"May 10, 1922
Mr. Henry A. Benson, 97 Jefferson, Providence
Dear Sir, replying to your recent inquiry, I will sell the knockabout Kildee for $275,- cash, as she is and where she is and all gear along side, free of storage expense to date of turnover, and when ready will launch her free of expense to you.
The boat has 3300 lbs of lead on her keel, is cedar planked, white oak frame and bronze fastened, has been out two sesons and is somewhat open but should swell up all right. The rig is in fair condition except sails & running rigging are old.
Yours truly, Nathl. G. Herreshoff." (Source: Herreshoff, Nathanael G. Letter to Henry A. Benson, May 10, 1922. Herreshoff Marine Museum Collection.)

"My Own Boats. Except a few that will be mentioned as half-owner. ...
16
1895 In the fall of 1895, after the DEFENDER races. I had built for my sister-in-law, Florence DeWolf, the 18 ft. w.l. jib and main keel boat KILDEE, #460. This boat proved very fast and Miss DeWolf won many races with her. After a few years, and when Miss DeWolf tired of her, I used her a good deal and also did my sons Francis and Clarence. I finally sold her in 1927 [sic, i.e. 1922] to Arthur Benson of Providence and they still own her." (Source: Herreshoff, N. G. "My Own Boats. Except a few that Will be Mentioned as Half-Owner." Bristol, (originally compiled 1892 with additions in) 1929. In: Pinheiro, Carlton J. (ed.). Recollections and Other Writings by Nathanael G. Herreshoff. Bristol, 1998, p. 116.)

"Going back still further, mention should be made of KILDEE, a little eighteen foot waterline keel knockabout that I had built especially for my sister-in-law Florence DeWolf's use. She was built in the fall of 1895 and for the next six or eight years, Miss DeWolf sailed her in many races and often won. In later years, my son Francis [L. Francis Herreshoff] used KILDEE and won many races in her. Then I used her for my own sailing, and I finally sold her to a Providence man [H.A. Benson] and she is still kept (1934) in good condition and racing." (Source: Herreshoff, N. G. "Some of the Boats I Have Sailed In." Written 1934. In: Pinheiro, Carlton J. (ed.). "The Kildee [#460s], a 25 footer with 18 feet water line, was launched from the Herreshoff Works on Saturday [November 2, 1895]. She was built for Miss. Florence DeWolf, sister of Mrs. N.G. Herreshoff and is a pocket edition of Defender [#452s], being built on practically the same lines, even to her lead bulb. She was given a satisfactory spin on Sunday trying her speed against the Edith M. [#426s], the later being sailed by Capt. Nat Herreshoff." (Source: Anon. "Florence DeWolf's Miniature Version of Defender." Bristol Phoenix, November 8, 1895.)

"BRISTOL, R.I., Nov. 23. [1895] ... The 'Baby' Defender, which was built for Miss Flossie De Wolf, a sister of Mrs. N. G. Herreshoff, has proved a fast boat in her trial spins about the harbor. She is an exact reproduction in lines of the Defender [#452s], and is eighteen feet on the water line." (Source: Anon. "Busy Winter For Herreshoffs." New York Times, November 24, 1895, p. 15.)

"The small sloop Kildee, built late last Fall for Miss Flossie DeWolf, by the Herreshoffs, was put overboard Friday [April 24, 1896] afternoon from the boat house on the grounds of Nathaniel G. Herreshoff. The Kildee is an exact reproduction of Defender [#452s] on a smaller scale." (Source: Anon. "Bristol and Vicinity." Bristol Phoenix, April 28, 1896, p. 2.)

"The 12th annual open regatta of the Rhode Island Yacht Club was held Wednesday [August 26, 1898] off the club house at Pawtuxet and was a success in every way. Fall River and Bristol boats were well represented. In the second division, 20-foot class, sloops or cutters, the Bristol boats entered were Miss Flossie DeWolfs Kildee [#460s] and F. L. Herreshoff's Spook [#496s]. Steam yachts Eugenia [#182p] and Squib [#188p] went up from Bristol with parties on board to see Miss DeWolf and the Herreshoff boy sail their boats They were in the same class and sailed well. The Spook beat Miss DeWolf's Kildee on time allowance, although the latter crossed the line first. The distance sailed was 12 miles." (Source: Anon. "Rhode Island Yacht Club Regatta." "BRISTOL, R. I., June 26 [1909] --- ... The well-known knockabout Kildee, owned by Miss Florence G DeWolf, is being fitted out for the season in the Walkers Cove yard. She is to have new sails this season. The Kildee was built in 1895 and was a modified model of the cup-racing sloop Defender [#452s]. ..." (Source: Anon. "Bristol Notes." "... The boat stealing season opened bright and early on Narragansett Bay, as the Kildee was stolen from her mooring off the Rhode Island Yacht Club early Friday morning, May 30 [1924]. The Kildee, owned by Henry Benson, is a Herreshoff 18-footer, 25 feet overall, and she was lying at the same moorings that the yawl Swiftwind was stolen from last year. ..." (Source: Anon. "Notes From The Week's Log." Boston Globe, June 8, 1924, p. 65.)

Maynard Bray

"Although fin-keelers were still going strong in 1895, Kildee is of a different type. She carries a so-called 'bulb keel' (one that fairs into and is an integral part of the hull) and has an underwater shape much like that of Defender [#452s].
According to NGH's notes, Kildee was built in the fall of 1895 for his wife's sister, Miss Florence DeWolf, known by the family as 'Flossie,' who sailed the boat in many races over the next six or eight years, and often won; Kildee was subsequently used by NGH and his family. Kildee was fast, and according to Sidney Herreshoff, NGH sailing his sleek new sloop Delight [#679s](HMCo #679, 1908) couldn't keep up with L. Francis sailing Kildee. NGH sold Delight soon after she was built, and Kildee stayed in the family." (Source: Bray, Maynard and Carlton Pinheiro. Herreshoff of Bristol. Brooklin, Maine, 1989, p. 58.)

Supplement

From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
  • Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.

From the 1930s L. Francis Herreshoff Index Cards at the Herreshoff Marine Museum
  • Note: The L. Francis Herreshoff index cards comprise a set of some 1200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and / or ownership information. Apparently compiled in the early 1930s, for later HMCo-built boats like the Fishers Island 23s or the Northeast Harbor 30s are not included. Added to in later decades, apparently by L. F. Herreshoff as well as his long-time secretary Muriel Vaughn and others. Also 46 cards of L. F. Herreshoff-designed vessels. The original set of index cards is held by the Herreshoff Marine Museum and permission to display is gratefully acknowledged.
