"With one large cutter [#429s Navahoe] on the stocks, another keel [#435s Colonia] ready to lay and a probable order for a third [#437s Vigilant], to say nothing of more than the usual number of small racers and steam yachts, the Herreshoff shop is a busy place just now. ...
The general work of the Herreshoffs includes several steamers, the largest [#175p Louise] for Chas. B. Hayden, of Columbus, O., is 102ft. over all, 14ft. beam, and intended for lake and inland work. She will have triple compound engines. On deck there will be a large saloon as dining room and main cabin, fitted with folding berths. Abaft this will be the galley, and beneath the latter, directly abaft the engine space, will be a very large storeroom for the steward's department. Abaft this are the ladies cabin, three double and one single staterooms. The yacht will be of the usual Herreshoff construction, steamed oak frames and double skin. ..." (Source: Anon. "Building." "Three vessels have been launched from the Herreshoff's establishment this week. Monday morning [March 20, 1893] the 90-foot steam yacht Kalolah [#173p] glided down the ways from the shop into the water. She is known by her builders as No. 173. Immediately after the Kalolah was afloat the 28-foot US. government steam launch [#176p] was put into the water. This launch is to be sent to the U.S. Navy yard in Portsmouth, N.H. to be used as a tender for the ship Enterprise. Tuesday morning [March 21, 1893] the steam yacht Louise [#175p], built for C.H. Harden of Cleveland was launched. The three were all placed in the water without any accident worth mentioning." (Source: Anon. "A Busy Week." Bristol Phoenix, March 25, 1893.)
"BRISTOL, R.I. March 25 [1893]. --- Work has been rushed at the Herreshoff shops for the last ten days, and the results show in the launching of boats and the laying of the keel of the Morgan-Iselin syndicate cup defender. Early in the week a couple of steamers were launched from the north shop, and are now receiving finishing touches as they lie at the north pier.
The Kalolah [#173p], the 90-footer built for the firm's use, was the first of the steamers to go over, and was followed by the Louise [#175p], the 102-footer for Charles O. Hayden. Both are very good-looking boats and a credit to the firm in design, workmanship, and appearance. ..." (Source: Anon. "Work On The Bristol Boats. "Frontenac, N.Y. August 24 [1901] --- Of the numerous steam vessels, both public and private which are daily seen plying the waters of the St. Lawrence River, the best models and the ones which elicit the most praise are the property of prominent New Yorkers summering in the Thousand Island region. ...
George Boldt's yacht the Louise [#175p] is less pretentious than many other New Yorkers' crafts, but few have cost more. The proprietor of the Waldorf-Astoria is generally conceded to have the finest summer home on the river, called 'Heart Island,' and the Louise is in keeping with his palatial residence. Mr. Boldt, however, will have another yacht here next season.
The Louise was built for Charles Haydon and was named after his daughter, Miss Louise Haydon of Columbus, O. When Mr. Boldt purchased the yacht he kept the name by which it had been known for several years.
Mr. Boldt is at present having constructed near his simmer home a yacht house which will, when completed, be the largest private boat house in this region. ... " (Source: Anon. "On October 2 [1921] the steam yacht Louise, owned by E. D. Burge of Newport, California, arrived in San Francisco thirty-four hours out of Newport on a special mission in connection with the moving picture industry of Southern California. A representative of Pacific Marine Review called on Captain William Reid, and gleaned the following particulars. The Louise is a wooden vessel, 102 feet long over-all, 84 feet long on the water line, 14 feet extreme breadth, with a molded depth of 8 feet 2 inches and a draft of 4 feet 4 inches. She was designed by N. G. Herreshoff, probably the most famous yacht designer in the world, and built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company at Bristol, Rhode Island, in 1893.
She is powered with a triple expansion steam engine 7 inches by 11 1/4 inches by 17 1/2 inches cylinder diameters and 10-inch stroke, and has one watertube boiler installed by the Seabury Company in 1910. The Louise has a net tonnage of 24 and a gross registered tonnage of 49. Her engines develop 340 horsepower, which drives the hull at a cruising speed of 12 knots. By forcing the boilers and engines she can be driven through the water for a short period at 15 knots. The fuel oil tanks have sufficient capacity for a 2000-mile steaming radius. There are accommodations for seven of the crew and ten to twelve passengers. She is equipped with wireless, with specially built lifeboats, and has considerable capacity in refrigeration equipment for taking care of perishable stores for the commissary.
Recently in a Southern California shipyard the Louise was completely overhauled, replanked and refitted. Her owner has arranged an extended itinerary for cruising in Pacific Coast waters during the next two or three years. His plans include practically the entire West Coast of the two Americas.

