"Two other fine, wholesome sailboats of 1902 were 'Trivia,' built for Harold S. Vanderbilt (the first yachts of his that I remember having built at Bristol), and 'Azor,' built for J. M. Forbes, which made her home port Naushon Island in Buzzards Bay for several years.
Another nearly identical yacht, 'Nellie,' was built for Morton F. Plant in 1903. Their principal dimensions were L.O.A., forty-six feet; L.W.L., thirty-four feet; beam, twelve feet three inches; draft, six feet; and these three were among the nicest all-around sail boats of their size ever built. I believe one or two of them are still sailing now, nearly fifty years later, 'Nellie' afterward having the names of 'Ishkoodah' and 'Butterfly.' " (Source: Herreshoff, L. Francis. The Wizard of Bristol. The Life and Achievements of Nathanael Greene Herreshoff, together with An Account of Some of the Yachts he Designed. New York, 1953, p. 227.)
"At about the turn of the century a remarkable character named Morton F. Plant became prominent in American yachting. He had made a large fortune in the management and ownership of railroads and steamship lines, and while in the prime of life decided to sell out these properties which had grown to a considerable size. It was said he received forty million dollars for his transportation facilities, and in those days, when things in general and yachts in particular, were so very much cheaper, you could do a great deal with a million dollars. Mr. Plant's particular hobby was yachting and between something like 1901 and 1911 he had a great many fine yachts built which ranged from fifteen foot open sailboats to the 647 ton steam yacht Iolanda. Mr. Plant owned yachts of almost every type including early gasoline launches and high speed steam yachts, but several of his sailing yachts were for their size the best in the world. Among these were the schooner Ingomar [#590s], sloop Nellie (afterward named Iskhoo-dah, Butterfly, Ediana, Maraquita), which has never been surpassed for a smart cruising boat; the sloop Shimna [#694s] and the schooner Elena [#706s]. He often had several of his yachts moored off his beautiful home at Eastern Point in Groton, where there were some partly sheltered anchorages inside of shoals." (Source: Herreshoff, L. Francis. An Introduction to Yachting. New York, 1963, p. 159-160.)

"Morton T. Plant of the New York Yacht Club is to have a new 34-foot cruising sloop [Nellie #586s] of the type and size of the Trivia [#580s], owned by Harold Vanderbilt. The new craft will soon be in the water, as she is two-thirds finished in the Herreshoff shop. Mr. Plant is to have a new steam yacht [Parthenia #222p] the size of the Quickstep built in the same shops, as soon as she is launched, which should be in about two weeks, a new schooner yacht [Ingomar #590s] will be set up in the place now occupied by the steamer, to be built to his order." "... Mr. Plant, who is Vice Commodore of the Larchmont Yacht Club, has had quite a number of pleasure craft constructed at the Herresboff shops in the past two years. He has now in his possession a respectable sized fleet of boats, and more are under construction. Within a year he has had built the steam yacht Parthenia [#222p], about to be placed in commission, a thirty-four-foot cruising sloop [Nellie #586s], two launches [Express #228p and ?], and a new schooner yacht, soon to be finished. The new schooner is to be named Ingomar, after a schooner yacht he owned years ago. Another of his boats which is nearly ready to be taken away is named Nellie, and resembles Harold Vanderbilt's cruiser Trivia [580s]. Capt. Holmes of the Parthenia will take Mr. Plant's steam yacht Parthenia to New London the latter part of next week, and will tow the Nellie away to that port at the same time. ..." (Source: Anon. "... John G. Alden was not successful in lifting the Brooklyn challenge cup from the Harlem Yacht Club with his Herreshoff sloop Senta [#688s] in the match sailed last week against Stuyvesant Wainwright's sloop Butterfly [#586s ex-Nellie]. The course sailed by the two yachts was 285 nautical miles. Starting from City Island, the turning mark was Vineyard Sound Light Vessel, and the way back was outside of Long Island to a finish off the Atlantic Yacht Club at Sea Gate. The Butterfly's time was 42 hours, 59 minutes and 30 seconds, that of the Senta 53 hours, 33 minutes and 6 seconds. Although beaten by elapsed time by 10 1/2 hours, the Senta was allowed by the much larger Butterfly approximately seven hours. The Butterfly, also a Herreshoff craft, is 52 feet over all and 38 feet waterline, while the Senta is only 35 feet over all and 25 feet waterline. ..." (Source: Anon. "Notes from the Week's Log." "Stuyvesant Wainwright's Butterfly again defeated Azor [#578s], property of Chas. A. Marsland of the New Rochelle Y. C, in the annual ocean race for the historic Brooklyn Y. C. Ocean Challenge Cup. The two yachts started from the Atlantic Y. C, sailed east along the Long Island coast, rounded Vineyard Sound light-vessel and returned west in Long Island Sound to the finishing line off the American Y. C. at Rye. The defender beat Azor by 46 minutes over the 280-nautical-mile course." (Source: Anon. "Butterfly Wins Again." Rudder, September 1924, p. 52.)

