"Lying at anchor in New London Harbor on Thursday last was another novelty of the famous Herreshoffs, who, not entirely content with the marvelous performance of the torpedo boat Cushing, had provided another evidence of their skill as the designers and builders of fast steaming craft. No. 163 [#163p Katrina], as she is yet known, is a stock boat just from the yard for her trial trip, a sharp, clean-lined little day launch, 73ft. over all, 9ft. 6in. beam and about 4ft. draft, intended to fill a place between the convenient but diminutive naphtha launch and the more cumbrous but comfortable cruising steam yacht. This speedy little flyer, with a crew of but three or four, is the sort of a boat to pick a man up in the city at the end of a busy day and carry him home at a rapid pace to Larchmont, Sandy Hook or up the Hudson, bringing him back next morning with no trouble from L roads, tunnels or ferries. At the same time, she is fitted for day runs and short cruises, and is a most convenient craft in every way.
The middle of the boat is given up to a Herreshoff boiler and a set of triple compound engines of high power, the framing being of the lightest, steel being used throughout. Forward of the sunken pilot bouse is the forecastle, with bunks for three men; in the pilot house a berth can be made up for the captain. Abaft the engines is a convenient cabin with two sofas which fold down, making berths at night: while under the deck, though the headroom is limited to about 4ft.; are two fixed berths and considerable stowage room. Forward of the cabin is a convenient toilet room. Of course speed is the main object, but at the same time the yacht affords all necessary accommodation for a boat of her class. The construction is excellent, a double-skin hull, with steamed oak frames, all parts being of the lightest, but well braced. The deck is of matched stuff, carefully glued together and then canvassed. The little craft tried her speed with the New York Y. C. fleet, waiting until the last steamer had started from New London and then running through the fleet until she led into Newport harbor." (Source: Anon. "Herreshoff No. 163." Forest and Stream, August 7, 1890, p. 60.)

"Port of Bristol, R. I., April 28,1891. --- APPLICATION HAVING BEEN made to the Commissioner or Navigation through this office, by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company, for change of name of the steam yacht 'No. 163' to that of 'Katrina,' under the provisions of the Act of March 2, 1881, and authority having been granted by said Commissioner under date of April 25,1891, I hereby give notice that the steam yacht heretofore sailing under the name of 'No. 163.' will now be known as the 'Katrlna' and be enrolled under that name.

"Bristol, R. I., June 13 [1893]. ... The Herreshoffs have sold the steam yacht Kaloolah [#173p], built last Winter for their own use, to Charles L. Hubbard of Norwich, Conn., for whom they built the Katrina two years ago. The latter boat now comes back to them for sale. ..." (Source: Anon. "Ready for Launching." New York Times, June 14, 1893, p. 12.)

"Bristol, R.I. June 17 [1893] --- ... Pres. John B. Herreshoff of the company, by the way, had quite an experience in getting home for the launch [of #437s Vigilant] and arrived in time at no little risk to himself. With Mrs Herreshoff he left at 7 o'clock Tuesday night on the steam yacht Kaloolah [#173p] to deliver the yacht to Mr Hubbard at New London.
The night was spent at Newport and a start made for New London at 5 o'clock Wednesday morning in a thick fog. New London was reached at 9 though, and at 11.20 Mr Herreshoff had transferred his personal belongings to the Katrina [#163p] and had started for Bristol. It was still foggy, but the Katrina was pushed right along through it and made Bristol at 3 40 in the afternoon.
The Katrina is a high-speed yacht with a record of 19.4 miles on her trial trip, and Herreshoff will use her himself for the present, but should he find a customer for her he would probably build a new one for his own use something after the style of the Kaloolah, only a bit smaller. ..." Fullwood of Bridgeport, Conn., will command her the coming season." (Source: Anon. "Yachting News." Bristol Phoenix, April 23, 1895, p. 2.)

"BRISTOL, R. I., July 20 [1902]. ... John B. Herreshoff has sold his private steam yacht Eugenia to Mr. Plant of the South, who gave the fast but small steam yacht Katrina [#163p Katrina I] in exchange in the deal." (Source: Anon. "British Yachting News." New York Times, July 21, 1902, p. 8.)

"No. 15658 --- For Sale--A very handsome Herreshoff steam launch 73 feet over all; 68 feet water line; 9 feet 6 inches beam; 3 feet 8 inches draught. This boat cannot be duplicated for less than $22,000 and she is now offered for $7,500. Her speed is 17 miles an hour. She has a good outfit of awning and stanchions, anchors, chain, cables, life buoys, buckets, tender, oars, steps, binnacle, etc., etc. She also has cushions including one that covers the whole deck aft of the cockpit; this makes a pleasant place to loaf at full length on. Her cushions together with curtains and carpets were furnished by Sloane and were new this year. She has also towels, napkins, sheets, pillows, pillow slips, table cloths, blankets, mattresses, etc., as well as a kerosene stove with oven, and knives, forks, and crockery for the crew. She had a new Herreshoff water-tube boiler installed in 1902, and is in fine condition. Apply to Hollis Burgess, Room 222. Board of Trade Building, 131 State St., Boston, Mass." [Note: Though not explicitly identified, the accompanying photo is very similar to a photo in Bray, Pinheiro: Herreshoff of Bristol, p. 28 that was made shortly before and clearly identifies Katrina. Supplement

From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
  • Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.

From the 1930s L. Francis Herreshoff Index Cards at the Herreshoff Marine Museum
  • Note: The L. Francis Herreshoff index cards comprise a set of some 1200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and / or ownership information. Apparently compiled in the early 1930s, for later HMCo-built boats like the Fishers Island 23s or the Northeast Harbor 30s are not included. Added to in later decades, apparently by L. F. Herreshoff as well as his long-time secretary Muriel Vaughn and others. Also 46 cards of L. F. Herreshoff-designed vessels. The original set of index cards is held by the Herreshoff Marine Museum and permission to display is gratefully acknowledged.

A comparison of the two transcriptions can be particularly useful in those many cases where the handwriting in the Construction Record is difficult to decipher.

"Note that Katrina's keel was laid on January 30, 1890, two months before she was recorded as having been contracted for in the Construction Record. She was built on speculation for stock of the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company, and only a year later, on April 2, 1891 sold to Charles L. Hubbard." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. November 4, 2011.)

"Built in 153 days (setup to launch; equivalent to 272 lbs displacement/day)." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. January 16, 2024.)

"In the absence of better available data displacement was estimated by using the figure for Gross Register Tons (20.79) from the 1896 Manning's American Yacht List (Net Register Tons were reported as 10.4) and converting to lbs by dividing through 2000 (short tons). Note that this figure can only be a rough estimate because register tons as reported in Yacht Registers correlate only loosely with actual displacement figures." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. March 17, 2015.)
