Document is copyrighted: Yes. Copyright holder: Hart Nautical Collections, M.I.T. Museum. Possibly the only instance of detailed written building specifications for a Herreshoff-built yacht. Something that was usually never done because it was either automatically understood or because daily supervision of a vessel's construction by its designer N. G. Herreshoff made it unneccessary. Much of this, even though it is specific to a single vessel, can be read and used in conjunction with N. G. Herreshoff's "Rules for the Construction of Wooden Boats" written for the N. Y. Y. C two years later in 1927. -

Not only a detailed description of how Columbia dinghies were built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company, but also in-depth discussion of how molds and frames were set up at HMCo, how boats were planked, and other boat building procedures typical to Herreshoff. Based on interviews with, and the written records of Charlie Sylvester, who worked at Herreshoffs from 1912 to 1940 and was reponsible for most of the dinghies built during this time. Document is copyrighted: No known copyright restrictions. Biography of N. G. Herreshoff, written in simple language and possibly addressing a youthful audience. More than other NGH biographies focused on human aspects and describing family episodes not published elsewhere. Including a wonderful error on p. 231 describing NGH's refusal to accept congratulations after the victory of Enchantress during a 1923 NYYC schooner race --- unbeknownst to the author Enchantress had not been designed by NGH and thus congratulations to NGH had been inappropriate. - Carter, Samuel III. The Boatbuilders of Bristol. New York, 1970.
Detailed biography of the Herreshoffs, containing much information not found elsewhere and gained from someone who as a young man had known NGH and when writing had close access to members of the Herreshoff family, including John Brown Herreshof's granddaughter Louise DeWolf, J. B. Francis Herreshoff's grandson Norman Herreshoff, and NGH's son A. Sidney DeW. Herreshoff. As much detail as the book contains, there are also quite a few small and some very large factual errors (such as a quadruple steam engine designed by James Herreshoff for Cushing) and some conspicuous omissions (such as the lack of discussion of the pivotal role played by Corliss for NGH's development as a steam engineer). L. Francis Herreshoff's copy of this book contained numerous annotations disagreeing with the author. It is a pity that the author decided not to cite his sources and thus, a lot of what is decribed in the book (and may sound plausible) remains unsubstantiated. - Herreshoff, A. van der Linde, Claas. [Layered Comparison of Model and Plan to Demonstrate Shortening of New York 50 by Two Feet after the model had been made.] February 25, 2022. (747 kB)
Document is copyrighted: Yes, used with permission. Copyright holder: Claas van der Linde. Clinton Crane, in his 1952 'Yachting Memories' (p. 102) wrote 'In the New York Fifties [NGH] shortened the stern to bring them inside the amount which the new owners were willing to pay, so that they were never as good looking as they might have been.' This shortening by 24 inches can be seen by overlaying the construction plan with the model which then clearly shows the model's slender stern extending beyond the boat's plan profile. At HMCo vessel profiles for a plan were usually created by simply placing the model onto the plan and then tracing a pencil around the model's outline. It appears that the extended stern on this drawing was then simply erased --- hence the spot of lighter color at the transom. This is a layered document which allows clicking on and off overlaid transparent layers to reveal different parts of the image.

With some minor errors, not all Julias were keelboats, Dexter Stone was from Philadelphia and not just a local yachtsman, Peri was not built for W. Starling Burgess, and Bluebell was built for Ed. Burgess with no proof that this was Edward Burgess.

Document is copyrighted: No known copyright restrictions. Copyright holder: DeGolyer Library, Southern Methodist University. Facscinating 21-page letter by George Converse, the government's General Inspector of the Torpedo Boat Porter, having just been built by the HMCo, to the Assistant Secretary of the Navy Theodore Roosevelt. It responds to unfair criticism about the Porter by the Navy's Bureau of Construction & Repair. The letter addresses five specific points of criticism and refutes each of them in detail. Description of NGH's comparative towing experiments and list of superior performance and performance increases by Lightning, Stiletto, Cushing, Porter, and Dupont. Defense of his policy "to take full advantage of the experience and genius of the designer [NGH], whose phenomenal success in the production of nearly 200 high speed steam vessels has attracted universal attention." The letter may go a long way in explaining why in later years N. G. Herreshoff exhibited such disgust when dealing with the U.S. Navy and its Bureau of Construction & Repair. [Note by DeGolyer Library: The recipient of this letter is the person whose title is listed on the bottom left of the final page, a common practice. Using the date on the first page of the document, it was determined Roosevelt was the Assistant Secretary of the Navy at that time. It cannot be confirmed this letter was sent.]
