"The Reigh [sic], a sloop yacht, built at the Herreshoff Manufacturing Co. for a Maine yachtsman, was launched from the north boat shop Saturday [May 18, 1907] afternoon. The craft is 45 feet over all, with a waterline of 38 feet. [No yacht named Reigh was ever launched at HMCo. The vessel referred to can only be Neith, the only yacht with a waterline of 38 feet that was launched in 1907.]" (Source: Anon. "Bristol and Vicinity." Bristol Phoenix, May 21, 1907, p. 2.)

"Another long voyage in a small yacht has started. The Herreshoff designed and built sloop Neith, with a water-line length of 39 feet and 53 feet over all, has been purchased from Dr. E. K. Dunham and R. M. Hoe by Lieutenant Commander Sidney Houghton of the British Navy. The new owner, along with his son, a twenty-one-year-old boy; and a Bahama negro left the Seawanhaka-Corinthian Yacht Club at Oyster Bay, L. I., last Thursday [September 2, 1920], and are proceeding directly to England. Commander Houghton expects to complete the trip in less than three weeks, with any sort of favorable conditions prevailing." (Source: Anon. "Yacht Starts Long Trip. Neith Leaves Oyster Bay for Three Weeks' Voyage to England." New York Times, September 4, 1920, p. 14.)

"On Sunday evening, about 6.45, Mr. S. C. Houghton, O.B.E., Commodore of the Crouch Yacht Club, sailed into the Crouch and dropped anchor above the Crouch club, thus bringing to a safe conclusion a very brave journey. His yawl Neith left America about three weeks ago and arrived at Plymouth late last week. All the crew were fit and well when she was sighted, bunting was displayed at the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club, then the Burnham Yacht Club, and finally the Crouch Yacht Club, and soon the guns of all three clubs were booming merrily. The latter club also hoisted the signal, 'Bravo,' whilst boats on the river displayed their bunting. Later he came ashore with the crew and was heartily cheered. He will be entertained to dinner at the Crouch Club on Saturday." (Source: Anon. "Atlantic Voyage." The Yachtsman, August 13, 1921, p. 231.)

"The race for smaller cruisers between 15 to 25 tons, although it only brought three entries, was especially interesting to anyone having some little acquaintance with the competing boats. Neith, the winner, a boat of only 19 tons, belongs to the Commodore of the Crouch Yacht Club, who sailed her over from America where she was built to the designs ob Herreshoff, the designer of the recent defenders of the American Cup. She established a very successful racing record in the season of 1922 --- 8 firsts, 2 seconds and 2 thirds out of 28 starts. Kelpie, which took second place, was built over 20 years ago." (Source: Anon. "Cowes Week Begins." The Yachtsman, August 9, 1924, p. 237.)

"The Herreshoff-designed and built 21-tons cutter Neith has been sold by Mr. S. C. Houghton to a well-known East Coast yachtsman." (Source: Anon. "Brevities." The Yachtsman, November 26, 1932, p. 177.)

"Mr. A. F. Challis has purchased the 21-ton cutter Neith. In 1921, sailed by Commander Sidney C. Houghton, Neith crossed the Atlantic from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Burnham-on-Crouch." (Source: Anon. "New Owner for the Cutter Neith." The Yachtsman, January 21, 1933, p. 339.)

"In contradiction of previous rumours, Neith, 21 tons, recently purchased by Mr. A. F. Challis, late Vice-Commodore Crouch Y.C., will not be rigged as an hermaphrodite brig, but is being converted to a taffrail cutter with a new main sail made by Cranfield, of Burnham-on-Crouch. She is being fitted with a 7-9 h.p. engine, installed by Leslie and Harris, with a Brunton feathering propeller so as not to impair her sailing qualities." (Source: Anon. "Neith." The Yachtsman, March 4, 1933, p. 459.)

"... Neith is a famous vessel under a new owner, Major Henderson; she rates rather heavily, ..." (Source: Anon. "Morgan Cup Entries." The Yachtsman, July 11, 1936, p. 309.)

"... Neith ... has yet to get among the money. Her rating is fairly large for her size, but in light winds with plenty of reaching, specially as we seem to have a lot of strong-weather people about, she may come more to the fore. Anyway, it is fine to see a gaff mainsail that is a sail, and damnation to the time allowance. ..." (Source: Anon. "Large Class Chances." The Yachtsman, July 25, 1936, p. 349.)

"... Turning to the open class we have a highly interesting job before us. The list to date comprises Macnab, Latifa, Maid of Malham, Ilex, Zeearend, Ortac, Firebird, Trenchemer, Bloodhound, Aile Noire, Phyrene, Stiane, Aralus, Pam, Neith, Roland von Bremen, Hamburg, Arkton, Senta, Peter von Danzig, Elizabeth McCaw; 22 boats and four out of every five with legitimate claims to being numbered among the crack boats. ..
Neith, in spite of a reduction of canvas this year still carries a biggish area, in her gaff rig, for her 38-ft. odd water line, and together with a narrow beam this inevitably results in a fairly high rating; over 51-ft., or about the same as that of Aralus who is 10-ft. longer, and although she is a very able craft and sure to be pushed along hard by Major Henderson, she is not among the fancied. ...[Neith took 13th of 26 participants in the (10th) Fastnet Race of 1937.]" (Source: Anon. "Ocean Racing: The Fastnet, 1937." The Yachtsman, August 1937, p. 156.)

"NEITH, the 52' Herreshoff cutter built in 1907, came to the show, her meticulous restoration almost complete. Owned by Jack E. Brown of Midland, Texas, NEITH has been undergoing restoration in Stonington, Connecticut, under the direction of Jack's son, Van. The crew, consisting of Rick Waters, Ed McClave, Ben Philbrick, Paul Bates, Dan Calohan, and Bill Taylor, has done a stunning job. It was easy to see why Maynard Bray says that being bought by the Browns is one of the best things that could happen to a classic worth saving." (Source: Anon. "On The Waterfront." Supplement

From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
  • Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.

From the 1930s L. Francis Herreshoff Index Cards at the Herreshoff Marine Museum
  • Note: The L. Francis Herreshoff index cards comprise a set of some 1200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and / or ownership information. Apparently compiled in the early 1930s, for later HMCo-built boats like the Fishers Island 23s or the Northeast Harbor 30s are not included. Added to in later decades, apparently by L. F. Herreshoff as well as his long-time secretary Muriel Vaughn and others. Also 46 cards of L. F. Herreshoff-designed vessels. The original set of index cards is held by the Herreshoff Marine Museum and permission to display is gratefully acknowledged.
