The Water Witch, a Pierce boat, came out in '72, and the Peri, a Herreshoff cat, in '73. Long about that time it used to be close work between the Maud, Peri, Bristol and Water Witch. The Bristol was another Herreshoff boat, but she had a square stern, while the Maud and Peri had counters. ..." (Source: Anon. ("Water Line.") "City Point Yachting." "[Item Transcription:] [Handwritten (in ink) letter on verso of circular by the Dorchester Yacht Club. 1874. Fifth Regatta. Fourth Regatta for Champion Prizes. Commercial Pont, Friday, Sept. 18, at 3 o'clock. For Yachts BRISTOL [#186801es], MAUD [#187104es] and WATER WITCH, over Course No. 2.:] Dear Natty
Welcome home to the best country on the Globe.
I was in Paris last August and thought of you but had no idea you were so near (in Havre), as I afterwards learned on board the BOTHNIA coming home of a Mr Smith, who met you at Nice last Spring.
The enclosed match race is the champion of the D.Y.C. [Dorchester Yacht Club] and if you don't come and help me out I am afraid Pierce's boat the WATER WITCH will beat me as I have no one fit to handle the MAUD this summer.
I want to beat this race very much as I want to sell the MAUD and I will add one more obligation to those for which I am your debtor if you will come do come.
Remember me to Lewis & believe me your friend ..." (Source: Fuller, Charles E. Letter to N.G. Herreshoff. Halsey C. Herreshoff Collection at the Herreshoff Marine Museum Item MR_07680. Correspondence, Folder 25, formerly 212. 1874-09-14.)
