the figure for Old Measurement Tons (95.9) from the 1885 Olsen's American Yacht List (Net Register Tons were reported as 54.14 by the 1890-91 Manning's American Yacht List) and converting to lbs by dividing through 2000 (short tons). Note that this figure can only be a rough estimate because register tons as reported in Yacht Registers correlate only loosely with actual displacement figures." (Source: van der Linde, Claas.
