"[1904-01-14] Thu 14: Very fine [with] fresh SW [breeze]. Mr. Eaton here from Boston and ordered 38' wl cruiser [Cock Robin II #617] in place of one now building (30' wl #610) [Mimosa III].

"Another interesting yacht of his design that was kept at Marblehead for some time was the 'Cock Robin II' built in 1904 for Mr. C. S. Eaton, who had had several Herreshoff sailboats built, including the twenty-one-footers 'Cock Robin' and 'Cockatoo,' and the 'Little Robin' and 'Mimosa III.' The 'Cock Robin II' was designed to be just a good sailboat and not fit any particular rule. It is a good example of a model about halfway between the Universal Rule boats, with their short quarter beam and rather large displacement, and the older types, with long lines to sail on and no pot belly. There was another yacht built on the same molds but longer --- 'Suzetta III' --- which went to Blue Hill, Maine. These two boats were somewhat under-rigged but fast sailers on a reach in strong wind." (Source: Herreshoff, L. Francis. The Wizard of Bristol. The Life and Achievements of Nathanael Greene Herreshoff, together with An Account of Some of the Yachts he Designed. New York, 1953, p. 274-275.)

"A racing sloop [#610s Mimosa III] some 30 feet in length on the waterline was built at the Herreshoff shops several months ago for C. S. Eaton. The craft was built on the molds of the Onward [#487s], owned by Designer A. S. Chesebrough until last season, when he sold the craft. The boat ordered by Mr. Eaton is 47 feet over all and 30 feet long on the waterline. The craft has been bought by T. L. Park of New York, for whom she is now being fitted out at the Herreshoff shops. Mr. Eaton, desiring a larger craft, had the Cockrobin [#617s], with a thirty-nine-foot waterline, built at the Herreshoff shops this year, the company taking the thirty-footer in trade for the Cockrobin. Mr. Park has named his thirty-footer Mimosa III. She will be in racing condition soon.
The Herreshoff shops are very quiet and will-be until the fall orders begin to come in, and as these may include one for a new cup defender, there is a bright side to present conditions for the mechanics at the boat shops. ..." Maynard Bray
"[C. S.] Eaton had owned nine Herreshoff boats, including the first Cock Robin [#461s], before ordering this, his last one. According to the designer's son L. Francis, Cock Robin II was to be just a good, wholesome boat, not influenced by any racing rule. Although by today's standards her freeboard appears low and her ends long, she is in model far less extreme than her contemporaries built to the Length-and-Sail-Area Rule. In fact, to encourage more useful sailing yachts like Cock Robin II, NGH had, around the time of her building, devised a new and improved measurement rule which was rapidly gaining acceptance (as the Universal Rule) among the influential yacht clubs --- a rule which would, in the years to follow, produce some of the most graceful sailboats ever designed. The scowlike forms of the New York 70s and Reliance would soon be things of the past.
Below deck, boats like Cock Robin II were arranged for the formal yachting customs of the Edwardian era. There was always a paid hand whose quarters were in the fo'c's'le where he had convenient access to the adjacent, rather spartan, galley. On the port side, opposite the galley, and under the forward end of the trunk cabin (for standing headroom), was the enclosed toilet room. The paid hand was generally expected to stay in his quarters or on deck when the owner and his party were aboard, except when cooking or mixing drinks or serving. In lieu of a toilet, the paid hand used a bucket. Most of the 'midship space under the trunk cabin was an open main saloon for the owner, arranged for sitting and dining by day and sleeping by night. ..." (Source: Bray, Maynard and Carlton Pinheiro. Image Caption: "As owner C. S. Eaton and photographer W. B. Jackson were based in Marblehead, to find this Jackson photo of Cock Robin II, perhaps planned for and posed, is not unexpected. It's a lovely shot of a lovely boat, with sails trimmed to perfection. ... Cock Robin II appears to have two paid hands aboard, one at the mast with an eye on the headsail trim and awaiting orders, the other poised on the afterdeck for trimming the mainsheet. Sitting in the cockpit was not for paid hands in those days. A pair of amidship davits enable Cock Robin II's tenders to be hoisted clear of the water, and beneath the boom on the far side can be seen the underbody of a 10-footer thus secured." Supplement
From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
- Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.

From the 1930s L. Francis Herreshoff Index Cards at the Herreshoff Marine Museum
- Note: The L. Francis Herreshoff index cards comprise a set of some 1200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and / or ownership information. Apparently compiled in the early 1930s, for later HMCo-built boats like the Fishers Island 23s or the Northeast Harbor 30s are not included. Added to in later decades, apparently by L. F. Herreshoff as well as his long-time secretary Muriel Vaughn and others. Also 46 cards of L. F. Herreshoff-designed vessels. The original set of index cards is held by the Herreshoff Marine Museum and permission to display is gratefully acknowledged.