"Miss Dorothy Bell, who, prior to making her home in Southern California several years ago was socially prominent on the Park Slope, is the heroine of what is believed to be the first radio romance. The fact has just become known here, coincident with the announcement that she is engaged to marry Edwin D. Burge, wealthy ranch-owner and cattleman of Newport, California. Newport. California. The news of the engagement has aroused an interest second only to the circumstances leading up to it. It seems that Miss Bell, who, in addition to her other accomplishments is a talented performer on the guitar, was recently induced to broadcast several selections from Balboa, where her beach home is located. Mr. Burge, who has just returned from a Pacific cruise on one of his ocean-going yachts, the Louise, which was anchored in San Diego Bay, happened to have his super- neutrodyne set 'tuned in' at the time.
The selections captivated him and awakened a more than passing interest in the person broadcasting them. He instructed his captain to ascertain further particulars concerning "the Miss Dorothy Bell , of Balboa Bay.¨' This was done and ..." (Source: Anon. "NEWPORT BEACH, Jan. 2 [1927] --- The ... yacht Louise went ashore here this afternoon in the fog. Her 10 passengers were rescued by lifeboats. "The following pleasure craft from the mainland visited the Catalina Island Yacht Club anchorages during the past week: ... and the yacht 'Louise,' owned by E. D. From the 1920 and earlier HMCo Index Cards at the MIT Museum
- Note: The vessel index cards comprise two sets of a total of some 3200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and information regarding drawings, later or former vessel names, and owners. They were compiled from HMCo's early days until 1920 and added to in later decades, apparently by Hart Nautical curator William A. Baker and his successors. While HMCo seems to have used only one set of index cards, all sorted by name and, where no name was available, by number, later users at MIT apparently divided them into two sets of cards, one sorted by vessel name, the other by vessel number and greatly expanded the number of cards. Original HMCo cards are usually lined and almost always punched with a hole at bottom center while later cards usually have no hole, are unlined, and often carry substantially less information. All cards are held by the Francis Russell Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass.

From the 1930s L. Francis Herreshoff Index Cards at the Herreshoff Marine Museum
- Note: The L. Francis Herreshoff index cards comprise a set of some 1200 cards about vessels built by HMCo, with dimensions and / or ownership information. Apparently compiled in the early 1930s, for later HMCo-built boats like the Fishers Island 23s or the Northeast Harbor 30s are not included. Added to in later decades, apparently by L. F. Herreshoff as well as his long-time secretary Muriel Vaughn and others. Also 46 cards of L. F. Herreshoff-designed vessels. The original set of index cards is held by the Herreshoff Marine Museum and permission to display is gratefully acknowledged.

"Built in 173 days (contract to launch; equivalent to $202/day, 567 lbs displacement/day)." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. January 16, 2024.)
"In the absence of better available data displacement was estimated by using the figure for Gross Register Tons (49.08) from the 1896 Manning's American Yacht List (Net Register Tons were reported as 24.54) and converting to lbs by dividing through 2000 (short tons). Note that this figure can only be a rough estimate because register tons as reported in Yacht Registers correlate only loosely with actual displacement figures." (Source: van der Linde, Claas. March 17, 2015.)
