"BRISTOL, R. I., April 15 [1911]. --- D. G. Whitlock's racing sloop Wink, to sail in the S-Class in New York Bay this season for the Sir Thomas Lipton thousand-dollar cup, was launched at the Herreshoff shops this afternoon, and later had a trial under sail. She was fully up to the expectations of Mr. Whitlock of New York, who was present with his family, and she was accepted at once, and is to start from here in the morning under sail for New York in charge of Mr. Whitlock's sixteen-year-old son.
Of the keel type, Wink has a knockabout rig flush deck, and is planked with mahogany. She carries 437 square feet of sail, and worked splendidly in a stiff southwester this afternoon on the wind, and was quick in stays. The craft, a new Herreshoff type, has a length over all of 32 feet 4 inches, waterline 20 feet, beam 6 feet 10 inches, and draught 4 feet, 10 inches. The Lipton Cup will be raced for the first time the coming season." (Source: Anon. "D. G. Whitlock's Sloop Wink Successfully Launched at Bristol." New York Times, April 16, 1911, p. C7.)

"BRISTOL, R I, April 15 [1911] --- A new racing sloop named Wink, built at Herreshoff's for D. G. Whittock of New York and to be enrolled in the S class of lower New York bay to race for the Sir Thomas Lipton cup, was launched this afternoon.
The boat has a big free board or flush deck of the keel type and carries 437 square feet of sail. The rig is of the knockabout variety. The craft is planked with mahogany, finished bright.
The Lipton cup, which is to be raced for the first time this season in New York bay, cost $1000.
The Wink was tried under sail this afternoon in Bristol harbor and proved speedy. She was quick in stays in a stiff southwest wind. The dimensions of the boat are as follows: Overall length, 32ft 4in; waterline, 20ft; beam, 6t 10in; draft. 4ft 10in.
The Wink sails from here tomorrow morning for New York. The owner was present at the launching and trial." (Source: Anon. "Wink Is Given A Tryout. Racer is Launched at Bristol and Proves Speedy Under Sail. To Compete for Lipton $1000 Cup." Boston Globe, April 16, 1911, p. 15.)

"Saturday [April 15, 1911] the Wink, a racing knockabout of a new type, was successfully launched and was accepted after a short try-out by her new owner, D. G. Whitlook of New York. She is 33 feet 4 inches over all, 20 feet waterline, 6 feet 10 inches beam with 4 feet 10 inch draft and is of the keel type." (Source: Anon. "Two Boats Launched." Bristol Phoenix, April 18, 1911, p. 1.)

"No. 6580 --- For Sale --- Wink; built by Herreshoff Mfg. Co, 1911, from design by N. G. Herreshoff, 34x20x4.10. Built of mahogany, finished bright all over, hollow spars. Two new suits racing sails. Won championship of Class S, Gravesend Bay, 1911. First prize Atlantic Race Week and second prize Lipton Cup Series, winning two firsts in three races. Changes made by Herreshoff this Winter make her faster than ever. My only reason for selling is that I have moved away from the water. Perfect one-man boat for day sailing. D. G. Whitlock, 1 Liberty Street, New York City." (Source: Anon. "For Sale." Rudder, March 1912, p. 182.)

"... The Marine and Field Club won the [Childs] prize this year. The organization was represented by M. & F. II, a Herreshoff boat, originally called Wink, and built for the lower bay Lipton Cup series. The present owner is J. M. Wright, a newcomer in lower bay racing. In the Childs Race, the craft was sailed by Professor George Sever, of Columbia University. M. & F. II managed to win over a 15-mile course by 2 minutes and 20 seconds, corrected time. ... The race brought to light the same question that worried the yachtsmen on Great South Bay. The majority of the craft that raced for the Childs prize have not been measured for years. Not only is this against the rules, but in the case of close finishes, it may cause considerable trouble and ill feeling. Yachts change from year to year, and in the case of all trophy races, where they are sailing on their actual ratings, they should be measured within a reasonable time before the race. It is said that M. & F. II entered on a rating certificate issued four years ago. ..." (Source: Anon. [Title?] Rudder 1916, vol. 32, [p. 451?].)

Supplement

From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
  • Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.

From the 1930s L. Francis Herreshoff Index Cards at the Herreshoff Marine Museum
  • Note: The L. Francis Herreshoff index cards comprise a set of some 1200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and / or ownership information. Apparently compiled in the early 1930s, for later HMCo-built boats like the Fishers Island 23s or the Northeast Harbor 30s are not included. Added to in later decades, apparently by L. F. Herreshoff as well as his long-time secretary Muriel Vaughn and others. Also 46 cards of L. F. Herreshoff-designed vessels. The original set of index cards is held by the Herreshoff Marine Museum and permission to display is gratefully acknowledged.