* Length on designed waterline - 34'6"
* Displacement - 27,700
* Beam - 12' 1"
* Draft - 7'0"
* Rig - Gaff Cutter
Two virtually identical yachts to this design were built by the Herreshoff Mfg. Co. in 1902 and 1903, the first being Trivia (HMCo #580) for Harold S. Vanderbilt (pictured on page 71 of the book Herreshoff of Bristol). The second was for Morton F. Plant, which he named Nellie (HMCo #586). Both were full-keel boats based on the keel/centerboarder Azor (HMCo #578) that had come out a few months earlier. Original price was $6,300 for Azor and Trivia and $6,400 for Nellie.
Azor, originally a Naushon Island-based boat for J. Malcolm Forbes, is no longer with us, but Trivia is in the Herreshoff Marine Museum, and Nellie is at the Hylan shop in Brooklin, ME.
In the biography of his father, L. Francis Herreshoff wrote, '... these three were among the nicest all-around sail boats of their size ever built.'
The year 1903 was a big one for Herreshoffs as well as for Nellie's owner Morton Plant. Publicity was all about the new America's Cup defender Reliance, but Plant's two other yachts got their share of attention as well --- one, the 127' steel schooner Ingomar, the other the 131' wooden-hulled steam yacht Parthenia. Nellie didn't make headlines when launched, but she had some mighty impressive stable mates!
By 1905, Plant had sold Nellie (and Parthenia as well). He was busy that year building his Italianate, four story town house-now New York City's Cartier Building, wrapped each Christmas with a gigantic red ribbon and bow, and known as the "Jewel of 5th Avenue." Awash in wealth from the sale of the railroad and shipping business his father Henry bequeathed him in 1899, Morton went on to complete Florida's Belleair Country Club, the Morton Plant Hospital in Dunedin, as well as commissioning another steel schooner, Elena, from the Herreshoffs in 1911. The University of Connecticut now occupies what used to be the Plant estate at Avery Point in Groton.
Except for a brief time in Narragansett Bay in 1906-1908, Nellie has been in western Long Island Sound waters all her life." (Source: Bray, Maynard. "Nellie. Particulars." http://www.synellie.com/particulars.html, last visit February 5, 2008.)

"[Item Description:] The other day I ran into George Granberry and he told me of your recent letter to him. This reminded me that I had been intending to write you for some time in regard to the sloop [#580s] TRIVIA. You designed and constructed her a good many years ago for William Vanderbilt. I acquired her last spring from her more recent owner, Mr. Alvord. I thought you would be interested in knowing her latest berth. She has her original rig except for the fact that I took four feet off her boom and had the mainsail re cut accordingly. I find that this brings everything almost inboard --- which makes her very much handier to reef. Also, this change gives her a perfectly balanced helm. I think she is just about the finest combination of comfort and sailing ability I have ever experienced. Apparently she is just as sound as the day she was built, and I am looking forward to a number of years to enjoy her. I am wondering if you still have her lines, and if so, would I be asking too much to have you send these to me. I have bragged so much about her that many people have asked me detailed questions in regard to her exact measurements, and I would like to have the information if this is available; incl. penciled by NGH names, building numbers, owners and dimensions of #578s AZOR, #586s NELLIE, #580s TRIVIA, #608s RUGOSA, and #616s BAMBINO" (Source: Wallace, George N. From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
- Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.

From the 1930s L. Francis Herreshoff Index Cards at the Herreshoff Marine Museum
- Note: The L. Francis Herreshoff index cards comprise a set of some 1200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and / or ownership information. Apparently compiled in the early 1930s, for later HMCo-built boats like the Fishers Island 23s or the Northeast Harbor 30s are not included. Added to in later decades, apparently by L. F. Herreshoff as well as his long-time secretary Muriel Vaughn and others. Also 46 cards of L. F. Herreshoff-designed vessels. The original set of index cards is held by the Herreshoff Marine Museum and permission to display is gratefully acknowledged.

Research Note(s)
"Relaunched in October 2009 after extensive restoration. Note, that Nellie originally had a narrower deckhouse with nine side windows (now seven) and not her current oval cockpit which was a feature that only #578s Azor had. She also has an extended mast now, possibly to enable her to carry a topsail at some time in the future." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. October 2, 2009.)
"Built in 124 days (contract to launch; equivalent to $52/day, 209 lbs displacement/day)." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. February 17, 2024.)
