"The steam yacht Katrina, Henry F Noyes of New York owner, arrived here here Tuesday afternoon [June 27, 1899] to be hauled out at Herreshoff's Walker's cove marine railway for an overhauling." (Source: Anon. "News and Notes of Local Interest." Bristol Phoenix, June 30, 1899, p. 2.)

"Colonel Louis F. Heublein of this city has recently purchased the steam yacht Katrina and as soon as the yachting season opens this fine vessel will fly the private signal and the flag of the Hartford Yacht Club. Colonel Heublein's purchase adds another attractive pleasure craft to the already large fleet of the local club. The Katrina was built at the famous Herreshoff yard at Bristol, R. I., in 1897, and she fully sustains the reputation of that celebrated firm. Her principal dimensions are, 100 feet in length, 18 feet 8 inches in breadth and 5 feet in draught. Her tonnage is fifty-two and one-half tons, custom house measurement. The motive power is supplied by two triple expansion engines and a watertube boiler, engines and boiler being built by the Herreshoffs. The boiler is similar in type to those used in the torpedo boats of the United States navy.
The Katrina is of composite construction, that is, a double planking of wood on steel ribs and frames. She is flushdecked and schooner-rigged, with pole, masts and bowsprit. Her deck line is broken forward by a commodious deckhouse of mahogany and above this is the bridge, from which the yacht will be steered. The bridge will also afford an attractive place of observation in fair weather. The main deck is clear except for the deckhouse and aside from its spaciousness is rendered attractive by its fittings, the bulwarks, skylights, transom seats and companion ways being of solid mahogany. The interior of the yacht is on a scale commensurate with the exterior. Three water-tight compartments and a collision bulkhead run athwartships below the main deck, elements of safety which the most approved of modern yachts possess. The owner's quarters are forward and comprise a large stateroom with bathroom and closets annexed. Aft of the owner's stateroom are two staterooms for guests and these are handsomely fitted and furnished. In each stateroom there is hot and cold water and the yacht is lighted throughout by electricity, a dynamo and storage batteries being a part of the equipment. The batteries also supply electricity to the searchlight. Separated from the guests' staterooms by a partition is the galley from which a dumbwaiter reaches the deckhouse, which will be used as a dining hall. In the midship section of the yacht is the machinery and the boilers. In the stern are the quarters of the captain and the crew. These are large and thoroughly equipped. By the arrangement of the Katrina the best part of the vessel is reserved for the comfort and pleasure of the owner and his guests.
The crew of the yacht will consist of seven men. These will be the captain, engineer, fireman, steward, two foremast hands and a cabin boy.
The yacht carries two boats, a gig and a dinghy. Awnings of white canvas lined with water green extend from the bow aft, and in all of her appointments she is strictly modern. Her model is of the graceful pattern peculiar to the Herreshoffs. Her speed under forced draught is sixteen miles an hour and in ordinary cruising she has no difficulty in making better than fourteen miles an hour all day. Since the Katrina was launched she has been enrolled in the New York Yacht Club." (Source: Anon. "Steam Yacht Katrina. Colonel Heublein's Addition to Hartford Yacht Club Fleet." [Note: The description fits only two Herreshoff yachts contracted for in the time period of 1896-1897: Katrina and Nina. Given that a very similar photo of Katrina had also been published in a for sale advertisement by Stanley M. Seaman in 1903 it is more likely that Katrina is also being referred to in this ad. The accompanying photo also shows the faint outline of the yacht's nameboard and it appears that the number of letters might be a better match for Katrina than the shorter name Nina.]" (Source: Rudder, March 1904, p. 185.)

Supplement

From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
  • Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.

From the 1930s L. Francis Herreshoff Index Cards at the Herreshoff Marine Museum
  • Note: The L. Francis Herreshoff index cards comprise a set of some 1200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and / or ownership information. Apparently compiled in the early 1930s, for later HMCo-built boats like the Fishers Island 23s or the Northeast Harbor 30s are not included. Added to in later decades, apparently by L. F. Herreshoff as well as his long-time secretary Muriel Vaughn and others. Also 46 cards of L. F. Herreshoff-designed vessels. The original set of index cards is held by the Herreshoff Marine Museum and permission to display is gratefully acknowledged.

A comparison of the two transcriptions can be particularly useful in those many cases where the handwriting in the Construction Record is difficult to decipher.

"In the absence of better available data displacement was estimated by using the figure for Gross Register Tons (52.55) from the 1902 Manning's American Yacht List (Net Register Tons were reported as 35.74) and converting to lbs by dividing through 2000 (short tons). Note that this figure can only be a rough estimate because register tons as reported in Yacht Registers correlate only loosely with actual displacement figures." (Source: van der Linde, Claas.
