"... The Herreshoffs are putting the cabin joiner work in the 90ft. steamer [#173p Kalolah], the 30 [#430s Bonnie Doon] and 25-footer [#428s Merry Thought] are about completed, and they have lately received orders for a catboat [apparently #433s Mojave] and jib and mainsail boat [?], each 20ft. long, for New York." (Source: Anon. "New Yachts." Forest and Stream, December 22, 1892, p. 545.)
"With one large cutter [#429s Navahoe] on the stocks, another keel [#435s Colonia] ready to lay and a probable order for a third [#437s Vigilant], to say nothing of more than the usual number of small racers and steam yachts, the Herreshoff shop is a busy place just now. ...
The general work of the Herreshoffs includes several steamers, the largest [#175p Louise] for Chas. B. Hayden, of Columbus, O., is 102ft. over all, 14ft. beam, and intended for lake and inland work. ...
The next steam yacht [#173p Kalolah] will be of similar model but 92ft. over all and 76ft. l.w.l. The galley will be in the same position, but sunk partly below deck, still leaving room for a store-room below. In both of these yachts the forecastle will be aft. ..." (Source: Anon. "Building." "West[?] Steamer North Shop, No. 173, Kalolah, schooner yacht, of [blank].
Built at Bristol, RI, by Herreshoff Manufacturing Co.
21.16 tons; 80.9 ft. x 14 ft. x 10.1 ft. [Register length x breadth x depth.]
One deck, two masts, plain head, elliptic stern.
Surveyed and measured, February 25, 1893." (Source: U.S. Customs Department, Bristol, R.I. Custom House Record Book, 1870s to 1904 (Collection of the Herreshoff Marine Museum), s.v. Kalolah.)
"Here vessels have been launched from the Herreshoff's establishment this week. Monday morning [March 20, 1893] the 90-foot steam yacht Kalolah [#173p] glided down the ways from the shop into the water. She is known by her builders as No. 173. Immediately after the Kalolah was afloat the 28-foot US. government steam launch [#176p] was put into the water. This launch is to be sent to the U.S. Navy yard in Portsmouth, N.H. to be used as a tender for the ship Enterprise. Tuesday morning [March 21, 1893] the steam yacht Louise [#175p], built for C.H. Harden of Cleveland was launched. The three were all placed in the water without any accident worth mentioning." (Source: Anon. "A Busy Week." Bristol Phoenix, March 25, 1893.)
"WORK ON THE BRISTOL BOATS. MUCH PROGRESS MADE WITH THEM AT THE HERRESHOFF SHOPS. BRISTOL, R.L. March 25 [1893]. --- Work has been rushed at the Herreshoff shops for the last ten days, and the results show in the launching of boats and the laying of the keel of the Morgan-Iselin syndicate cup defender. Early in the week a couple of steamers were launched from the north shop, and are now receiving finishing touches as they lie at the north pier.
The Kalolah [#173p], the 90-footer built for the firm's use, was the first of the steamers to go over, and was followed by the Louise [#175p], the 102-footer for Charles O. Hayden. Both are very good-looking boats and a credit to the firm in design, workmanship, and appearance. ..." (Source: Anon. "Work On The Bristol Boats. "Bristol, R. I., June 13 [1893]. ... The Herreshoffs have sold the steam yacht Kaloolah, built last Winter for their own use, to Charles L. Hubbard of Norwich, Conn., for whom they built the Katrina [#163p] two years ago. The latter boat now comes back to them for sale. The Kaloolah is a twelve-mile-an-hour boat under natural draught, and is finely fitted as a cruiser, with the best of cabin accommodations. Mr. J. B. Herreshoff left late this afternoon on the Kaloolah to deliver her to Mr. Hubbard at New-London. Mrs. Herreshoff accompanied him." (Source: Anon. "Ready for Launching." New York Times, June 14, 1893, p. 12.)
"Bristol, R.I. June 17 [1893] --- ... Pres. John B. Herreshoff of the company, by the way, had quite an experience in getting home for the launch [of #437s Vigilant] and arrived in time at no little risk to himself. With Mrs Herreshoff he left at 7 o'clock Tuesday night on the steam yacht Kaloolah [#173p] to deliver the yacht to Mr Hubbard at New London.
The night was spent at Newport and a start made for New London at 5 o'clock Wednesday morning in a thick fog. New London was reached at 9 though, and at 11.20 Mr Herreshoff had transferred his personal belongings to the Katrina [#163p] and had started for Bristol. It was still foggy, but the Katrina was pushed right along through it and made Bristol at 3 40 in the afternoon.
The Katrina is a high-speed yacht with a record of 19.4 miles on her trial trip, and Herreshoff will use her himself for the present, but should he find a customer for her he would probably build a new one for his own use something after the style of the Kaloolah, ouly a bit smaller. ..." Supplement
From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
- Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.

From the 1930s L. Francis Herreshoff Index Cards at the Herreshoff Marine Museum
- Note: The L. Francis Herreshoff index cards comprise a set of some 1200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and / or ownership information. Apparently compiled in the early 1930s, for later HMCo-built boats like the Fishers Island 23s or the Northeast Harbor 30s are not included. Added to in later decades, apparently by L. F. Herreshoff as well as his long-time secretary Muriel Vaughn and others. Also 46 cards of L. F. Herreshoff-designed vessels. The original set of index cards is held by the Herreshoff Marine Museum and permission to display is gratefully acknowledged.

A comparison of the two transcriptions can be particularly useful in those many cases where the handwriting in the Construction Record is difficult to decipher.

"In the absence of better available data displacement was estimated by using the figure for Gross Register Tons (42.32) from the 1896 Manning's American Yacht List (Net Register Tons were reported as 21.16) and converting to lbs by dividing through 2000 (short tons). Note that this figure can only be a rough estimate because register tons as reported in Yacht Registers correlate only loosely with actual displacement figures." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. "Kalolah was bought from Mr. Cook in 1919 by Mr. Penick of the H. G. Hill Stores of New Orleans. She was sold about three years later and finally burned and sank in Chandeleuer Sound off the lower east Louisiana marshes." (Source: Herreshoff, L. Francis. "Kalolah."
