"Fourteen Buzzards Bay Thirty Footers were built in 1902. Also [built were the] thirty-five footer AZOR for "Mac" Forbes, [the] thirty-five footer TRIVIA [TRIVIA is on exhibit at the Herreshoff Marine Museum] for Harold Vanderbilt (his second cruiser), and nearly a dozen smaller yachts." L. Francis Herreshoff

"Two other fine, wholesome sailboats of 1902 were 'Trivia,' built for Harold S. Vanderbilt (the first yachts of his that I remember having built at Bristol), and 'Azor,' built for J. M. Forbes, which made her home port Naushon Island in Buzzards Bay for several years.
Another nearly identical yacht, 'Nellie,' was built for Morton F. Plant in 1903. Their principal dimensions were L.O.A., forty-six feet; L.W.L., thirty-four feet; beam, twelve feet three inches; draft, six feet; and these three were among the nicest all-around sail boats of their size ever built. I believe one or two of them are still sailing now, nearly fifty years later, 'Nellie' afterward having the names of 'Ishkoodah' and 'Butterfly.' " (Source: Herreshoff, L. Francis. "Azor, sloop #578, of Bristol.
Built at Bristol, RI, by Herreshoff Manufacturing Co.
12.15 gross tons, 9.29 net tons; 34.8 ft. x 12.2 ft. x 5.9 ft. [Register length x breadth x depth.]
One deck, one mast, overhanging head, overhanging stern.
Surveyed and measured, June 14, 1902." (Source: U.S. Customs Department, Bristol, R.I. Custom House Record Book, 1870s to 1904 (Collection of the Herreshoff Marine Museum), s.v. Azor.)

"An able-looking cruising sloop was launched Wednesday last [June 18, 1902] at the Herreshoff shops at Bristol, and soon will have a trial spin. The name of the new craft is the Azor, and it is said to be for Col. J. Malcolm Forbes. Azor is a boat with short overhangs, beamy, and having a high freeboard. A pole mast with the last inch of it in use and the short ends in these times of extreme overhangs, makes the Azor an object of curiosity. The craft is 34 feet length on the load waterline and 40 feet over all, with a beam of good width for a boat of such length. Azor has a half keel like the Buzzard's Bay 30-footers, the centreboard housing in the keep under the cabin floor. Her big deck house, too, is not unlike the deck houses of the Beverly 30-footers, but the cockpit is wider, the coaming flaring out beyond the sides of the cabin and then turning in forward with a curve. The craft is painted white and has a moderate sized rig. ..." (Source: Anon. "Bristol Yachting Notes." New York Times, June 23, 1902, p. 6.)

"A handsome yacht named Azor, owned by J. Malcom Forbes of Boston, was launched Wednesday [June 18, 1902] morning from the Herreshoff's shops. The yacht has been rigged and is ready for her trial trip.
Azor is 34 feet long on the water line and her lines resemble very much those of the 30 footers, of the special Buzzard's Bay class." (Source: Anon. "Bristol and Vicinity." Bristol Phoenix, June 20, 1902, p. 2.)

"[Item Transcription:] My Dear Herreshoff, I have been working out in my mind since I saw you what I wanted for a first rate cruising boat [this will be #578s AZOR] that would be comfortable enough for myself to go [in] for short trips and my boys [to use] for longer cruises. As a result, I give the following description and will be glad to have any suggestions from you.
By giving [her] a longer waterline than the thirties [i.e. the Buzzards Bay 30-class sloops that were then under construction at HMCo] I hope to get an easier sea boat and more room in forward. Having a 12-foot beam, I thought, would give [more] space alongside the deep cockpit for a berth so that I could have two fore and aft as in the thirties. This boat to be built up to the standard of the new thirties and furnished as they will be. Length overall about 47 feet. L.W. L. about 33 feet. Beam about 12 feet. Draft about 5ft 6in. Trunk built like the thirties but 5 or 6 feet wide. Cockpit 7 ft long, five to six feet wide, with floor 18 inches below the level of the deck. Sail area about 1200 sq. ft.
To be furnished and ready for delivery by June 15, 1902.
The same amount of lead ballast as the thirties & centerboard the same as they have.
I have never had one of your boats and would like one, so I hope you can build such a boat as the one described for a sum that will not seem extravagant for the purpose I want for her. I was very sorry that the weather did not favor your coming to Naushon yesterday. I wanted to show your wife and yourself our woods. They’re looking beautiful now. Sincerely yours, J. Malcolm Forbes" (Source: Forbes, J. Malcolm. Letter to N.G. Herreshoff. Halsey C. Herreshoff Collection at the Herreshoff Marine Museum Item MR_20240. Correspondence, Folder 57. 1901-10-14.)

"[Item Transcription:] [Mimeographed specifications memorandum:] Memorandum of boat wanted for Mr. Russell Grinnell.
A boat [#608s RUGOSA] modelled after the 1902 Buzzards Bay 30ft Class built on a 25ft water line. To have a boat that Mr. & Mrs. Grinnell could handle alone and would want a model that would not require more than a moderate sail plan. Should prefer a single head rig. The draft should not exceed 5ft 6in and prefer 5ft, beam to be in same proportion as Buzzards Bay 30 footers. To have the same style deck house and same style cabin plan. Cockpit could be shortened to obtain this if necessary.

M. Forbes on the same model as the Plant boat [#586s NELLIE], which is 34-6' water line, 12' beam and 1400 square feet of sail, but of 6-4' draft, how about the overhang, do you believe that the Forbes boat is as fast, sea-worthy and as easy in the sea as the Plant boat?, what is Mr. Forbes willing to sell his boat for?" "[Item Description:] The other day I ran into George Granberry and he told me of your recent letter to him. This reminded me that I had been intending to write you for some time in regard to the sloop [#580s] TRIVIA. You designed and constructed her a good many years ago for William Vanderbilt. I acquired her last spring from her more recent owner, Mr. Alvord. I thought you would be interested in knowing her latest berth. She has her original rig except for the fact that I took four feet off her boom and had the mainsail re cut accordingly. I find that this brings everything almost inboard --- which makes her very much handier to reef. Also, this change gives her a perfectly balanced helm. I think she is just about the finest combination of comfort and sailing ability I have ever experienced. Apparently she is just as sound as the day she was built, and I am looking forward to a number of years to enjoy her. I am wondering if you still have her lines, and if so, would I be asking too much to have you send these to me. I have bragged so much about her that many people have asked me detailed questions in regard to her exact measurements, and I would like to have the information if this is available; incl. penciled by NGH names, building numbers, owners and dimensions of #578s AZOR, #586s NELLIE, #580s TRIVIA, #608s RUGOSA, and #616s BAMBINO" (Source: Wallace, George N. Supplement

From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
  • Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.

From the 1930s L. Francis Herreshoff Index Cards at the Herreshoff Marine Museum
  • Note: The L. Francis Herreshoff index cards comprise a set of some 1200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and / or ownership information. Apparently compiled in the early 1930s, for later HMCo-built boats like the Fishers Island 23s or the Northeast Harbor 30s are not included. Added to in later decades, apparently by L. F. Herreshoff as well as his long-time secretary Muriel Vaughn and others. Also 46 cards of L. F. Herreshoff-designed vessels. The original set of index cards is held by the Herreshoff Marine Museum and permission to display is gratefully acknowledged.
