"Seafarer
YACHT TENDER BY HERRESHOFF
HULL #1-485 10' 3" x 4' 3" 1926
Charlie Sylvester built this tender and figures that, with few exceptions, all the dinghies and tenders from the Herreshoff yard between 1920 and when he left its employ in 1942 were personally built by him. Such experience, together with a keen memory for detail, made Charlie the prime information source for Barry Thomas's monograph on building a similar boat. She is a bit more burdensome than the Herreshoff Columbia lifeboat model and was developed in 1915 for the new Herreshoff 40' (waterline) one-design sloops of the New York Yacht Club. Records show that these boats were built as late as 1927, some lengthened by as much as two feet. Origin of the name Seafarer is uncertain; it was on her stern when she came to Mystic Seaport and was probably the name of the yacht she last served.
STATUS: Restored 1970, mostly original, good condition.

Research Note(s)
"While the origin of the name Seafarer for this yacht tender remains uncertain, it is interesting to note that on August 24, 1925 an S-Class with the same name was contracted for by Parker Corning. This S-boat was finished in either late 1925 or early 1926 and thus possibly could have been the reason why this yacht tender was ordered." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. September 7, 2008.)
"The dinghy at Mystic carries an oval builder's plate "Herreshoff MFG. Co. 1-485 1926 Bristol, R. I.", a photo of which appears in Thomas, Barry. Building the Herreshoff Dinghy. Mystic, Conn., frontispice." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. April 1, 2009.)
"A description accompanying a photo of this dinghy at Mystic says it was built from plan 28-46 in 1926, which would imply it might be [Dinghy for #954s Mary Rose], [Dinghy for #955s Marilee], or [Dinghy for #983s Rugosa II]." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. October 19, 2009.)
"On January 8, 1926 two Rowboat Hanging Rings (Pat. No. 01520), four Oar Lock Sockets (Pat. No. 02695), one Strap for a 2" Rowboat Hoisting Ring (Pat. No. 07009) and two 1/2" Oar Locks (Pat. No. 07309) were ordered to be cast and assigned a job no. 1-485 as to their respecive casting cards. We may assume they were for this dinghy and the date they were ordered may thus be used to approximate the contract date for this dinghy. Note that on that very same day a total of three sets of Rowboat parts were ordered to be cast as jobs 1-485, 1-486 and 1-487. This matches exactly with the three dinghies recorded to have been ordered on January 6, 1926 for #954s Mary Rose (with teak finish), for #955s Marilee (mahogany finish) and for #983s Rugosa II (mahogany finish). We may thus assume that the dinghy named Seafarer at Mystic in all likelihood was used on one of these boats, probably one of the latter two, because Seafarer appears to have mahogany finish."
