"BRISTOL, R I, June 21 [1913] ... The speed runabout Fad, built at Herreshoff's for F. L. Dunne of Boston and launched last Tuesday [June 17, 1913], was given speed trials in Bristol Harbor by Designer Nat Herreshoff, when the Fad showed a speed of 25 miles an hour under her 150-horse power engine. The Fad is 40 feet in length, with two cockpits, one forward and one aft of the afterhouse." (Source: Anon. "Bristol Notes." Boston Globe, June 22, 1913, p. 47.)

"The beautiful new launch for F. L. Dunne of the Boston Y. C. which has been built at Bristol, R. I., had her trial trip Wednesday [June 18, 1913] and yesterday started round the Cape for Hull, where she will be kept. The boat is practically an automobile limousine on water. Forward is the 150 horsepower Sterling engine, which is operated by the helmsman from a small cockpit forward, he being shielded by a glass wind shield similar to those used on automobiles. Aft is a finely upholstered cockpit, partially, glassed in. The boat made about 25 miles an hour under W. H. Brown of Boston, who controlled her in her trial." (Source: Anon. "Power Boat Items." Boston Globe, June 22, 1913, p. 51.)

"The new 40-foot speed day runabout owned by by F. L. Dunne of Boston was brought round from Bristol, R I, Sunday by William H Brown of Marblehead. The boat, powered with a 150-horse power Sterling engine, if capable of making 25 miles an hour. The boat behaved well in a stiff sea encountered when part way round the Cape." (Source: Anon. "Power Boat Items." Boston Globe, June 29, 1913, p. 47.)

"40-Foot x 6 ft. 10 in. Sedan Type Herreshoff Launch, particularly adapted for use as tender for one of the larger yachts, or for commuting purposes. Has Sterling Petrel engine, new latter part of 1927. Has had best of care and is in excellent condition. Speed over twenty-five miles. For further details and appointment to inspect, apply to Herreshoff Manufacturing Company, Bristol, R. I. Maynard Bray

"In Sachem, NGH's aesthetic sense can hardly be faulted, for this boat is striking in her beauty. Her sheer is set off by a varnished sheerstrake of the standard and uniquely handsome Herreshoff Mfg. Co. shape. Her low forward cabin comes to a point, which makes it both sleek to look at and easy to build. Both windshield and day-cabin roof can be removed, if desired; or, the canvas canopy can be rolled up and the windshield folded flat for real wind-in-the-face running.
Because Sachem's eight-cylinder Sterling engine makes its presence known through vibration, noise, and smell, those on board can never enjoy the peaceful travel that was common to the earlier steamers. However, the enclosed after cabin does give the owner at least some isolation. ..." (Source: Bray, Maynard and Carlton Pinheiro. Herreshoff of Bristol. Brooklin, Maine, 1989, p. 121.)

From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
  • Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.

  • Note: The L. Francis Herreshoff index cards comprise a set of some 1200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and / or ownership information. Apparently compiled in the early 1930s, for later HMCo-built boats like the Fishers Island 23s or the Northeast Harbor 30s are not included. Added to in later decades, apparently by L. F. Herreshoff as well as his long-time secretary Muriel Vaughn and others. Also 46 cards of L. F. Herreshoff-designed vessels. The original set of index cards is held by the Herreshoff Marine Museum and permission to display is gratefully acknowledged.
